AROUND seven members of staff at Edinburgh's historic Jenners store are to lose their jobs as part of restructuring by the new owner of its parent company.
Consortium the Highland Group snapped up the House of Fraser chain last year for £351 million. The restructuring, which is to bring around 180 redundancies to the group as a whole, will see a further two or three workers at Jenners sister store, House of Fraser, on Princes Street, also lose their jobs. The affected employees are believed to be behind-the-scenes sales staff.

House of Fraser, which was bought over by the Highland Group just over a year after it bought Jenners from the Douglas Miller family, said it planned to make changes to "organisational structures" across the business. The firm said it was in talks with staff whose jobs may be at risk.

John King, chief executive of House of Fraser, said: "We are changing the business to make ourselves more competitive. This will be a difficult time for some staff and we are committed to supporting staff as much as possible."

Will anyone notice? Does anyone still go there after its ruin by the House of Fraser?
One can only hope that the House of Fraser collapses ASAP and Jenners is auctioned off to someone actually capable of running it.

What used to be a great shop loved and admired by many people - locals as well as visitors - is now an embarrassment. It's gone tacky, sales assistants have the "House of Fraser cannot be bothered" attitude, standards have plummeted, and the goods that they sell is rapidly becoming junk. Please HoF - sell it off to someone who is interested in creating a shop that will be admired and loved again.

The last time I was in Jenners or 'Frenners' a member of staff actually apologised to me for the state for the shop and rubbish stock.

Come on Selfridges - dump Glasgow and come to your rightful home in the Capital! The council will give you a rates-deal similar to Harvey Nicks.

We should knock the building down and replace it with something useful.

Like a skatepark.

Or a tram station. Yeah, there's and idea - let's have a city centre tram depot. Make a feature of it, like San Fransisco

A good time to opt out for the Miller family. I would think that now it is very difficult to buy quality British merchandise with a price that is acceptable to the majority of the population. A substantial number of major retailers and manufacturers attempted to hold that to buy British was to protect the future, but for every one of them there was maybe a couple of dozen importers, with no staffing problems, union problems and not a lot of government intervention; who could select a given line and destroy a particular company just with the possession of a fax machine. You can forget about blaming the asians from Uganda, quite a lot of them attempted to start manufacturing businesses, how many left, eh? Now we have multi nationals who maybe Scots by birth but whose religion is cheap is good, but cheapest is better. Quite a bummer when you think about it.

Do you know what makes me sad you lot who choose to slate, avoid and knock Jenner’s forget one thing... that people who work there and some of them many years have to read the stuff you write. If any of you had any sense you would support Jenner’s because if you don’t more people will be out of work. The grass isn’t always greener. Support the store.

Does anyone remember M&S everyone hated it a couple of years ago now look at.
Any way the old owners sold it because its sales were in decline house of Fraser have had to deal with their mistakes.

So please wake up and smell the coffee and support the staff that are left!!!
