Hughes admits Burnley hunting Hibs star Fletcher for £3.5 million

Published Date: 29 June 2009
HIBS boss John Hughes today admitted English Premier League side Burnley are on the trail of Easter Road striker Steven Fletcher with, it is claimed, a bid worth £3.5 million.
Hughes was on holiday in Florida when Turf Moor manager Owen Coyle called him to alert him to the newly-promoted club's interest in the 22-year-old Scotland hitman.

And having returned from the States last night, Hughes will meet today with chairm
an Rod Petrie and chief executive Scott Lindsay to discuss the situation amid reports Burnley are prepared to table a bid ultimately worth £3.5m.

Hughes is already on the record as saying he wants to sit down with Fletcher to discuss his future and, although he hasn't yet had the opportunity to do so, he insisted he'd be delighted if the star reported back for pre-season training with the rest of the squad on Thursday.

He said: "Owen called to give me the heads up that there's an interest there. He asked me about Fletch and I told him he can compete, he's good in the air, quick and when he gets the ball on that left foot he always hits the target.

"Having been travelling yesterday I need to get up to date not only with what's happening regarding Fletch but a number of things so I'll be meeting the chairman and chief executive today to discuss a range of matters."

Hughes admitted he'd dearly love to see Fletcher walk through the doors of Hibs' East Mains Training Centre on Thursday morning, saying: "To see him there would give me a right good spring in my step.

"I am a great admirer of Fletch and I'd love to have the opportunity to work with him. I am a manager and a coach and I work with the players at my disposal. But I also understand football is a business and Hibs run a very good business."

With a predicted move from new Celtic boss Tony Mowbray for Fletcher having failed to materialise, Burnley are said to have stepped in with an initial offer of £2.75m plus additional payments, rising to £3.5m although, with the player under contract for another four years, Hibs would prefer to see the downpayment increased before concluding any deal.

Although Hibs fans would be disappointed to see Fletcher depart, they have been aware for some months that it would only be a matter of time before he left and the fact he'd be moving south rather than to either side of the Old Firm, unlike so many of his former team-mates would, at least, ease the pain.

But, while Fletcher's future was again the centre of intense speculation, former Falkirk midfielder Patrick Cregg was today expected to become Hughes' first signing although the Hibs boss was less forthcoming on reports linking him with moves for Bairns goalkeeper Dani Mallo and Kevin McBride.

He said: "The goalkeeping position is certainly one we are looking at and there are a number of things we are looking at although I believe we already have a good squad here and every one of them will be given their chance."

It'll be a shame to see Fletch go but in the end, if the figures being quoted are true then thats a very good price for a player whose expressed a desire to leave.

Also, he's not gonna be moving to the OF (short of any last ditch bids from Mowbray if they dont land Fortune) which can only be a plus and we've got more than adequate cover: Riordan, Benji, Nish, JJ, Byrne.

Just hope Hughes is given some of the money cause it would be nice to see a couple of experienced players brought in.

13

Neutral Observer,

Rolland applies his usual foggy economics:

1) Vlad may put a price of £4.0 million on Driver. That does not mean they will get that.

2) Hibs put a price of £5.0 million on Fletcher. This is only the first bid. If Rangers paid £4.0 million to Burnley for a dummy like Lafferty then Burnley will pay at least that for Fletcher.

3) This 'leak' by Hughes of the Burnley bid is Hibs way of putting the story out to interested clubs that they should get a move on if they are really interested.

Driver will not fetch £4.0 million.

Rolland, on the gas and air again aye??!! plum!

Fletch is a decent player....no more. With his inability to kick the ball with his right foot I fear he may struggle in the Premiership but who cares...get the cash.

Agree,

I don't think there is that much to choose between Fletcher and Driver, both good prospects but neither of them has yet shown real consistancy or that wee bit extra that is needed, like Scott Brown or a Craig Gordon did.

£3.5 would do nicely for Fletcher and I'm sure if that was the offer for Driver it would be seen by any sensible fan as a good bit of business.
Not that you will find many of them on here these days.

It would not reduce the debt at all, it would only mean the losses for the year wouldn't be as bad.

As to the story, does it not strike anyone as strange that Coyle would phone Hughes for his opinion on a player AFTER saying there's interest? You'd think they would maybe know about him already if they were prepared to bid.

Also, surely any contracted player is obliged to turn up at training if this is what is expected of them?

£100,000 for the jessie jones, and around 2 million i would guess for Fletch with additional add ons makes for bleak reading for the hobos. Great for the hobo board members though! The last of the family silver being flogged and left with.......Yogi and the tash happy days. Sure a freedom of contract player who likes YTS wages will be signed at fester road soon though.

31 Agreed, you can feel the biterness from the hobos, must be tough having to support a club with as much ambition as Cowdenbeath and hobo supporters continue with the heads in sand policy! Another player to be sold for decent money and how much of it will they see, not a penny. But a youngster who is paid next to nothing will replace him in a struggling side with the fans on the new managers back after a few months, can see it already.
If it makes them feel better by thinking Hearts won't last long in Europe you have to sympathise slightly with them, it's all they have after all. Roll on the European nights at Tynecastle park, can't beat it!!

I find it quite amusing to read Hearts fans coming on a story about Hibs getting interest in Steven Fletcher from a Premiership side that are probably willing to pay £3.5m plus for the lad.

Fletcher is a decent forward who has scored over 50 goals in the SPL, played regularly for Hibs and scored for Scotland also.

Then I think to Hearts and their deadly forwards like Nade and Elliot. If on average they score 2 or 3 goals a season its going to take them many years to score as many as Fletcher. Crikey even Nish who really is a bit of a diddy scored more than both of them last season.

There's talk of Hibs getting Stokes and/or Gow to replace Fletcher up front and we already have Riordan, Nish, JJ and possibly Benji. All proven goalscorers at this level and that is without some good youngsters about to break through.

When are Hearts going to sign a decent striker??
39

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

29/06/2009 13:45:52
Driver will hopefuly be staying where he is, unlike Fletcher he isn't desperate to leave and it would take a huge bid to land him, especialy after his exposure in the under 21 tournament. I seem to recall the hobo evaluation of Gordon was about 2-3 million. Hearts will always be more appealing than the hibs,

Eh?

Riordan: One of the most gifted forwards in the SPL (much more natural ability than Fletcher), would walk into any side outwith the OF and has proven SPL goalscoring record.
Benji: Does have issues with work rate and attitude but has huge amount of talent and potential which he has proven at ER, just needs a decent manager to get the best out of him.
Nish: Not brilliant but proven SPL player who adds a phyisical presence upfront and will hold the ball up and get a few goals if called upon.
JJ: A bit over the hill but good sub with loads of experience, will do a decent job if necessary.
Byrne: Time will tell but very promising young player, looking forward to seeing what he can do next year.

All in all, we can easily cope with the loss of Fletch, especially if Yogi is given some cash to bring in another forward but would have no worries about not adding to those players, much more concerned about Goalkeeper and Midfielder where we need some more quality over quantity.

It would be good to see him in the EPL and I really hope he does well and gets a regular place in the Scotland team.

#43 Didn't take long to write Fletcher off. I seem to remember much the same was said about Thomson, Whittaker, Caldwell, Killen, O'Connor, Murray and Rearend. Only difference is that Rearend and Murray couldn't cut it elsewhere, they are now welcomed back as stars.
For the record, Fletcher is by far the best player currently at ER.
44

Dood,

29/06/2009 14:19:01
Excellent.

The story concerns a rising Scottish forward, still a wee bit away from being the finished article, but once a good coach teaches him that he actually has a right foot as well, he could go onto very big things.

Despite this, the more demented followers of the 'big team' attempt to belittle any interest in such a player.

I'd suggest that it's a foregone conclusion that Fletch will be offski this summer and he'll leave with the best wishes of the Hibs support. If he were staying, Yogi would have kept quiet. Instead he's putting the issue into the spotlight, hopefully with a view to starting a bidding war which will increase the fee accrued by Hibs. Pretty good business sense really - what's the point in holding a player who wants to move and earn money beyond our means?

With regards to £4m for Driver - good luck if you can get it. I'd suggest however that if Coventry baulked in january at the reported £2m then they'll not come back with more. And if you reckon that he's consistent enough for the Premiership then (apologies Abe for stealing your line but),

NURSE!!!

The biggest difference being that the £3-£4m for Fletch will be pumped into the club in some shape or form. A New stand must get under way in the new year and this would be the money that cements the project.

Alternatively you could delude yourself that Rod and Tom are pocketing cash and diddling the club. If so, have a wee read at the opaque, legible and straightforward set of accounts then challenge that.

Not writing him off, he's a very good player and if he stays at ER for another year or so I'll be delighted. All im suggesting is that if theres one area of the pitch we can afford to lose a player its upfront.

I personally think Riordan is the most talented player at ER but issues with his attitude and workrate have caused him problems. If you compare their goals to game ratio Riordan is by far the best forward.

Players leaving is part of the game for any club, Man U will live without Ronaldo, Hearts will cope with the loss of Driver when he eventually leaves as they did with Gordon, Hartley, Skacel etc.

Hibs will do the same and in this situation if the figues being mentioned are accurate, you cant really blame him or the club for his departure.

I dont really get what the point of your post was, Hearts fans were saying exactly the same thing when Aguiar left by writing him off (not worth the money, no loyalty to the club so good ridance, only played well for one season etc) but IMO he was one of the most talented player at Tynecastle and apart from saving on his wages, the club didnt even get any money out of his departure.

Maroon baboon wearing a mask,

29/06/2009 17:04:56
Eufa have called into Tynecastle today, they are investigating the rumour that many Hearts fans will not be adorned with a mask for their brief, and fruitless European adventure.

The Eufa spokesman has advised "Mask wearing for the Hearts fans is a pre-requisite, there will be no tolerance of this law being ignored. We will come down heavily on any fan who refuses to wear their mask."
He stipulated, "It is a matter of Public Safety, the sanitariums will fill up in no-time and the general public should not have to face the bill"

A Hearts spokesman has confirmed that all season ticket holders have had a letter hand delivered by a mask wearing postman advising of this law, included in the letter is a cardboard emergency mask which can be placed over the face in case of emergency.

Lex Gold of the SPL has praised EUFA for their part in insuring that the wearing of masks for Hearts fans is compulsory, he said "Ever since Stevie Fulton adorned the maroon of Heart of Midlothian - there has been fear and trepidation amongst both the visiting fans to Tyncastle and when Hearts play away from home, the shear shock of the unmasked Fulton still lives with many a non Hearts fan today."

Stevie Fulton was unavailable for comment today as no TV,Radio or blind Reporter would go anywhere near him due to his refusal to wear a mask.

Fletcher is a good player but sadly one footed. If he can sort that out he may well become a great player.

If the Hibs can get 3.5 Mil for him take it and be glad he is not off along the M8.

If Vlad does not want to sell Driver(and I don't think he does) you had better believe the 4Mil price tag cause he won't go for a penny less.

MON THE JT'S

the suit must stay.

#81 The thing about Driver is that he is something of a luxury player.

I think he's a very good player but, away from the hype, he is really inconsistent and not a good crosser of the ball.

He is not EP standard yet and the Championship, being a very hard league, only have a couple of teams in it who would play with a winger like Driver.

Incidently, whenever he comes up against the much maligned David Van Zanten, he doesn't get a kick of the ball.

I think, probably, the best thing Driver could do is stay at Hearts for another couple of seasons and try to realise his potential with a regular place in the team.

#83 Glad you admit to being a Hearts supporter. There never was a less convincing Hibby. And yet it's not difficult. So how stupid are you?

Typical response from one of the lower orders. Ignore the content and get your less than intelligent point across.

I said that Driver was a very good player but you had to ignore that didn't you?
