Hughes hunts next Hibs star as Fletcher ships out

Published Date: 01 July 2009
HIBS boss John Hughes today watched Steven Fletcher head for Burnley in a £3million move and immediately declared: "It's up to me to find the next one."
While admitting he was disappointed to lose the 22-year-old Scotland striker, Hughes insisted the deal was "a good bit of business," particularly at a time when SPL clubs are having to contend with the collapse of television firm Setanta and the fina
ncial implications involved.

Hughes had been hoping to speak to Fletcher, whose Easter Road contract ran until 2013, amid renewed speculation regarding his future with the hope of persuading him to remain in Edinburgh for at least another season.

But, while he never got that opportunity, Hughes insisted he'd been kept fully abreast of developments with Burnley manager Owen Coyle, a firm personal friend, having initially informed him of the Clarets' interest.

Pointing out that, although Fletcher's departure will be painful for the fans, Hibs aren't exactly impoverished in terms of a strikeforce, Hughes also called on youngsters Kurtis Byrne and Patrick Dean, newly promoted from the club's highly successful Under-19 side, to see his exit as an opportunity for themselves.

He said: "I feel it was a good bit of business but, on the other hand, we will miss him. He's a quality player but I also understand the business side of the game."

Hughes knows full well that, following the sales of players such as Garry O'Connor, Kevin Thomson, Scott Brown, Steven Whittaker, Ivan Sproule and David Murphy in recent years, Fletcher's move will be regarded once again as Hibs cashing in on what he described as the "benchmark" for youth development in Scotland.

He said: "I understand as a supporter myself how the fans feel seeing a wonderful young player moving on but I think every club in Scotland is a selling club.

"I would have loved the opportunity to work with Steven but the speculation over his future has been going on for 18 months now and the English Premier League is a big carrot for any young player. We wish him well but a lot of people at Hibs have to take great credit for bringing him to the club and nurturing him over the years.

"Yes, there's a wee tinge of disappointment but we still have the likes of Derek Riordan, Colin Nish, Jonatan Johansson, Abdessalem Benjelloun is coming back and hopefully also Merouane Zemmama. We've also got the two youngsters coming up from the Under-19s and I was reading Kurtis saying he fancies his chances.

"It's now up to me to produce the next Steven Fletcher, to see what's coming through the system."

Rather than immediately demand a slice of the Fletcher transfer fee to reinvest in his squad, Hughes made it clear he'll carry out a thorough assessment of the squad, augmented by the signing of Patrick Cregg, he inherited from Mixu Paatelainen.

That process begins when the players return for pre-season training tomorrow and only then will Hughes begin reshaping his pool of players. He said: "I hope the fans will be patient and trusting.

"I know they want a team that excites them, a side which plays the way we feel Hibs should play. It's my job to put my own stamp on the team. I'll be looking to see what is there and what we need to enhance it.

"It's a non-stop process, it doesn't happen overnight."

My only concern about Yogi encouraging the younger strikers coming through is that when Stokes comes in next week it kinda contradicts his statement.

So zat Fletchy away doon the road Mr Petrie?
Aye John, 3 million is a good bit of business.
But the guys on the EEN forum ur sayin that he’s wurth 5 mullion
That’s as may be John, but we are happy with this result. We’ve been planning it for years.
So how much am a gettin tae spend?
We let you sign Creggs didn’t we?
Aye, but he’s p:sh.
And you’ve got Alan O’Brien ands JJ to work with.
A need tae show the fans that a ken whit am daein in the transfer market.
Well that’s difficult John, we’re committed to having low debt, we’ve got Deek on massive wages and there’s been a huge increase in the price of bricks. We’ve put a deposit down on half a ton.
Maybe we kin brick up the goals then.

Absolutely delighted by the sale. Fletch did good for us. But excellent money for a player that, as far as I'm aware, many fans wanted away from Easter Road. Do we need to sign another striker? Deek and Nish upfront should work well, also got Benji coming back, all is well I feel

Hardly think that this is something to laugh at.
Hibs are totally solvent, even more so now, with another £3m in the pot, and do indeed have the finest resources of emerging talent in the country.

Hearts on the other hand.....well, do I really have to go over it?

Lets face it, It wasn't like we didn't know he was on his way.
A reasonable amount for a player who hasn't realy lived up to the reputaion he had been given, hope he does well though all the best Steven.
As for Stokes that has been on Yogi's back burner since he arrived.

#17 He'll be a loss, but not a huge loss in my opinion. He never scored more than maybe 10 SPL goals a season for us (although his excellent all-round play will be missed). Play Derek Riordan in his natural position up front for a whole season and I'm confident he'll net 20+ goals. Luckily we the strikers department is something we still have a bit of talent left in.

No surprise, we all knew he was offski anyway.

Delighted with the "potential" amount of this transfer, especially the inital down payment of nigh on £3M...

Equally delighted that he didnt get shipped along the M8 as well. Good to see a player with a bit of real ambition to show himself off with one of the lesser EPL clubs with the obvious hope of graduating once more to the European challengers of that league.

Good luck Steven.

The main thing now is that wether it's actual fees or covering wages in loan deals big Yogi gets some coin from this to bring in decent players. If Stokes comes in thats excellent but we really need another keeper and our midfield could do with another boost.

Yogi needs to make sure we have good defensive options too.

However as things stand I'm quite pleased with how things are shaping up for the coming season, lets hope that we do indeed get Zoomer back along with Benji.

Well doen the tash, another great piec of business.

Anyone who watches Hibs week in, week out, knows fletch is the most over rated player in the SPL. Yeah he has scored some crackers but how many shots in a game does he have from out side the box, which trundle along the ground going miles wide as he has not hit it properly.

As for the last 2 seasons, i dont think the goals he scored were enough to be classed as a £3m player, considering half of them were penalties.

Maybe Pat Mcginley only watches the highlights on the tv where he only see his 1 goal in 4 games, but doesnt show his 20 miss hit shots a game and his constant falling over and whining.

Wont be overly missed, a confident JJ or benji would be better for us.

I refer to my post of yesterday in which I explained to you about football contracts and their termination dates. Similarly, the "transfer window" opens on 1st June, not 1st July.

You may also notice that Hibs, Burnley and Steven Fletcher agreed this transfer yesterday.

#38 The Gorgie Boys Are Wrong Again

Let me explain this to you and I'll type it slowly so you might have a chance of understanding it.

Scotland has a transfer window which opens on 1st July and ends on 31 August. If Hibs wanted to sell a player to another Scottish club they would have to wait until 1st July before that club could register the players contract.

However, England's transfer window opens on 1st June and closes on 31st August. As Steven Fletcher went to Burnley, a team that play in England, they were able to sign him and register his contract yesterday, Tuesday 30 June.

If any of the English teams who apparently have shown an interest in signing Rob Jones wanted top make an offer for him, they could have done so from 1st June onwards.

Once again you have proven yourself to be a complete and utter phanny.

Away and play with the buses while the knowledgable grown-ups discuss footbal matters.

Hearts 0, Hibs 7
Scottish First Division,
01 January, 1973

ALREADY dubbed the "greatest game in history" by some Hibs fans, this match produced the widest margin of victory between the two teams for over 50 years.

What made the outcome even more satisfying for Hibs – aside from the fact that the match was at Tynecastle –was that their bitter rivals had only conceded three goals in their previous 131 hours of league football at home.

That day though, Hearts lost three goals in the opening 26 minutes, were trailing 5-0 at half-time and could have lost even more heavily had it not been for a trio of outstanding saves by keeper Kenny Garland from Pat Stanton, Alan Gordon and Jimmy O'Rourke.

O'Rourke gave Hibs the lead in nine minutes when he turned the ball home from six yards and that was followed seven minutes later by another from Gordon, who converted an inch-perfect pass from Alex Edwards.

Hearts found themselves three goals down when Alex Cropley nodded on for Arthur Duncan to force a shot over the line. With ten minutes still to go before the break, Cropley volleyed a glorious left-footer past Garland from more than 20 yards to make it 4-0 and, two minutes later, a Cropley cross and a Duncan header brought Hibs' fifth.

After 56 minutes, O'Rourke slid the ball home to establish himself as No.1 goalscorer in the country at the time and the final goal arrived with 15 minutes left when Duncan squared for Gordon to head in.

Stanton admitted he was so taken aback by the margin of victory that he had just one pint in celebration after the match and the magnitude of what had just happened out on the pitch took several days to sink in.

He said: "We had been playing well and I think that, in the previous game, we had played Aberdeen and won 2-1 or 3-1 but it could have been a real doing.

"We were confident but we knew it was never easy to go to Tynecastle, no matter how you had been playing in the run-up to the game. I can remember early on

I see that you're not quite over your Hibs obsession yet. Quite worrying really. Why, just why are you so obsessed with us? Ever day, without fail, you turn up here posting the same yad. Poor deluded fool. You really need to get some form of life.

Oh aye, and I'd be willing to bet that you have a seriously small tadger.

Skysports.com understands Falkirk midfielder Kevin McBride has followed John Hughes to Hibernian.

McBride was out of contract at Falkirk, having been signed by Hughes from Darlington 18 months ago.

He made 52 appearances for the Bairns, but has opted to head to Easter Road to be reunited with new Hibs boss Hughes.

A two-year deal has been agreed for McBride to become the second signing since Hughes left Falkirk for Hibs.

Earlier this week, Hughes snapped up another of his Falkirk old boys after bringing in Patrick Cregg on a free transfer.

Abe

Initially I wondered whether he was a cunning wind-up merchant. Latterly, I've realised that he's not.

Having read some of the dross he's posted on the Yam thread this evening, respect is something I do not have for him. More sympathy. I feel his pain.
