Hearts star Stewart gets Scotland call-up for Macedonia clash

HEARTS midfielder Michael Stewart has received an international call-up for Scotland's forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Iceland. Several withdrawals have left national coach George Burley with a depleted squad and he has again turned to the influential Tynecastle player.

Stewart was a late addition to the squad last month when Scotland drew with Northern Ireland at Hampden, appearing as a second half substitute in the 0-0 draw. He was excluded from Burley's original party but will join the national squad at their base on the banks of Loch Lomond this afternoon.

Scotland face Macedonia in Skopje on Saturday afternoon before travelling to Reykjavik to face Iceland next Wednesday.

Quality player is Mickey and his form so far this season is one of the reason we are sitting 3rd.
He stated himself a few weeks ago that our previous managers have been useless and he knew more about the game than they did.
Should have been in the original squad IMO but he hasn't quite got all the relevant qualifications.

With regard to the story; a player is let go by the flariest, flair-meisters in the history of flair football, ‘cos he’s not considered good enough to play their unique brand of mind-boggling footballing brilliance, ends up at Hearts, plays the best football of his career and breaks into the Scotland squad.

Does that sound familiar to anyone else?

Hmm..It's good to have your players in national squads of course, but I wish I was sure that Stewart was really deserving of this.
Firstly, I reckon he was pretty gash last season (mind you he wasn't alone), and other than a great game vs. Motherwell, I don't see that he's been THAT terrific so far. My worry is that his head will swell again, (which may have been his trouble before) and now he's got an "I'm ex-Man U and now Scotland" bit of bragging in the pubs and clubs.
He needs to play well for a full season or thereabouts before I'm convinced he's got his head on straight.

It is in fact more properly called the "Union FLAG",not the Union Jack....however,to me it'll always be a "butchers apron", and not something that I personally would wish to fly, and certainly not while we have a saltire.
I believe that it's quite right that the club do NOT sell Union flags and the like, firstly because like it or no. it DOES/CAN have political associations at a scottish football match...and secondly, I'm not anxious to be thought of in the same way as the mindless Copeland Road crew who seem so attached to it

...are you maintaining that those who fly this flag at football grounds are doing this as a gesture of support for our soldiers in foreign lands etc??
Isn't it possible that there is a more sinister reason? That they wish to demonstrate their "support" for the protestant ascendency in Northern Ireland for example?.....or are they all such great students of history that they've all decided that the history of the flag is SO glorious, and that their love of it is SO great, that they need to fly it at a football game.

The waving of Union Jacks at football matches is only done as a jibe at certain opposition. I've always hated seeing them at Tynie. Maybe its a generational thing and I hope it dies out and the only national flag seen is the saltire. Stopping the sale of Union Jack merchandise was one of the more sane things that Mad Vlad has done.

Can Rangers fans seperate the image of the Union Jack with the idea of sectarianism? No, the majority can't. Mo Johnston was there only catholic player in something like 80 years and it would have been longer had the Gers not feared action from UEFA over their "unoffical" policy. (incidentally Mo always wore long sleeves to hide irish national slogan tatoos on his arms)

The Hearts emblem contains the only national flag we need to see at Tynie - the Saltire.

Anyway all this talk of ‘the union’ will soon be redundant. The SNP have released their excellent plans for the future today. It will undoubtedly see a further rise in their popularity and will be another giant step towards independence; the ONLY way forward for Scotland.

Although I am proud to be in the Armed Forces I dont wave the Union Flag at football matches. I have found those who do wave the flag as a sign of stirring things up with the opposition fans. I personnaly dont like seeing the flag at Tynie and prefer to see a Saltire instead, but thats my opinion.

He has been a great player for us over the last 18 months and now that he looks fit, he should be the first name on the Scotland teamsheet.
