RANGERS 0, HEARTS 3
Scottish Premier Division
20 January, 1996
AT a time when the Rangers juggernaut was powering towards nine successive titles, this was a momentous victory by a Hearts side being moulded into one of the most respected in the country by Jim Jefferies.

It was also the day that Magic Johnston truly earned his nickname. Allan Johnston, a boyhood Rangers supporter, became the first Hearts player to score a hat-trick at Ibrox since Andy Black in 1937. He had only just turned 22 and instantly became the most sought after young talent in Scottish football.

An early goal set the catalyst for Hearts' domination. Johnston, shunted inside to a more central attacking role by his manager, fastened on to a John Colquhoun cross with David Robertson napping, and from there the visitors assumed control.

The second half brought two of the most composed finishes ever witnessed at Ibrox as Johnston underlined Hearts' superiority and completed his hat-trick. His second was a deft lob over the Scotland goalkeeper Andy Goram, followed by a cool side-step and finish with seven minutes remaining.

Rangers were without the influential Paul Gascoigne and Ally McCoist but their line-up still contained the likes of Brian Laudrup and Gordon Durie. Walter Smith's side had gone 19 games unbeaten in the league. Add the fact that Goram had gone eight league games without conceding a goal and it was no surprise that there were joyous scenes among Hearts players and fans at the final whistle. Johnston cited some words of advice from Gascoigne in a previous meeting with Rangers as the catalyst for his one-man demolition job. "Gazza did have a few words with me on the park," said Johnston. "It was nice of him and showed that, while some people make him out to be a nutcase, he's actually a nice guy. It's thanks to my Hearts team-mates who set up the chances, that I scored four times against Rangers that season." Johnston left Tynecastle at the end of season 1995/96 and joined the French club Rennes on freedom of contract. He would later sign for Rangers following three productive years at Sunderland, and play for Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday before ending up at Kilmarnock, but wherever he goes in life he will forever be remembered for his display on that cold winter's afternoon at Ibrox.

Hearts: Rousset, Locke, Ritchie, McPherson, McManus, Bruno, Johnston, Colquhoun, Lawrence, Fulton, Pointon. Subs: Robertson, Mackay, Nelson.
