THE BBC apologised today for missing the live announcement of Glasgow’s victorious Commonwealth Games bid.
Hundreds of thousands of viewers across Britain tuned in to watch Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell read out the winning city this lunchtime.

But when BBC Scotland switched to the Sri Lankan hotel where the vote was taking place
, it had missed the moment by seconds and instead showed the Glasgow delegation jumping for joy.

The special BBC Scotland programme was being broadcast across the UK on News 24.

A spokesman for BBC Scotland said: "We were trying to get the announcement itself. But we got little warning when the announcement was made.

"We were broadcasting live from a school and quickly cut to get the result.

"They actually missed the announcement itself by a few seconds."

He added: "If viewers felt disappointed at not getting the announcement, then that is something we are sorry for.

"It is a live situation and it is unfortunate that sometimes things like this happen.

"Overall the programme captured the mood in the run-up to it."

As well as coverage from Sri Lanka, the BBC was also broadcasting from its studio in Glasgow, as well as three outside locations in the city.

BBC Scotland presenter Jackie Bird was anchoring the coverage from Sri Lanka next to a swimming pool.

No only did they miss the broadcast live on TV. Radio 2 also nearly missed it as Jeremy Vine was chatting to someone and it was bearly audible when it did come!!!

You bet id it had been an ENGLISH city there would have been a 5-hour special beforehand and an in-depth analysis for 5-hours afterwords.

BBC Scotland is just dreadful and has got a lot worse in the last 2 years. Radio Scotland is particularly bad with slovenly speaking presenters, inane laughter over nothing and constant technical problems including inaudible phone ins. The content is often equally bad.

It is also becoming very parochial.

Missing the live link of the games should be a sacking offence for someone. Pure and simple - it is inept.

no Scottish team in the Olympics, well not until a least 2020 at the earliest. IOC have the final say which nations competes at the Olympics

I feel as a former citizen of Edinburgh I must apologise
most profusely for missing the announcement, how shamefully unpatriotic of me. I was working at the time.

There was an air of predictability around this farce. With an inept cast including Jackie Bird and her "best friend " David in the studio and a backdrop that included the hapless grinning and permanently absent member of parliament for Banff and Buchan. It all bodes well for the Hogmanay celebrations with Bird & Co.
