BUSINESS owners are outraged by an attempt to open up a betting shop in a thriving retail street.
Proposals to transform the former Greig Firth hairdressers in Bruntsfield Avenue have been submitted to the council by Morrison Bookmakers Ltd.

Local business owners claim a betting shop would hit their trade and lower property prices.

Wendy Beaumont, owner of Halibut & Herring on Bruntsfield Place, said: "It's really going to pull the area down. If it is allowed, it will be the start of the lowering of quality in this area."

Kathleen Sinclair, owner of Scoosh, also on Bruntsfield Place, is also worried about the effect it would have on schoolchildren. She said: "There's too many kids around who may want to go into it and it could start a ball rolling. I also think that it might attract the wrong clientele."

Bridget Stevens, chair of Merchiston Community Council, added: "A bookies in Bruntsfield would significantly alter the character of the street. It consists of small, family shops and if the betting shop comes along it will be an altogether different animal."

Oh yes! Best place for a bookie. Just think of all the Burghmuir kids they'll get in. Maybe even some of the older ones from Bruntsfield primary. Sound investment. NOT

Greedy folk just don't want their house prices to come down now do they. Nimbies.

Why does this not surprise me?

Perhaps a good bet, assuming the shop opens, would be whether or not the skate park will be built in the Meadows

Common denominator?

#4 'They know the difference between progressive and regressive'
WTF are you on about? The fact is that the bookies will be opening there because they reckon there are punters there. Simple economics. All this corruption of the kids etc is just ridiculous nonsense from people who have led a sheltered life.
The people who will use the shop are not paedos Jennifer, just real people who like a gamble, like everyone who does the lottery in fact.
Any complaints about haveing lottery terminals in shops in Bruntsfield? Nope didnt think so.

Listen to what the woman says - the kids will be be queuing up to put their coupons on, the minute it opened!
Year 8 would be skiving Drama and cheering on the hot tip they got for the 2.10 from Epsom.
Snobbery at its most blatant.

# 8 Randan Spot on Lottery Terminals=Gambling
Betting Shop=Gambling
I fail to see the difference, and anyway the Licensing board (with which I have several years history ) are not allowed to grant or deny a licence on moral grounds. Although some of the Licensing board members need to be reminded of this year after year

Not to mention the obvious educational benefits of gambling: If Local Boy wins at 7/2 and I have an each way stake of 50p on it what are my winnings?

Do you know any types of people who want their house prices to come down!

Complete snobbery yet again.
As for comparing a bookies shop to animals, they just sound daft.

It is of course the second oldest trade in the book. Things could be worse - they could be getting a "sauna".

And its about time the school kids actually learned some maths - they seem to learn precious little in school!
