BUSINESS leaders have called on the Scottish Government to ditch its £2 billion Forth crossing proposals and revert to its original, less expensive plans.
The Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) said the government should look again at the initial plans for a wider bridge with light rail potential and a motorway approach.

The call came as transport engineering specialist John Carson criticised the government and Transport Scotland for their "preposterous" costings, claiming international comparisons had shown the bridge could be built for £1bn, not the £4bn previously claimed.

But a spokeswoman for Transport Scotland said: "The new bridge, together with the dedicated public transport corridor on the existing bridge, will ensure the capacity to deal with the predicted demand for cross-Forth travel.

Using the international cost comparisons for Millau - Tarn Gorge and the Denmark & Sweden crossing the Forth Bridge at £2bn is twice as expensive as these similar bridges, particualry the Denmark & Sweden link which has tunnels and also has to cross sea lanes and its a road and rail combined bridge. Is the cost of concrete and Steel much more in Scotland than France or Denmark ? The existing consulting engineers should be scaked and a Swede or Frenchman called so Scotsen and Women can get a new bridge at a fair price. The SNP canny even see when they are being ripped awf, Hey jimmy this is not a PFI ya ken.

More drivel by John Carson. As the bridge will be subject to international tender, it doesn't really matter the provisional estimates. If someone can build it for £1bn then they will get the job- there's no conspiracy!!

The nonsense spouted by Carson et al during the tunnel Vs bridge debate even managed to alienate his pals in the SNP after so many shrill 'fat'.
