STAFF at East Lothian Council have been given just £200 in store vouchers for serving the same length of time as their controversial chief executive who is picking up £130,000.
Six workers at East Lothian Council with more than 40 years service were each given the vouchers for John Lewis, it was reported today.

A further 167 employees at the council with more than 30 years service were given £100 vouchers and 458 with m
ore than 20 years at the authority got £50 tokens.

Mr Lindsay, who is taking redundancy pay on top of a pension of more than £50,000-a-year and a lump sum of more than £150,000, reportedly made a speech at a ceremony for staff in Haddington.

A council spokesman insisted it was not fair to compare the staff awards to Mr Lindsay's package.

"There is no valid comparison to be made between these awards and a redundancy/early retirement payment to a council employee, whatever level they work at," he said

But politicians and unions have condemned the apparent different way the senior official and his staff were treated.

SNP Lothians MSP Kenny MacAskill said: "This adds insult to injury and it's clear that something is far wrong in East Lothian Council.

"Years of dedicated service in local government should be recognised.

"It's unacceptable that there are riches for the chief executive but only tokens for the staff."

A spokesman for the public service union Unison said the move was likely to anger staff.

"Other local government staff are rarely in a position to benefit to this extent and it is completely understandable that the comparison between this purported payout and the vouchers given to other long-serving staff invited anger and resentment."

# 1 & 2 - So if you retire after 40 years with your employer you wouldn't want a retirement gift ? No reward for loyal service ?

The East Lothian Council Web Site has been down since the original story came to light. This means you cant get the Council Minutes or Papers on line, and you certainly cant contact a Local Councillor. Havent any of them got the nerve to stand up and reverse this horrendous decision?

To put the cat among the pigeons, this is a brand shiny new scheme which has just been introduced, allowing long serving staff to walk away with up to 66 weeks' pay. Guess who is charge of guiding policy at ELC?
You guessed it, Mr Lindsay, who is also, by the way, the first person to benefit from it. Can he say honestly that when he was drawing up this new policy with the Head of HR he didn't have his imminent retirement in mind? How can ELC say that this represents 'Best Value', or anything approaching it?
Add to this the dodginess of the whole situation - Mr Lindsay's post has been made redundant, but the post of CEO hasn't - they intend to recruit from the remaining 4 Directors - is that really in the spirit of fairness?
Something is rotten in the state of East Lothian!!!

All councils are the same.........jobs for the boys!

I always wondered what the council tax was spent on.........now we know.

Disgusting, but nothing like the surprises me now.

I am still flabbergasted at this shocking mis-use of public funds. What is Unison going to do about this ..... absolutely nothing as usual, the same as they are doing about our re-evaluation which should have been processed before now along with back payments to Council Staff. Yet again another shambles within a corrupt council.
