EAST Lothian Council was under fire today for promoting an internal candidate to replace chief executive John Lindsay who is quitting with £100,000 in redundancy pay on top of a £200,000 retirement package.
Alex McCrorie, currently head of corporate finance at the council, is due to be formally appointed as the authority's new top official.

SNP councillor Michael Russell said: "Because of what happened earlier and the lack of external competition, the council elected in May should revisit this."

But senior Labour councillor John Ross said although Mr Lindsay was made redundant Mr McCrorie would have the same title, but the role would be different as it would combine the responsibilities with the finance job he already does.

The new post was to replace Mr Lindsay as he had to be made redundant at a huge pay off settlement. He was in charge of apples and oranges. Newly promoted Mr McCrorie will be in charge of oranges and apples. There is a difference?

I'm still waiting for a refund of my late father's council tax after more than two years. I'm told it's due but with this level of efficiency is any internal candidate worth a candle?

So how long before this one makes himself redundant.

Woops! Director of Finance... let me think....is he not the one that should have pointed out the waste of cash in giving the Chief Executive an unneccessary £130 ,000? Surely not!

Interesting to see John Ross put up as the latest Labour scapegoat as well spouting this rubbish, obviously he does not want to be re-elected either.

This is most unfair, if you have ever actually met any of the individuals mentioned you would realise that they're all tossers.

I always understood that if there was a vacancy it had to be advertised or have the rules changed?
