THOMAS JONASSON last night effectively quit Edinburgh Scotwaste Monarchs after putting the brakes on his UK racing career.
The talented Swede, who came under fire for his non-appearance at Somerset Rebels last week, says he cannot cope with riding in three countries any more.

The 20-year-old, who races in Sweden and the lucrative Polish League, feels taking a break fr
om Britain's Premier League competition, is the only sensible solution to curtail his current schedule.

Jonasson informed Monarchs boss John Campbell of his decision on Monday. "I thought he might have discussed it further but obviously the people who advised him told him this was the best thing to do," said Campbell.

"Thomas said he wasn't quitting – he's simply taking time out. But I don't think he understands that he cannot simply take a rest from riding in the UK and come back in five weeks. He is out and that's it."

It's no secret that Jonasson's failure to arrive at Somerset in a match Monarchs eventually lost 50-40 angered Campbell and some may conclude that Jonasson has jumped before he was pushed. Jonasson said: "I cannot handle riding in three countries at the moment, it's just too much.

"It's hard work racing in just two countries. I know a lot of people will be angry but I'm ready to take that, and I'm also ready to pay back sponsorship money to anyone who wants that."

The Swede added that he hasn't ruled out riding for Monarchs in the future. "If Monarchs want me back I'd be happy with that," he added. "If they don't want me I'll stop racing in the UK."

Campbell said: "When we come to deciding our side for next season then we will take Thomas into consideration."

Monarchs are allowed a rider replacement for Jonasson for 28 days and hope to have a replacement in place next week.
