HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen was today facing a player crisis ahead of Thursday night's derby as he pondered the prospect of travelling to Tynecastle without SEVEN first team regulars.
Paatelainen already knew he'd be without the suspended trio of Rob Jones, Sol Bamba and Colin Nish for the final clash of the season with Hearts.

But now the Easter Road outfit could be making the short journey across the city also missing Chris Hogg, Denes Rosa, David van Zanten and Grzegorz Szamotulski.

Hogg will join Jones, Bamba and Nish on the suspended list if an appeal against the red card he was shown during Saturday's defeat by Dundee United fails while goalkeeper Szamotulski has already been all but ruled out.

Szamotulski, who has been battling a knee injury in recent weeks, sat out the visit from his old club and Paatelainen fears he won't be fit in three days' time while midfield star Rosa and full-back Van Zanten were both injured against United.

Van Zanten was receiving treatment after taking a boot in the face when referee Stevie O'Reilly flashed the red card at Hogg following his challenge on United winger Craig Conway, a decision described as "harsh" by both Paatelainen and Tannadice boss Craig Levein.

To add salt to Hibs' wounds, Tayside substitute David Goodwillie claimed the winner as the home side were reduced to just nine men, so ending the Edinburgh club's already faint hopes of claiming a place in the Europa League next season.

Paatelainen, who is hoping to have a decision on Hogg made sooner rather than later to help his preparations for Thursday night, said: "I thought Chris went totally and wholeheartedly for the ball, it was not malicious or over-aggressive and was possibly a yellow card, no more than that."

Without Hogg, Jones and Bamba, Paatelainen would be forced to field a makeshift central defensive partnership against Hearts with Ian Murray most likely joining Steven Thicot, who deputised for his skipper at the weekend, in the back four.

But, Paatelainen revealed, that's not an end to his worries. He said: "The problem does not stop there, we have another four or five nursing injuries.

"We are going to have plenty of players missing through injury and suspension but we will have 11 fit players and it will be up to them to do the job."

Rosa picked up a muscle injury in a tackle from David Robertson, a challenge which earned the United midfielder a yellow card, and is a "wait and see" according to Paatelainen who has his fingers crossed Van Zanten will recover in time.

Today Paatelainen explained the delay in replacing Van Zanten with Darren McCormack – a possible contender for a place on Thursday but one which would need careful consideration given his recent conviction for assault on Hearts striker Calum Elliot.

He said: "We thought it was just going to take a minute or so and that David would be able to carry on but unfortunately the physio wasn't able to stop the bleeding."

Dont worry Hearts cant score. The stupidity of Moronov selling Velicka was clear against a mediocre Rangers side. There is absolutely no point in Hearts qualifying for Europe unless Moronov buys a proven goal scorer.

Mixu should throw on some of the U19's champs - what have got to lose?

HMFC will be favourites to win, but remember it's a derby ladies, gentlemen and Yaks anything could happen.

And as Axl Rose would sing "Anything goes".

i have nothing to fear about going to tynie without some regulars, Hearts were dire yesterday, as were the gers, talking of european football at tyecastle is a huge joke, even Shamrock Rovers would cuff them over two legs.

Injuries are a problem for Hibs but their biggest handicap remains a Manager that lacks tactical ability.
Finishing in the top half may have given Hibs only a short term break.
Unless there are changes off the park I'm really pessimistic about next season.

Reading the type of comments on here by the hibs fans really does give you a deep insight into the psyche of the typical hobo . If you could only lose that collective chip on your shoulders you have about HMFC you would be able to see the position you are in . No debt great under 19 team good youth policy you should be aiming for the moon next season but guess what ? all you want is to be better than your city rivals even if it means bottom 6 places for both teams as long as you can finish above us which btw never really happens that often yet still the penny wont drop . A good hearts and hibs side will help each other in the long run think about it .

#1&2 Am i missing something here? We're getting grief from you about our team not scoring goals and your mob have scored a massibe 2 more than us this season? Only 2 more goals from the best front line in Scotland?!?! What a shame they aren't Scottish or we could sort out the national goalscoring problem - oh, hang on a minute, they are Scottish. So why aren't they all playing for the national team? Could it be that they are utter garbage?
I couldn't give a flying f**k if we don't score that many goals. We're 3rd. We're in pole position for Europe - you can't even make it!! Unimaginable that you can sit and take the pi55 out of us about losing at Ibrox when you just got horsed at home by the arabs!!
p.s. 1 up front is usualy when we defend. When we attack, it's usually 3-4-3 so just you keep harping on about something you quite clearly know hee haw about!

It's a derby and an easy win at home by the Hearts at least by 3 goals. This was my tip before the call offs by the frightened hobos, but it could well be even more now. Going to love watching the fat one exploding on the sidelines and i hope Csaba gives the portly beached whale a good slap, What's happening with the hobos and the back door lol?

#21 Er ... 0-2 in the cup would say you are wrong!

Greetings to all you posters from the Andy Duncan Clinic, Hibs Supporters Club.
Extra methadon in the jug this morning it would seem.
The reality of the matter is Hibs will not be minus seven first team regulars, and it will be a close game.
That said, if we can't beat Hibs on thursday, it will probably mean we won't finish in third place.
I'd be very confident in saying Hearts could give Hibs a ramming, IF we had a GOAL SCORER, but we don't so I can't.
However I believe we can scrape a win... by the odd goal.
28

A Jambo come rain or shine,

#22 Really? I'm fairly certain the stats showed we had 60% of the posesion so unless you were only watching 40% of the game you'd have struggled not to see us! Then again, 60% of 90 minutes is 54 minutes - that's probably about how much time it takes you to "get your fix" so maybe you didn't see!
"But Hertz are p!$$her and that's the truth" a) Are you 5 and b) no we aren't, we're above you in the league. Of course, if by "p!$$her" you mean "worse style of football" then of course you're better - you play free flowing football .... don't you?
You're going to get gubbbed - accept it now and it'll be less painful on Friday morning!

comment of the year goes to Pazuzu for this little gem "Hertz in Europe, aye - then out again quicker than an MP in a Soho br0thel"

quite right - hearts could NEVER compete with your fantastic Intertoto Cup runs!!

hibs are never actually IN europe before they get hosed out - usually by either a bunch of fisherman or carpenters.

close second though goes to livewire for this little ditty "Hibs were p!$h and there's no taking that away.
But Hertz are p!$$her and that's the truth."

quite clearly the league says otherwise but then who are we to argue - we are third - hibs are sixth....clearly hibs are the better side....how we even argue!!??

#29 WOW - you're really good at this debating lark! Ignore previous posts proving your inadequacy, then chuck in two almost identical posts calling people names! Don't debate their posts whatever you do otherwise you might get drawn into a discussion you have no chance of winning!
So, care to answer my points at 26? Or to discuss which of my points at 28 are "fantasy?" Ok - the "getting your fix" bit may not be entirely accurate but i'd like to hear you DEBATE the rest of it.

He's telling us he's from West Pilton, I guess we're meant to shake in our boots about that. Aye right!

Murray has to be moved in to cover at centre back. McCormack would be my choice of CB partner, would put Thicot into midfield with Rankin. I don't trust Mixup to get it right sadly. I see he's still giving chances to garbage like Chisholm and AOB. Not fit to wear the jersey, either of them.

#36 Mixu playing players where they should be, I can only dream!

Please Mixu, for the love of God give Yantorno a game! I still cant believe the guy hasnt featured this year, wasnt even on the bench at the weekend, how Chisholm gets ahead of him is criminal.

We'll clearly miss those players but the big one is the goalkeeper. Maka just isnt up to it and if Hearts had any sense all they have to do is get some good crosses on top of him and he'll crumble.

As for #10 comment about the U19s, I would like to see them play some role this season but im not sure if a derby at Tynecastle is the best place for their debuts. Maybe one or 2 on the bench but I still think we have to put out a side with some experience.

Talk of us getting thumped is ridiculous, Jambos have said that before literally every game this season and seem to have not learned that just saying somethings going to happen doesnt make it come true. If we put out the right team then we can take all 3 points but another 4-2-4 and its gonna be a scrappy game again.

Just been doing a bit of maths while looking at the paper. League table looks interesting before the derby. If we , sorry when we stuff Hibs on Thursday & if Dundee Utd beat aberdeen we would then qualify for Europa cup qualifyers with aberdeen only able to get fourth if Hearts lost remaining 3 games and the sheep win 3 remaining. Anyhow im still hoping that when we beat Hibs (we will) then aberdeen beat Utd. 3rd is what we want !

Mixu's facing a player crisis? Well I'm quite sure that he can handle that no problem whatsoever eh big man?

Just like you handled a player crisis during the game on Saturday so effectively eh Mixu?

One defender player off the park with blood puring from a head wound then another gets red carded......... Thats 9 players on the park with 3 minutes to go and the game in the balance at 1-1 and you know only have a two man defence, do you:

A) Substitute the injured player and bring on a new defender immediately to balance you defence?

B) reorganise the team temporarily while the player recieves treatment to ensure your defence remains in tact?

C) Do neither but stand around & contemplate a substitution and scratch your head as your opponents merilly dance around your only two defenders and score the winner?

Answers on a postcard please to Mr. Tactically Mixedup, C/O Hibernina FC, Albion Road, Edinburgh.

For that carnage at the end of the game on Saturday alone Mixu should be shown the door. A total joke, Hibs had been pi$h all game but at least we would have held on for a 1-1 had he made the obvious decision and removed Van Zanten as soon as we were down to 9 men.... The mans a buffon and has just simply got to go....

It's not missing 7 players that concerns me about Thursday it's the man short in the dug out which worries me most and has done so for a very long time now....

With tactics like his we could get a beating of biblical proportions on Thursday...... I just hope Hearts play Nade up front on his own so we might scrape a wee 0-0 or dare I say even put theDick Turpin masks on and theive it by the odd goal......

I would be all for a debate but surely folk realise that it is a bank holiday and the schools are off today - ergo - numpties on the board :o)

Hibs were pretty useless at the weekend and by all accounts it's getting to the players (Rankin) with the system that Mixu is trying to use.

The derby on Thursday will be as unpredictable as ever with either team capable of winning. My heart goes with Hibs but my head says Hearts win.

I think its going to be very scrappy game but we can still put out a decent team if Mixu suddenly grows a brain. Possible line up (dont expect to see it):

Maka
McCormack Thicot Murray Hanlon
Rankin Stevenson Yantoro O'Brien
Riordan Fletcher

Not saying it would be our best team ever but we could still get Hogg back and its sounds like Van Zanten and Rosa can still make it. If we get them in I'll feel a lot better as I worry about our makeshift defence and Driver exploiting our weakness at RB.

you cant make this up!!

Let's start with the classic - "when was the last time you actually qualified for Europe - and I mean QUALIFIED" - the last time we QUALIFIED for europe was when we finished 2nd and went into Champs league qualifiers. In case your tiny brain cant quite get it - thats the definition of QUALIFYING for europe!!

the time before that we were in the uefa groups after already putting zelenjecar & braga. in those groups im pretty sure we were the first team to beat basle in basle in a european game.....

come to think of it when was the last time HIBS QUALIFIED for europe - not through the back door (inter-toto) as you guys are used to....lets remember you have to WIN the intertoto to get in the UEFA cup!!! and considering the time you "won" the "european cup" you were invited i think you show how much you know about football!!

come back to me when you have seen your team beat bayern munich and we can talk european nights!!

#43 Unfortunately you are now feeling how we did for 2 years although our poor management decisions we're all necessarirly down to the manager - more the fax machine!
Re Makalamby - not sure about lobbing crosses in on him - the last derby he played in he caught everything that came at him and had a good game. I did think he looked lost at the first Utd goal on saturday though.
59

neil1986,

#59 Must say, despite all the crazy stuff previously Vlad now seems to have unplugged the fax machine and let Laszlo get on with it, as I hibee I just wish he hadnt!

Maka is a strange one in that he has great games then seems to let in silly goals far too often. I think he's an excellent shot stopper and could be a very good keeper but I still feel his weak point is crosses, he seems hesitant to come for them and that creates panic in the defence. The Utd game is a classic example, some great saves but then a couple of basic errors and it costs us. Also, I think the defence we have out wonr help him much either.

#77 Pundit - don't you start. you've been quite normal of late and now you're up to your old tricks. "Gers had them on toast" I'm sorry - what game did you watch? Gers were mince. Only think we lacked was a cutting edge. We passed you off the park and you won because of our mistakes. Also, did you forget the last game at Ibrox or the last game at Tynie? One win against us and all of a sudden you've nothing to fear? Having watched the replays i wasn't sure he was clipped - both Rob Mclean and that tube Hartson think he was, but because Whittaker didn't mean to do it, it didn't count! Not sure that works really but there you go.
For what it's worth, your lot will draw on Saturday and proceed to drop points against Aberdeen and utd to lose the league.

do you have a brain - can you follow this :

if the "preliminary" rounds lead to European QUALIFICATION then that means the same "preliminary round" as you call it is by rights the "QUALIFYING" rounds exactly as i stated.

by finishing 3rd or 4th you have Qualified for Europe.
eg 5th cannot play the "preliminary round" as they did not QUALIFY.

call them what you want - hibs will still not be in it regardless....

No qualification for the European Championship.

Wish it was me mind instead of being at work....

I was listening to the commentary from Ibrox in the car yesterday when the commentator (cant remember who it was) gave the attendance as something like 47,668. He then proceeded to inform all listeners that he thought this was a great attendance for a game being held on a Sunday afternoon with all the trouble that causes with travel and the next day being a Monday etc etc...

I wonder at what point he realised hed made a total fool of himself because the day following the game in question was a public holiday and therefore less people would have work and be more willing to go along to the game anyway....

we can agree to disagree on the wording of how you deem qualify. i must just be with the old fashioned view of we did qualify for europe as to where we finished in the spl. we qualified for the preliminary round - not for a moment am i suggesting we made the knock out stages and i know where we finished in the group. at the end of the day it doesnt reallly matter as i said earlier you dont need to google it to know HIBS have NEVER even sniffed a UEFA group or preliminary round let alone come last in it!!!

#92 Did or did Hearts not play in the Champions League qualifying round? Did or did Hearts not then play in the UEFA cup qualifying round? I'll take it that you answer yes to both. On both occasions you'll find that teams playing in those rounds are playing in that competition. It's early rounds, but it's still the competition. It's like the 1st/2nd rounds of the FA cup - it's miles from the end but it's in the competition. It must be a competition because if you beat teams over 2 legs you progress to the next round - and to have a next round you must be in a competition.
By the way, the European championship is for countries not clubs.

Mixu doesn't have a problem.

We all know Hibs will not beat the jambos. So he is delivering to expectation, job done.

Hibs making the top six is an embarrassment.

They don't deserve to be there, they're not good enough to be there.

And when our best players leave at the end of the season, we'll replace them with sufficient quality to be able to compete with the first division.

Me? I just can't understand how Farmer accepts his investment only being as good as the first division.

Seems Hibs are destined to be the pernniel 99p store kinda club.

Of course, the success of the under 19 squad will be trumpeted as being good for the future. That's it with supporting Hibs, you have to accept the future at the expense of the present. It's always jam tomorrow.

IOsn't buying a season ticket akin to voting for mediocrity? After all, if the cash is already in the bank, what incentive is there to improve the product?

On the other hand, at least since he's been here we've challenged the OF, come 2nd and won the cup. Thursday for the Hibees could be a real humping.
We do have players who are just as good if not better than Hearts , what we don't have is a manager.
Mixu does not have a clue on tactics / team selection where as Hearts have IMO the manager of the year.
He has got the best out of an average team and with a decent striker could have done some real damage.
I never want Hibs to lose especially against "that mob" but if it means Mixu packs his bags then maybe just maybe....

The downfall part - is i dont think celtic or rangers can really compete in europe or champions league - because they havent bought any quality - They just steal players from hibs , hearts, utd , or whoever is close to them in the league. january window - very handy !!
You might suggest manchester - but i dont think that the bigwigs in europe will ever let rangers get to another final again !!!! - Noble the ref whatever - just dont let the hooligans mass congregate again..

It's a derby and very few humpings are handed out in them irrespective of who is on the park.
