A NEW city council campaign has been launched to stop owners letting their dogs foul on Leith Links.
Posters and a leaflet aimed at educating people on appropriate behaviour have been distributed to coincide with National Poop Scoop Week.

The council has teamed up with the Dogs Trust and Keep Scotland Beautiful to encourage dog owners to help keep our public spaces clean for the summer.

Councillor Norman Work, the city's deputy health, social care and housing leader, said: "Dog fouling patrols are a daily activity for environmental wardens.

"These environmental wardens will continue to educate and raise awareness, but they will also take enforcement action on those who fail to clear up after their dogs."

John Summers, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, added: "It is a careless minority that are still leaving the mess behind for others to step in.

"Dog fouling can spoil our parks, pavements and beaches, but is a problem which KSB is determined to tackle."

A recent survey carried out by KSB, found two-thirds of people are more annoyed by dog dirt than anything else dropped on the country's streets.

Maybe traffic wardens could be diverted to sort out dog turds and careless owners.

How about getting the wardens to tackle the builders who use the large curbside bins as their own personal skips,no,thought not.To much hassle to take on a builder or some other people dumping large items huh...

There is no excuse for dog owners who dont pick up their dogs fouling of pavements,a hefty fine is what they need.

I have the answer for dog-owners who allow their dogs tp cr*p anywhere. Take the dogs off them and allow them only cats!

Some idiots walk their cats and they also do the toilet.

Only two by-laws need re-instatement and enforcing, in order to cut this c--p.
1. All dogs must be kept on a lead in public places.
2. All dogs must be licensed at £100 per annum.
Those two conditions will ensure that anyone who wants a dog is serious about it.

Para 2) "Posters and a leaflet aimed at educating people to appropriate behaviour......" So that must include all outdoor HUMAN urinators and defecators too?

This obsession with dog fouling reminds me of the story of Nero playing the fiddle whilst Rome burned around him.
The "authorities" are spending time , money and resources on relatively trifling matters such as dog fouling, piper music, car parking, whilst mayhem in the streets abounds. Knifing, shooting, drug dealing, mugging, con artists targeting the vulnerable, tourist robbing, handbag snatching, graffitti, underage drinking, youth gangs, alcoholics sitting around the city, aggressive beggars,....the list seems to be endless. If as much vigour was put into getting to grips with the aforementioned as with catching dog foulers I believe we would be more appreciative of the authorities.

Nice one Moder8, wouldn't that be great in real life? In the mean time we should put down the owners who don't clean up. I mean publicly humiliate them not ....... did you think I meant a wee trip to Seafield?

Stay alive people, it's the only way to live

Sure #9 so all those elderly people that only have their faithful pets for company should have that taken away from them. Because £100 per annum would likely do that. And look at all the pets that would end up in the Dog and Cat home. Don't think you have thought this through very well.... unless your an animal hater. The ignorant persons who don't clean up after their pets should be fined, named and shamed...Something that will stick in their mind.. nice and clearly and hopefully embarrass them enough to do the right thing.

My Great Dane dumps large items. B*ggered if I'm picking it up.
That's what I pay you for.

Moder8,

So the authorities put more effort into catching dog foulers than catching the prepetrators of shootings and stabbings? No need to exagerrate to make your point.

Incidentally, did they really need to spend money on a survey to find that dog sh!t was what people most disliked being littered on our streets. I mean is there anything else that comes remotely close?

You are assuming people only people who let their dogs run "wild" don't pick up after them.

I've seen wifey's (plural) walking their dogs in the centre of town when I've been sitting in my car at junctions, not pick up after a sneaky wee look to make sure no one is looking.

I am not really on the lookout for this sort of thing so for me to see it twice in a short time suggests its really common.

11 Moder8,

I also meant to mention that you MUST know that whilst what you have just said is amusing in a kind of "man bites dog" way it's probably not actually true.

Douglas,

Good question. OK, let's put it another way. On a scale of 1 to 10 of revulsion, does anything come within 3 points of dog sh!t.

Better?

Better.
Maybe dropping 'poop scoop' in favour of something more adult like 'excrement shovel' would give more edge to any campaign.
BTW ever had cat sh1t under the nails while weeding? That's only one point of separation. :o(
