COCAINE will soon become a bigger problem than heroin in Edinburgh, according to Edinburgh's outgoing drugs and alcohol tsar.
Tom Wood said the falling cost of the drug – now around the price of a glass of wine – means it is no longer the preserve of professionals, but is already being used together with heroin in some parts of Edinburgh. He said this would lead to the same
antisocial problems associated with heroin, such as crime and prostitution.

Mr Wood is handing over to the council's director of health and social care, Peter Gabbitas, at the end of the month.

He told councillors: "In this city, we are living with the legacy of heavy heroin use in the 1980s.

"Drug-taking and heavy alcohol use is normal in many parts of society in our city. We are not at the top of the bell curve yet, and there will be a huge increase in child protection referrals and drug deaths for the next five or six years. It's a long road ahead.

"Cocaine is here, and in some parts of the city it is already a bigger problem than heroin. In five years time, it will be the major problem in Edinburgh and east Scotland. It won't be restricted to the wine bars – it will permeate throughout and it is really difficult to treat."

Mr Wood said a heavy cocaine habit is just as addictive as heroin. But he also said that a "reality check" is needed, because the level of heavy alcohol abuse is 20 times higher than drug use.

Cocaine is the price of a glass of wine? Utter nonsense. Either its not cocaine or its a very expensive glass of wine. Check the facts for once.

"He said this would lead to the same antisocial problems associated with heroin, such as crime and prostitution."

So much then for "Things go better with coke".

surely it depends on the amount of coke and the size / kind of wine whether they are around the same price.

Its mixed messages like this that are causing the problem.

perhaps we should have separate cues for cocaine purchases

cocaine is the price of a glass of wine and wine is cheaper than water, if you follow the rhetoric

i want to know these peoples dealers at the very least

"..antisocial problems associated with heroin, such as crime and prostitution." So this is the same person who, when he was a senior cop, was promoting a Tolerance zone where street prostitutes operated under the control of their pimps who provided illegal drugs to keep their habit going?
Perhaps if he had concentrated on crime prevention and enforcement then rather than trying to manipulate a social strategy he might have got on better and this problem would have been as bad. Goodbyeeee!

The price of a glass of wine! Tom Wood gets paid to much if that is the wine he is drinking!

Tom Wood did nothing to fight drugs as Deputy Chief Constable and has maintained his stance throughout.
He is a waste of money. His contribution is to state the obvious and what solutions does he bring? That's right, none!

"Edinburgh's outgoing drugs and alcohol tsar"? Would this would be the sinecure, never publicly advertised -a ragbag remit cobbled together by Tom Wood's then-cronies on the Cooncil to ensure this loose cannon stayed 'inside the tent'? Speaks volumes that the 'post' is now to just drift away, like a nasty smell.

One line equals one wine
Seems fine, unless you're greedy
A 10 pound wrap is usually crap
but does the job if you're seedy
