A VIDEO showing what the city's new £498m tram system will look like in operation has been unveiled by transport bosses today.
The video shows computer-generated images of the tram going along a number of city streets, including Princes Street, Leith Walk and Shandwick Place.

The release comes just ten days before the first major diversion work for the trams gets underway, with the inevitable extra congestion for drivers. View the video by clicking the link above.

An impressive video in my view.
Seven members of my staff live close to the line linking Ocean terminal with Edinburgh Airport. Six are looking forward to the convenience of trams. One is opposed and will, presumably, continue to accept traffic jams whilst she drives to work plus the reduction in her income for being persistently late in the morning.

16:9 format looks a bit squashed up in this video. Surely TIE canm organise correct encoding?

What a fantastic video, they way they've airbrushed out the 60 or 70 buses from Princess Street was particularly well done.

Thank you, TIE. That was very funny.

Next can we have a video of how traffic will look at Haymarket, the streets in the West End area, George Street, Queen Street, York Place, Picardy Place and Leith Walk (and its surrounding streets)? Could it include a running commentary on how travelling on these streets will also be cleaner, quicker and safer?

How much taxpayers money did that PR pap cost?

"Edinburgh Trams. Good because we say so without providing you with any evidence."

Calm, down, calm down.

At least they got one thing right. It was raining the whole time.

And, of course, there will be no traffic. Everyone will be abandoning their cars for the trams, which only goes along one route, and is no damn good to anyone who lives or works anywhere else.

Haha yes, where have all the buses and cars gone?.... Ah... Of course, they are all stuck in a massive traffic jam on Lothian road!

Yes excellent video- if the trams were indeed restricted to a wheels on part.
No 2 Loki- are you indeed doing this from work?
If your own company OK If not I'll clype and set the taxation dugs on yee

#3 I noticed the squashed view is very similar to the Caltongate PR video do you think the same company made it?

It has a sickly similar style full of what they want you to believe their horrible development will deliver but completely lacking in the reality of what is planned.

Where have all the cars and busses and taxis gone?
In some of the shots the speed the trams are going seems pretty scary, what happens when granny/child trips on the tracks when crossing the road - leave them or get squashed with them?

What! no buses on prince's Street? No room for them I expect. And no pedestrians in the middle island with trams whizzing past either side of them. Has anyone else noticed that it's the width of two paving slabs. Has health and safety seen this. Is this an attempt at population control? What a nightmare!

What about the congestion in Morrison Street and Easter Road? Go on TIE, show us what these streets will be like. Nose to tail traffic that has been forced up narrow congested streets with loadsa lights to the hinder movement.

Reduced commuter traffic? Yeah, right. And reduced street pollution - possibly in some streets, but what about the increased pollution and noise in some of the other streets. You forgot to mention that bit.

Wow, looks good.

Sooner the better.

Mad Moo - I think the problem lies with a poor understanding of the use of windows media encoder .. as they say RTFM..

Just thought of something. I has been said that the tram is not a replacement for the 22 bus. Okay, so if the tram isn't going to replace any of the bus routes, where are all the buses going to go?

Have you ever stood and watched the madness as buses snake between each other on Prince's Street. They can do this because there are two lanes either way. What happens when you reduce this down to one each way? Can they still pass each other, or will there be a long wall of buses moving slowly along Prince's Street? And how will this look on Leith Walk, where there is less room?

#5, Sarah - well said.

The video very conveniently does not show the MASSIVE congestion that will occur when trams are finally put onto the streets of Edinburgh.

#19 makes a very good point, and one which I feel which has simply not been taken into consideration whatsoever by the designers of this tram system.

Edinburgh does indeed have a world-class bus service, but it is this very service which is going to have a noose put around it's neck with the introduction of trams.

Just try and picture all the different bus numbers trying to negociate Leith Walk and Princess St with only one lane each way..

Chaos, complete chaos.

Great way to spend what will surely end up being at least £1 billion..

#2 - If I was that member of staff, I would resign and have you done for constructive dismissal.
16

No offence but.....,

Edinburgh 21/02/2008 20:14:36
You are all absolutely right. get rid of this lot now and ban traffic altogether from the town centre; it would solve the moaning about buses, trams, traffic jams, potential road kill etc....

But then, how would you all fit in the time to winge about your council then with all the walking you'd have to do.

Goat Boy 2

If you watch the video of trams going down Princes Street, the buses will be able to go over the tram lines to overtake.

As for pollution, if you inevitably move hundreds of buses off the streets when the trams take over, there will be less pollution overall; you can't deny that.

rathie,

I find this all very funny as I heard all the same arguments when the trams were being introduced in manchester. It's funny that once everyone saw how well they actually worked all the complainers suddenly decided that they thought the trams would be fantastic all along.

#21 AB_R. If the member of staff is constantly late then the employer can take action which would not provide grounds for constructive dismissal.

I particularly like the way the tram in Princes Street ploughs straight through the red light. If you look carefully you can see the green man on the lights. It will be fun if that is how they are going to operate - no wonder they have got a cow catcher on the front

Looks great, and its nice to see we still have a healthy smattering of tram pessimists out there!

4# - What's your point? There was quite a bit of air brushing in that video, becuase in case you hadn't noticed we don't have the tram yet!

5# - Why not go out and make the video yourself? The traffic is already like that, while your at it you could film the 70 buses that Judge was after - yes lets have the wonderful status quo for Edinburgh! (not!)

7 - So whats the point of the Edinburgh to North Berwick line, because thats no good to anyone who isnt going anywhere else or Edinburgh to Glasgow? or any of our Bus Services? Not much use of you have no need to be going on any parts or route! - You seem to make a slightly strange argument! but that said....

...it contradicts wonderfully number 20's gripe that this line to nowhere will put a 'noose' around the neck of a world class service!

If the sceptics were to visit Sheffield and use the trams there I think they might change their minds.
