THE owner of a tattoo parlour is celebrating after councillors made the "no-brainer" decision to keep him in business, against the wishes of the city's education leader.
Councillor Marilyne MacLaren had lodged a formal objection to a licence application by the Red Hot and Blue Tattoo studio, in Brougham Place, even though the shop has been there since 2005.

She raised concerns that pupils from Boroughmuir High and
St Thomas of Aquins High School "may be" walking past the premises on a daily basis.

Last week, councillors on the licensing sub-committee agreed to grant the shop's licence after being satisfied that it was operating properly and within the law.

The shop's owner Paul Slifer, 38, said: "We've got a result and I'm absolutely delighted.

"I believe (Cllr) MacLaren's objection was based on prejudice. There are professional, educated people working within the tattoo industry and it was her attitude I found objectionable.

"This has been a big time-waster for us and the committee as well.

"There were a lot of smirks coming from the councillors – it just looked like a no-brainer to them. It was a shame everyone got the run-around."

He added: "We've always practised to the very highest standards, so we feel like we've been a bit unfairly singled out."

The parlour was forced to apply for a licence under new rules brought in to monitor tattoo artists last year.

Cllr MacLaren said today: "If the committee has said it's reassured, then I have great faith in the committee."

Pupils "may be" walking past? What a pathetic objection. Cllr MacLaren should learn to prioritise and not waste everybodies time like this.

I find her objections all the more surprising as I've heard that she has a big dollar sign tattooed on her a$$.

What was she thinking with this waste of time. She should have "numpty" tatooed on her forehead

Pupils "may be" walking past? are we going to close down every pub in Edinburgh, what about the off licence's. What a waste of time and money. If there is one thing that should not be near schools it is chippy's.

#2 - most tattoo parlours won't tattoo your face, neck and hands. The one I used to go to didn't, but that's up to the tattooist themselves. Personaly, I wouldn't waste the ink on Ms MacLaren - body or newspaper!

What does Clr MM think goes on in these places? It's a perfectly legal business. Thank goodness sense prevailed.

No professional tattoo parlour will tattoo school kids anyway, so what if they "maybe" walk past? There's worse things they could see than a few tattoos.

I was once in the habit of walking past Ms MacLarens house. Should I now seek professional help?

Councillor MacLaren has shown by her ludicrous objection to this licence that she has failed utterly to grasp the relationship between fair trading practices and licensing requirements. Of course she no longer has her handy "experts" in the best places to keep her right and/or to provide official backing for her wishes by providing the correct slant on their reports.......mmmm?

'No brainer' is such a stupid American phrase, like 'teen', 'twentyfour-seven' etc. and should be banned from civilised societies

I think Miss McLaren was spot on. Should ban all these establishments from the tollcross area and open up more strip bars, the place just doesn't have enough!

Thank goodness common sense has prevailed!
Sadly this was after many peoples time and efforts were spent objecting to this ridiculous show of prejudice and ignorance. Shame on you Councillor Maclaren!. I hope your time and energy will be spent on more useful and productive pursuits in future, as all council tax payers would expect.

" ...she has a big dollar sign tattooed on her a$$."

That's not true. She has her initials tattooed on her behind. One "M" on each cheek. Or maybe it's "MoM?

2 - What a splendid idea!

I think it need to be broader mind you so ALL Cllr's and MSP's and MP's should have 'Numpty' and/or 'I am a waste of Taxpayers money' tattooed across their foreheads and ONLY when they made a truly positive contribution AND implemented a scheme to curb squandering in their area AND gone round every household in their community to apologise for years of waste, unnecessary red tape, obstruction in family life and curbing of our freedom - Then and only then they may have one letter per year (one letter every three years for 'Numpty') removed in the NHS's most filthy hospital which may motivate them to have a look at that problem too.

I think we should implement it straight away !

how pathetic. if these kids walk past it they might want a tattoo but they wont get one because they are under age. if they are 18 then why the goodness should they be stopped? they are old enough.

Count me in. You could add 'burger', 'chill', 'movie', 'cool' and 'Bob Dylan' as well.

Councillor MacLaren's puss will do more harm than a tattoo shop. And her ridiculous robes...

(Cllr) MacLaren, Education leader- the woman is a moron, if you walk past red hot there is nothing to see, the windows do not give you an open view of the inside of the shop.
