Secret group owns up to Leith graffiti

A SECRETIVE organisation has claimed responsibility for unusual graffiti which has cropped up in and around Leith recently.
Community leaders and residents had expressed concern at the scale of political slogans which were being plastered across white walls, businesses and billboards in the area.

Slogans such as "made in China" and "Americans out" have appeared in large lettering on Leith Walk and Easter Road, while businesses such as Tesco and Scottish Gas seem to be the target of other motifs and remarks.

Now a group calling itself the Safe Word Collective has claimed responsibility for the graffiti in an e-mail to the Evening News.

The e-mail stated: "Have you noticed how many items we buy these days that are made in China? The USA have bombed approximate 50 countries over as many years leaving none with a stable democracy.

"Excuse us for thinking, reflecting and challenging."

Are they the same ones that have given us such strange gems as "I gave you flowers but U wanted chocolates instead" on the wall beside the Central Bar at the bottom of the Walk ?

Maybe the Polis should trace the email account and bring those guilty to book, after all grafitti is vandalism.

....or are the Leith Police dismmissive...?

I think the graffiti which is mostly on advertising posters is much better than the advertising..... I haven't seen any graffiti in an anti-social position on shops or houses.... thank you "Safe Word Collective" for the thought provoking improvement.

I loved the job they did on the Nokia ads in Abbeyhill. Speaking about the new fangled camera improvements, the tag line on the ad was 'Something this precious should be saved'. Their 'graffiti' reply?
'Errrr, like the planet?'
