TWO major Orange parades are set to be held in Edinburgh in May and June this year.
The Scottish Orange Order's county grand lodge of the east juvenile and junior section has submitted a bid to hold a procession on Saturday, May 31.

Around 1500 youngsters, accompanied by 16 bands, will march on a circular route from the Meadows, taking in George IV Bridge, Princes Street and Lauriston Place. There will be traffic restrictions on the route from midday until 1.30pm.

Separately, the John Knox District Lodge number five has also applied to the council to host a parade on Saturday, June 28.

Around 420 people, including three bands, plan to assemble in Academy Street, Leith, at 8.45am, and march up Leith Walk to North Bridge, George IV Bridge, and the Grassmarket.

The participants will then board coaches taking them to a bigger parade in Grangemouth.

They will return to the Capital at 4.30pm, assembling in East Market Street, before marching towards Princes Street, Lothian Road and King's Stables Road.

Police chiefs have no objections to either event. Both applications are due to be considered by the city council this Friday.

Ban these bigoted demonstrations now!

mrmoneypenny,

They were banned in Northern Ireland, because of their bigoted songs and violence, now they are trying to branch out where ever the can, bunch of tramps.

I think theyre great, bands are brilliant and theres a good buzz about in the air when they walk. They have every right to walk if they wish
5

Watcher Man,

04/03/2008 12:19:29
these marches should be held exclusively in glasgow
6

the new yorker,

leith 04/03/2008 12:21:59
Every one should wear a hibs & celtic top, then we will see if that gets up there goat, i bet it will.

Shoot them i say, get rid of every bit of scum on this planet and lets start again.

Just watch this space, the taliban will be next to march through the streets of Edinburgh,

Ach, let them have their day in the sun. Once a year, the marchers and hangers-on think they're the bees knees.

It's a little chance for them to vent their hatred, show their intolerance to others and bash their little drums like a monkey in some freakish side show.

Little do they realise they're in the 21st century now. The world has moved on apart from the Taleban and the Orange Order. Those watching them as they parade through our streets will do so with incredulity, pity and concern.

Isn't Scotland great? The best small country in the world you say? I beg to differ!

Bless.

Now now people, calm down. Let's not forget our roots and how our ancient freedoms were once safe-guarded. It was no coincidence that reform of the Christian church ushered in democratic reforms in the state and our relationship with the Crown. Oh aye. Mind you, these marches can be errr a bit ugly.
John Knox District Lodge sounds good, mind. Wonder if they need a lute player?

4...Its not the 'walking' thats the problem it is their anti social behaviour that accompanies it...and their cronies... they only 'walk' to say 'we hate catholics'... face the truth...face the truth...
10

TankEngine,

Broxburn 04/03/2008 12:34:32
Why do grown men feel the need to bang their drums, play their flutes and march along the road wearing a sash? Don't see the point in these marches as they are not to raise awareness of anything, so they should be banned. They are just to provoke another religious belief.
11

Young Bob,

In your face Mofo.. 04/03/2008 12:47:41
FOR OBVIOUS REASONS WE DON'T LET NAZIS, RACISTS etc MARCH THROUGH THE CAPTIAL.

WHAT MAKES THESE BIGGOTS SO SPECIAL.

WAKE UP FOR GOD'S SAKE

IT'S 2008

Paul Voltaire,

I am surprised these walks still take place or that anyone can be bothered walking in them.
Any excuse for a bevvy I suppose.
13

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 13:09:58
I don't like banning things as a rule, but I'd ban Orange Walks for sure. Their only aim is to stir up hatred.

And let's ban the Orange Order too. It's a disgrace.

14

A Weegie,

The burgh 04/03/2008 13:17:34
And let's not forget their right to assault members of the public who dare to 'cross the march' - like my 6 month pregnant wife who was nearly pushed over by an orange feckwit for trying to cross the road in a large gap between bands on George IV bridge during last years march.

The amazing thing was, there were 2 mounted policemen right next to her, who just shrugged when she asked if they were going to let him away with pushing her like that.

I wonder if I had been there and given the ned a kicking for pushing my prengnant wife if they would have turned the other way.
15

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 13:36:37
The Orange Order, Lothian & Borders Police, the Freemasons - they're all much the same type of people. In fact, they're all much the same people!
16

Thomas the Tank,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 13:49:48
. .'They will return to the Capital at 4.30pm, assembling in East Market Street, before staggering towards Princes Street, Lothian Road and King's Stables Road' - The ones who are sober enough to stand, that is. They better get it all out of their orange-necked systems now, 'cos their daft antics won't be allowed to disrupt the Holy TramCars.
17

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 13:53:56
#6 I take umbrage to the fact that you have decided that everyone who supports Hibs is a catholic. How narrow-minded you are. I have a season ticket for Hibs and I am not a catholic.

Quite a lot of posts on here don't really seem to know what the Orange Order is all about. Don't comment on it if you don't know what you are talking about!!

Why can't all the ranters wanting to ban these walks "live and let live". I don't like seeing Gay/Lesbian marches and all their nonsense being pushed in my face but I put up with it because I live in a democracy. Get over it!!!
18

mrmoneypenny,

04/03/2008 14:07:03
18 So your a loyalist then? There is a difference between gay marches and bigot marches.
19

Buggalugs,

On ma Uppers 04/03/2008 14:10:02
Oh dear. What a buch of numpties.....why cant they march in their own back-woods shanty towns and leave us alone.
Mind you, if I had an off-licence, I'd be stocking up with Buckie and White Lightening, their marching fuel of choice.

Losers.
20

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 14:14:53
#19 Again, you are casting aspersions. Where did I say in my post that I do not have a problem with Orange marches? I only stated that people shouldn't make assumptions about the Orange Order if all they "think" they know about it is that they are Catholic haters.
21

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 14:16:57
#19 And you have also decided in your wisdom that i must be a protestant because I stated that i wasn't a catholic - how wrong you are, you narrow minded person!!
22

Al Berkid,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 14:18:38
#18 - I am no catholic either but have no wish to have those clowns parading on Edinburgh streets - same goes for James Connolly. Can see a few pubs emptying as they come up Leith Walk.
23

Hector the Red,

04/03/2008 14:27:32
No one has metioned the smaller but equally offensive James Connely march that takes place every year........surely if we are banning all religious based marches then this should go as well.....!

And just why do we have religiously segregated schools anyway?

Scotland is a land of bigots and full of racial hatred.....get used to it, from the comments above it's clearly not going to change!
24

mig,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 14:34:58
#26 - why not have religiously segregated schools? Why is only Scotland that seems to have a problem with it? Is there a wide scale perception of intolerance towards minorities in this country or is it just me?
25

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 14:38:53
#25 - How long have you got?

#26 - excuse my ignorance but are there any 'protestant only' schools in scotland?
26

mig,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 14:41:08
# 30. No there probably aren't. But there aren't any RC-only schools either if you check your facts. Do you have a chip on your shoulder about something?
27

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 14:45:04
#31 - No chip on my shoulder (apart from being called a loyalist!)
It would be interesting to know approximately how many non-RC children attend RC schools, don't think it will be very many.
28

mig,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 14:47:10
#32. I don't know the stats but it's not uncommon. What's the problem with being educated within a religious framework? Is it just the catholic thing?
29

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 14:56:47
#33. Sorry - don't have the time.

#34. I doubt that very much.
30

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 14:58:15
> Why can't all the ranters wanting to ban these walks "live and let live". I don't like seeing Gay/Lesbian marches and all their nonsense being pushed in my face but I put up with it because I live in a democracy. Get over it!!! <

Erm.... do Gay/Lesbian marchers want to beat up and humiliate straights, gerrymander them out of votes, deprive them of jobs and public housing, and keep them permanently subjugated as second-class citizens?
31

mig,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 15:06:47
#35 It is indeed not uncommon. You didn't answer my other question - is it just the catholic thing?
32

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 15:14:44
#36. "Erm.... do Gay/Lesbian marchers want to beat up and humiliate straights, gerrymander them out of votes, deprive them of jobs and public housing, and keep them permanently subjugated as second-class citizens?"

They probably would if they got the chance!
33

mig,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 15:16:11
#38 Your true colours are shining through! Well done!
34

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 15:16:25
#37 "is it just the catholic thing?

I don't believe any schools should be religious - end of!
35

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 15:18:49
#38, > They probably would if they got the chance! <

Whereas with the Orange Order and the RCs we KNOW they did when they HAD the chance!
36

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 15:20:27
#39. Now I'm a loyalist gay basher - excellent!! Anyone else want to join in?
37

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 15:21:23
#42, I'd assumed that all loyalists were gay-bashers anyway. It's all part of the same mindset, surely?
38

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 15:29:24
#43. LOL - you are funny, aren't you?
39

mig,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 15:36:51
#44 - I don't think he was being funny. It's probably true. A fear and intolerance towards minorities (of any flavour) manifests itself in all sorts of prejudices.
40

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 15:37:43
#44, I don't find the LOL at all funny. I'm surprised it's still allowed to exist. Other organisations founded solely to hate and oppress other groups in society have been banned - the Ku Klux Klan, for instance. Nobody in elected authority in Scotland would dream of allowing a uniformed body to be established the sole aim of which was to hate and oppress English people, for instance, or atheists, or Muslims, or people of Chinese origin.

So why is the Orange Order, which exists solely to hate and oppress Roman Catholics, allowed to survive?

Time to ban it for good and all. It's a blot on Scotland.

41

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 15:50:36
#44. "So why is the Orange Order, which exists solely to hate and oppress Roman Catholics, allowed to survive?".

Again, I re-iterate about people blah blah blahing about things they know very little about. The Orange Order exists solely to hate and opress Roman Catholics? What a sad person you are if you think this - and a bigot to boot!

42

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 15:53:16
#48, no, it's the Orange Order that's sad - a bitter and twisted body that lives only to hate others and to fight again, again and yet again the battles of three centuries ago. It's a disgrace to Scotland and an affront to humanity. Time to ban it.
43

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 15:55:41
#48, and by the way, what's the difference between the Orange Order and the BNP?

The BNP has a wider range of policies!
44

mig,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 16:08:00
#52 - I think most people do too. If these purple-faced simpletons full of rage and bitter about their own multiple inadequacies want to flaunt themselves in public, then so be it. Watching them will be cheaper than going to the zoo.
45

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 16:12:51
#53. God love you!

But will that be a catholic god or a protestant god..............................
46

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 16:15:34
#54, only an Orangeman would believe that there are tribal Gods. Other Christians believe that they all worship the same God.
47

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 04/03/2008 16:19:02
#54, so the Orange Order believes in a tribal God?

I thought that all Christians worshipped the same God.
48

ArabHibbee,

04/03/2008 16:47:31
#54 - Another one to add to the list - a loyalist gaybashing orangeman - lovely!!

And what will you spout when I say "C'mon the Barcelona"?
49

Doreen,

The Cyber Shebeen 04/03/2008 17:15:44
14...That is because the police are given orders not to arrest unless it is absolutely neccessary...in the interests of public order....pity you had not filed a complaint of assault and a complaint against the police for neglect of duty while you were at it...I too have seen these 'humans' aim a kick at a 6 year old boy who innocently tried to cross the road at the green man, during a break in their parade...they have a rule that no one crosses the parade whilst they are marching....which is why some of these lesser intelligent specimens will try to assault a pregnant woman or a child....

I remember last year when a group of them jumped of a coach at the meadows, then went out in search of an off license (and that was at 11-00am !).

It was so funny when one of their group spotted a 'Haddows' sign up Marchmont, imagine the disappointment when they found it was some sort of up market delicatessent.

I think they eventually got tanked up thanks to a wee corner shop, whose entire alchol stock was cleared out by the visitors from the west coast !

As a council tax payer i object to having my week-end disrupted by these bigots and then have to pay for the policing. The SNP keep telling us that this is a new Scotland - so lets see the SNP council put their money where their mouth is and ban these marches and also the James Connolley one too.
54

onlooker123,

05/03/2008 10:14:17
flip me, scotland seems more sectarian than northern ireland to me at the minute (trust me im from northern ireland),
the orange order is an old and grand group of people, and a few dumdasses don't count for a whole, (and that counts for people on both 'sides' of this debate

and by the way the next dumdc*ock who thinks its smart to ask me what football team i support on hearing my accent is getting a slap

2008 yeah right
55

Bob 2,

05/03/2008 13:03:38
its time these marches were stopped..

Anyway once the trams are up and running, marches along Princes Street will be a thing of the past.!
56

Urban Guerrilla,

Edinburgh 05/03/2008 15:59:30
#65, this is the first convincing argument I've ever heard in favour of the trams!
