THE notorious Seafield stench is more of a concern to people living in Leith than high levels of drinking and vandalism, a survey has revealed.
The study found that 119 people registered the issue of smell from the nearby waste treatment plant as something that concerned them.

This was significantly more than issues such as alcohol-related violence, vandalism, housing and litter, and pros
titution.

Leith Central Community Council conducted the survey at the recent Leith Festival, giving residents three stickers to put on areas of concern.

Only the lack of facilities for young people caused more concern than the sewage smell, which often lingers over the area and has been a contentious issue for residents for years.

Several local politicians have long campaigned for a solution to the problem, including Leith councillor Gordon Munro, who described the smell as "very regularly pungent".

Stewart Blaik, chairman of Leith Central Community Council, said: "It was something that registered very highly indeed, although it should be said it's not something that affects us up here in Leith Central as much as Leith Links.

"I believe efforts are being made to resolve it and it's not something the authorities take lightly. It is certainly something that if you are in the area you can smell it, and for the residents there that must be an issue."

It's now over 70 years ago that I was born in Leith and the stink from Seafield existed then. Very few locals would dare go into the sea at Portobello, it was always said that you'd be going through the motions. However, it's disgusting that nothing has ever been done to prevent the nauseating pong. It's hardly as if it's a recent happening.

People have been complaining for YEARS about the Seafield stench ... and the Council has done NOTHING!

Perhaps with the money, the present bunch in the Chambers are saving, they can use it to solve this ongoing problem?

I used to work as a PFI lawyer and frequently worked on sewage plant deals; apparently when Seafield was upgraded they decided that a roof to contain the smell was too expensive which is pretty bad when you consider that it was common knowledge amongst everyone involved in such transactions that Seafield is the most outdated sewage plant in Europe! We should have dealt with this problem ages ago; it is really bad and not funny for the people that live there and unbelievable for the people who come to visit our great city!

Something to be proud of!

Come to the most outdated sewage plant in Europe! They don't make 'em like this anymore, kids! Smell that putrid air! Retch into your coat pocket! Fun for all the family.

"Notorious stench Leithers' biggest stink" - have you given up writing headlines in English?

When I lived in Leith for many years the smell of toasted jobbies used to be in the air quite a lot. It was ****ing disgusting.

simple solution - run an extraction fan pipe from the plant and pump it into the parliament and city chambers - wander how long the stench would stay then? - it could also be rotated around other suitable parts of the city like the new town, morningside etc so they could get a taste (sic) of what it's like
24

I love to eat Sellotape,

It's not a simple solution. Think of the cost of such a long "extraction fan pipe". Also, it would probably inconvenience high-sided vehicles or low-flying aircraft. It would be expensive to maintain, and attract terrorist. No sir, it's not a simple solution at all.

I used to live down in the Leith Links area in the mid-1960s - the Seafield smell was a big Evening News topic back then. I'm glad to see that the wheels are not turning too slowly in finding a solution to this problem. Perhaps my grandson will pick up the Evening News in his eventide home to see the headline 'Seafield Smell now resolved'.

A Cleaner Fresher Environment at Seafield?

One week after the Sludge Management Plan was outlined by Scottish Water the owners of Seafield WWTW have announced that it is to mothball the Sludge Thermal Drying Facility this summer for the foreseeable future, in a cost cutting exercise.

Under current procedures, sludge cake is treated and volume reduced, pelletized and stored in a contained environment with odour control. The closure of the Sludge Thermal Drying Facility will result in 100% of sludge cake deposited and stored on an open cake pad (estimated 150 – 250 tonnes of sludge cake per day).

With the increased sludge cake storage on the cake pad, odour levels are set to rise considerably around Leith this summer.
