A CIRCUS performance at the Edinburgh Mela was cancelled last night after technical problems with equipment used by acrobats.
The show, put on by performance group UpSwing, includes complicated aerial moves, and organisers said they could not be sure the equipment was up to the job, but they hoped to be on stage for their show tonight.

A spokesman said: "Aerial work is extremely complex and difficult. There was an equipment problem on Friday that we were not able to resolve, but we fully expect to resolve it."

Ticket holders for last night's show can get a full refund from the ticket office or will be allowed into tonight's show, taking a free guest with them. The festival in Leith runs until tomorrow.

The Mela has been a disaster this year. What was up with the place only being half built on Friday, Wasn't it meant to be up and running all week?

I hope their grants get retracted or at least cancelled next year, this shoddy performance is not acceptable.

(And No, I'm not being racist or anything like that, I just hate seeing public money being squandered by any groups who fail to perform.)

Scary Biscuits,

I thought Edinburgh Mela excelled themselves this year. Yes, there may have been teething problems with the site, but the programme showed an organisation which is ambitious and determined to showcase exciting examples of music, dance and culture from all round the world. The atmosphere was laidback and friendly - and with prices only the most churlish could complain about.

For a site fee of £2/day I saw African musicians and dancers who worked their socks off to keep the audience dancing for 4 hours, the 30+ member London Gospel Choir (wow!), top UK Asian pop singers, fantastic wild fiddles from a Balkan gypsy group, mesmerising Indian dance, Chinese musicians and dancers, local samba drummers and a Pakistani Pipe Band. And I know I missed a lot more! Not to mention the food and the great array of stalls.

Can't think of a better use for public money!

Shame about the weather but there's some things you just can't control.
