Football cup is dedicated to Capital priest

FOOTBALLERS taking part in a tournament in the Capital have dedicated their trophy to a city priest who died after watching Celtic play Barcelona.

Monsignor David Gemmell died suddenly after watching the Glasgow club take on the Catalan giants in March.

Now players competing in the Edinburgh Diversity Cup this weekend will play for a trophy named in his honour.

The annual five-a-side tournament, sponsored by the Edinburgh Inter-Faith Association, aims to bring together people from different backgrounds through a shared love of football.

Twenty teams will compete throughout Saturday and all the proceeds will go towards a project in partnership with the charity Habitat for Humanity, which will take a multicultural group from Edinburgh to build new homes for families in need in Malawi.
