AN Edinburgh scientist has scooped a major international award which comes with £67,000 of funding to help with his groundbreaking research into predicting volcanic eruptions.
Dr Andrew McGonigle was named a Laureate of the 2008 Rolex Awards for Enterprise. The awards support pioneering work in science and medicine, technology and innovation.
Dr McGonigle, 35, is developing a new way of safely and reliably predicting volcanic eruptions weeks, even months, in advance, potentially saving the lives of millions of people who live near volcanoes.
The funds from the award will finance AEROVOLC II, an unmanned, small-scale helicopter, designed specifically to measure the volcanic gases in Etna and Stromboli in Italy.
Dr McGonigle grew up in Edinburgh and is now senior research fellow at the University of Sheffield's Department of Geography.
He will be honoured this evening in a ceremony in Dubai.
