Hibs swoop for Dunfermline defender Sol Bamba

Hibernian today swooped to snap up Souleymane "Sol" Bamba on a three year contract, paying Dunfermline £75,000 for the Ivory Coast international.
The 23-year-old, a 6ft 3in central defender had been poised to join English League One outfit Watford but the deal fell through.

Bamba joined the Pars from French club Paris St Germain two years ago, making more than 50 first team appearances for the East End Park club.

He's recently returned from the Olympics where he played in two matches for the Ivory Coast, including a Quarter Final appearance against beaten finalists Nigeria.

It's understood Dunfermline had also agreed a fee with SPL rivals Motherwell for Bamba but the player opted for the move to Edinburgh.

Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen said: "I am delighted to be adding Sol to the squad. He is a player with tremendous pace and physical presence that will most definitely help bolster our defence.

"Sol has been a target for a number of clubs during this transfer window and I'm delighted that given the options open to him he has chosen to join Hibernian."

He is typical big African type. Raw boned, strong, enthusiastic and good in the air. Is also quite fast. His downfall so far is that he dives into the tackle too much and can be left behind that way if the forward evades the tackle. He is good in the opposition's penalty box at corners and free kicks. Not a bad addition to the squad. Central defender ho can also play at right back.

He was born in France of Cote D'Ivoire parents and joined the Paris St Germaine youth academy at the age of 14. He was released at the age of 20 in 2005 and after trials at Kilmarnock and Dunfermline joined Dunfermline on a 6 month deal. He was later given a further 2 year contract. Had a good season the year Dunfermline were relegated and has been trying to get away since.

I hope Brian Kerr can go on and show that he is a better player than the ineffectual one that Hibs supporters saw. He was given many games by Collins and Paatelainen but failed to do much in most of them. He spent a lot of time being where the ball was not.

Surprised he binned canning. I thought he played pretty well on saturday. Did quite like big Bamba as a player when I've seen him. heard a lot of folk calling him 'bombscare' though, no sure where this is coming from, always looked the type we've been missing. In the Balde mould, takes no mince from no one and not scared to put someone up in the air. Welcome aboard.

It should be bombscare Hogg that has his contract terminated, he cant header the ball without it going straight up in the air, and the distribution from him is "Kerr" like, how many deflections does this guy score and very easily knocked off the ball.

Canning was apparently wanted by Hamilton who have given him a first team spot whereas at Hibs he is in the reserve category. I think he is a better all round player than Hogg, especially as he is about 6ft 2'' and good in the air as well as being quite mobile. Obviously La Bamba signed as his replacement.

Great news about Riordan and I'm hopeful about Bamba. We know all about what Riordan can do, but Bamba is a bit more of a gamble. Any time I've seen him, he's impressed with his enthusiasm, but can also be a bit "casual" on the ball - a bit like Caldwell in that respect, and I feel we've got enough defenders who think they're Beckenbauer. But, I also think there's a good centre in there and he's young enough to develop. As for Canning going, I'm sorry about that as he was about the only defender we had who was prepared to clear the ball when it was necessary. You were always guaranteed a solid performance from him at least.

Still, it's not all doom and gloom and if we could get the defence to actually talk to each other during a game and stop fannying about at the wrong times then we'll be ok.

Hibs have announced the return of prodigal son, Derek Riordan, to Easter Road.

The 25 year old returns two years after leaving for Celtic Park where he was forced to sit either in the stand or on the bench after a falling out with Gordon Strachan.

Riordan, a natural goalscorer, will be delighted at his return to the Capital as he seeks to resurrect a flagging career after his wasted spell at the Celts where even describing him as a bit part player would be extreme.

The deal to bring him back will cost Hibs around £250,000 with his wages said to be around the £6k a week mark.

He has signed on a 3 year contract and Celtic have insisted on applying a sell on clause.

Hibs supporters everywhere will be delighted at the return of one of their own and Deeks will aim to make his debut against Dundee Utd on Saturday week.

City rivals Hearts were also interested in the striker who turned down the chance to move to Burnley in the summer but a move to Tynecastle for the die-hard Hibby was undoubtedly out of the question.

Hearts were quoted as pulling out of the race to sign the striker after he showed little enthusiasm about completing a move to Gorgie.

Deeks told the official Hibs website 'I`m absolutely delighted to be back. It`ll be great to work with Mixu again to help get Hibs back up the table.'

Paatelainen was also over the moon at securing the deal and added 'Derek is a tremendous talent, and his goal-scoring record speaks for itself. He will bring even more competition up front, and that is an area that I was keen to strengthen. We have certainly achieved that with this signing.'

Riordan scored 54 goals in 123 SPL appearances for Hibs prior to his move west and a return to this kind of form in his second stint at the club will more than see his hero status re-instated.

Bamba - the man responsable for us going out in the semis 2 years ago hope that type of performance continues. Riordan - been there done that hope your back to do it all again. Kerr - didnt work out for him but good luck for the future and thanks for THAT goal.Canning - little surprised about his release lacked pace but good honest pro,did a great job for us last season at right back as well as centre half.
