HIBS' already faint hopes of Europe evaporated as Dundee United turned up the heat on the third-placed Edinburgh side with a 2-1 win at Easter Road.
But the match ended in controversy as referee Stevie O'Reilly showed Hibs defender Chris Hogg a straight red card for what appeared to be no more than a run of the mill challenge on United winger Craig Conway five minutes from time.

Hibs star David van Zanten had taken a boot in the face from Conway just seconds earlier and was still receiving treatment when David Goodwillie scored United's second.

Wayne Feeney had earlier put United ahead, his goal cancelled out by Steven Fletcher with the game looking to be heading for a draw until those controversial final few minutes with Hibs now facing Thursday's derby without Hogg who will join skipper Rob Jones, Sol Bamba and Colin Nish on the sidelines through suspension.

Already without Jones, Bamba and NIsh, there was a further surprise for Hibs fans with the return in goal of Yves Ma-Kalambay, the Belgian Under-21 internationalist replacing former United star Grzegorz Szamoltulski who, presumably, was injured.

A terrific ball from Derek Riordan into the path of Denes Rosa carved out the game's first opening but the little midfielder drilled a low shot wide of the target rather than test Lukasz Zaluska.

There was a double let-off for Hibs in the 12th minute as Darren Dods got his head to Danny Swanson's corner only to see his effort crash back off the bar, falling kindly for Danny Grainer who nodded it back in forcing Lewis Stevenson to clear off his own line.

The Edinburgh club hit back, however, Riordan playing in Fletcher who fired a low cross to Jonatan Johansson. The Finn held off Dods but Zaluska got down well to his right to push the ball away.

But United made their aerial power pay in the 27th minute as former Hibs defender Dods got his head to Grainger's cross, guiding the ball down for Feeney to blast home from six yards.

Hibs were level, though, after 39 minutes, John Rankin's clever flick giving Johansson the space to deliver a low cross which Fletcher bundled over the line from only a yard out for his 11th goal of the season.

A cruel deflection off Chris Hogg as he attempted to block a shot from Prince Buaben almost undid all that good work, however, Ma-Kalambay wrong-footed as the ball dropped agonisingly wide of his right hand post.

United went close again in the 65th minute as Edinburgh-born Danny Swanson cut the ball back for defender Garry Kenneth to dispatch a first-time shot which saw Ma-Kalambay use every inch of his 6ft 5in frame to push the ball to safety.

Ma-Kalambay was called into action again, beating away a powerful shot from United substitute Craig Conway and quickly composing himself to gather Feeney's effort from the rebound.

Hibs were controversially reduced to ten men five minutes from time when Chris Hogg was sent off after sliding in on Conway, the Easter Road defender bemused by the decision of referee Stevie O'Reilly, even United boss Craig Levein tacitly admitting he'd been harshly treated by shaking his hand as he disconsolately trudged towards the tunnel.

David van Zanten had taken a boot in the face in a challenge on Conway just seconds earlier and was stll receiving treatment four minutes later when David Goordwillie shrugged off Ian Murray before slotting home the winner.

Hibs: Ma-Kalambay, Van Zanten McCormack 89), Hogg, Thicot, Stevenson, Rankin, Rosa (O'Brien 62), Murray, Riordan, Johansson, Fletcher. Subs not used: McNeil, Keenan, Hanlon, Chisholm, Cropley.

Dundee United: Zaluska, Caddis, Kenneth, Dods, Grainger, D Robertson, Wesolowski (Gomis 25), Buaben, Swanson(Conway 77), Feeney, Shala (Goodwillie 58). Subs not used: McGovern, Dillon, S Robertson, Kovacevic..

Referee: Stevie O'Reilly.

I'm sure he can spell right though.

Bye bye Mixu, inept management he has no fkn idea about tactics.

The result does put DUFC closer to the lesser side from Edinburgh though.

I did think that Mixu had a master plan in place, and it would eventually work, and no doubt, so did he.

But he didn't, and it hasn't.

Next year, without Fletcher, Hogg, Zsamoltulski and Jones, it'll maybe work.

I find it sad that the Scotsman Moderators decided to pull the thread on the OF going down south.

The comments were actually more than valid and surely it's healthy to hear the various reasons why the OF would succeed or fail down south.

One of the main arguments would be the fans behaviour down south - most EPL clubs wouldn't want trouble and RFC's last trip to England proved to be a lot of trouble for the authorities.

So Scotsman Moderator, may I ask - if you put threads up to be discussed and valid comments come to the fore even if they are true but unpleasant, please can the discussion continue - otherwise what's the point of even running the thread to begin with?

The media can twist the truth and do often, but the beauty of the threads is that they at least give balance to what the public think. Good or bad - unless it is highly offensive (ie profane etc) then please continue the thread - otherwise all those thoughts, feelings, expressions stay bottled up and the wider public don't hear or see their valid and honest (on this occasion) views.

#15,

Great post. To prevent discussion is shocking as the EEN have the right and the duty to remove racist, xenophobic, sectarian etc. comments from the forum. BUT, people deserve the right to voice their views otherwise it's censorship.

Btw, no Hibs in europe.

Same again eh?

Pathetic.

Congratulations to the Hibs board for totally ignoring the punters.

End of message. Totally deflated now.

Thanks

My beef with this one was quite simple, the comments were related to the article for a change.

So it wasn't OF fans hi-jacking a Hamilton Accies v Falkirk thread - no this was a thread about the OF going to the EPL and comparing the pros and cons with input from WS and Tony Mowbray.

I never saw too many comments on that thread that were out of order, yes there was banter, yes there was references to incidents etc...but not near enough unsuitable comments to justify pulling the plug on it.

So what will no doubt happen, will be the hi-jacking of the non OF threads and the discussion will start there - then when it gets too hot for the mod he/she'll pull that one - then the non OF fans will suffer because they have no thread.

It really is a very silly, unworkable system they run. I hope the mods are taking a long hard look at what they are trying to achieve and the futility of trying to achieve it.

Hibs fans:

What I can't get, is why they sold Dean Shiels and Ivan Sproule for peanuts. For the life of me I could never understand those decisions.

Why should his name get him banned?

Also from what I read most of it was footie related - the people who follow the OF are every bit as important as the players on the park and owners when it comes moving leagues. Don't you think?

In retrospect, I'm glad that the rangers game is the second post split and not the first.

Celtic were way off the pace in the first half...could it be that we lost a bit of match fitness and that explains why we took a while to get into our stride ? Had we gone to ibrox and played like that in today's first half, we could've faired a good deal worse than 1v1 going into the break.
So I'm glad we got the chance to blow away the cobwebs before our trip over to Govan. We looked far better in the second half, controlled the game and answered any defensive questions Aberdeen posed.

It was vital that we got the three points today, but in addition, it is very encouraging that we finished so strongly. C'mon the jambo lambos.

BTW

On clyde this afternoon that a rumour is circulating that murray has found a buyer for the threadberz.
Apparently Graeme Souness is part of a consortium that hope to take the whole sorry mess off of minty's hands.

Interesting

Not sure Souness would want to be part of it though. He despised the bigotry that went with RFC, he also was never really liked at RFC. I am sure Souness would have bigger fish to fry.

22

Agreed this fixture list (or rearrangers list) might just turn out in Celtic's favour.

Second half thought Naka was amazing at times in his simplicity at keeping the ball.

McD also turned up the heat, but JVoH has to go - the guy is hopeless.

How sad you appear to be posting about Rangers more than the team who are delighted to be in the top six.

I'm sure you'll be just as excited when you listen to us "giving" your lot a mention as we're playing in the Europa games ;o)
