A glorious double from Colin Nish, his first goals in four months, wasn't enough to earn Hibs a win at Tannadice as Mixu Paatelainen's players threw away an early two goal lead and were forced to settle for a draw with Dundee United.
Nish struck with a tremendous 25 yard drive after just six minutes and then coolly slotted the ball beyond United goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska four minutes later.

Hibs goalkeeper Grzegorz Szamotulski brilliantly stopped a Craig Conway penalty to maintain his side's two goal lead but the Edinburgh side hand to endure a tense, nervous finale after Garry Kenneth handed the Tayside outfit a lifeline wih a 53rd minute header.

And two minutes into added time United made their pressure pay as substitute David Goodwillie poked the ball home from two yards after a Paul Dixon corner had caused mayhem in the Hibs penalty area.

United were dealt a major blow barely three minutes into the match as Jon Daly went down under a hard but entirely fair tackle from Chris Hogg, referee Eddie Smith immediately halting play as a stretcher was called for the Tannadice striker.

Hibs were celebrating thee minutes later, though, as Daly's replacement Warren Feeney lost possession to John Rankin who switched the ball to Nish. The big striker looked up and thundered home a tremendous shot from 25 yards which left United goalkeeper Zaluska helpless.

It was Nish's first goal since the beginning of December and he didn't have long to wait for another. Sol Bamba's throw-in induced a period of head tennis inside the home side's penalty area but in attempting to end it by nodding the ball back to his goalkeeper Prince Buaben's effort struck team-mate Lee Wilkie and fell for Nish who showed terrific composure to pick his spot.

Incredibly, Nish could have had a third in the 16th minute, Denes Rosa cleverly working his way to the bye-line before picking his team-mate out at the back post. Nish hit his shot down into the ground and it appeared to be rearing into the net before Zaluska spectacularly turned it away.

Nish headed wide before delivering an inviting low cross for Steven Fletcher who should have done better than push the ball wide as he slid in.

United almost made Hibs pay for that miss as Chris Hogg was adjudged to have held down Feeney as the pair jostled for a Craig Conway cross, referee Smith having no hesitation in pointing to the spot. But former Tannadice goalkeeper Szamotulski defied Conway, guessing correctly as he threw himself to his right to brilliantly push away his effort from 12 yards.

The Tayside club restarted after the interval on the front foot, Wilkie driving wide after being picked out by Conway before Kenneth claimed a goal back, rising to head home Paul Dixon's cross from the right in the 53rd minute. It was the first goal lost in five matches by Hibs.

Hibs found themselves under the cosh as Craig Levein's outfit sought an equaliser, Szamotulski watching a Buaben shot all the way before pushing the ball round the post. United sensed there was another goal at least in it for them and Kenneth went close with a diving header, the Easter Road side not helping themselves by conceding too many needless free-kicks which allowed their opponents to throw the ball into the box as they attempted to take advantage of their height.

United certainly looked much more assured than they had during that first half, their dominance silencing the travelling support who were beginning to regret those earlier misses from Nish and Fletcher.

The home side kept pushing Francisco Sandaza forcing Szamotulski to push a low shot round the post before the Hibs goalkeeper was again in action, clawing away a Wilkie header from under his cross bar as Hibs desperately tried to hold on for three precious points.

But that hope evaporated with that late, late Goodwillie strike and even a point almost disappeared as Wilkie was only inches away with an even later header.

Dundee United: Zaluska, Dillon, Wilkie, Kenneth, Dixon, Buaben, Wesolowski (Swanson 55), Gomis, Conway, Daly (Feeney 3 (Goodwillie 80)), Sandaza. Subs not used: McGovern, Caddis, D Robertson, Swanson.

Hibs impressed early doors,
then as usual tossed it away,
Nish should have had four,
o'brian has to go, rankin also a waste of space,
feel Riordan needs a kick up backside, and dropped for a couple of games, very impressive first 45.....

And he drove the fastest milkcart in the east.

#1 Rankin was one of our best players today.

Brilliant first half hour and had great chances for 4 or five goals.

Last hour Dundee United totally dominant and fully deserved their draw. Dissapointed Mixu didn't try and change things in the second half as we couldn't get out of our half.

Hey Benny,

Hobos were two up after 10 minutes and just managed to scrape a draw.

Hearts came from 1 - 0 down to win 3 - 1 and missed a penalty.

We'll worry about keeping third place. You'ld be better off worrying if the Hobos will make the top six?

What is a 'big' club?

Hibs have 5th biggest attendance this year behind Hearts and Aberdeen. Hibs also in 6th place and have not won a major trophy in... how long?

Despite early domination Hibs capitulated. Riordain is a lazy git!

With Riordan now neither midfield player or stiker, its still not working to play with a 2 man midfield and constantly surrender possession to the opposition. Eventually they will use that possession positively as Dundee Utd did today. Its fine to play Riordan on the left, its his best position, but having a fast but ineffectual winger on the other side is not working. Two goals from 4 games before today illustrates the point. Rankin and Rosa are working hard in the centre of midfield but another hard, but creative player is needed there instead of playing O'Brien on the right. I would play Rosa on the right side of midfield doing what he does now but also breaking forward up the right.

And to finish, please Mixu stop playing Bamba at right full back. Ian Murray would fill in there till McCann is back to full fitness better than Bamba or van Zanten.

What's the obsession with crowd numbers all about? Hibernian are a well run club that lives within it's means.

To correct one of radge dug's points. Hibs have won a major trophy more recently than Hearts. Despite the game being on TV there were more than 40,000 Hibs fans there as they defeated Kilmarnock 5 - 1.

Just like the 100,000 'glory hunters' who descended on Manchester and shamed Scotland yet again.

11. Calling a hibs fan a glory hunter is somewhat an oxymoron is it not!
Ps. 10. That was the CIS cup, hardly a major trophy is it!

#13 Smithy,,

The CIS Cup is one of the 2 cup trophies that ALL Scottish senior teams play in and are trying to win. The final is played at Hampden, the national stadium.

So, as such, it is a major trophy. Indisputable fact!

14. Nah, you cant get in to europe by it plus you only have to play about 3 games to be in the final! Hence the term diddy cup. Not saying its not an achievement(at a stretch), merely pointing out that major it aint!

Yam Buster,

04/04/2009 19:14:27
#15 That will be why your official site shows you winning it 4 times along with all the other "diddy" honours. If its not that important surely a club of your stature and magnitude would not need to show it along with all the other honours such as Texaco Cup Finalists in 1970-71(swoon), Scottish league east and north runners up 1939-40(faint) or Scottish Southern League cup finalists 1940-41(gulp). Now they ARE major honours.

17. League title and scottish cup, only MAJOR honours in scottish football. Rest just minor honours. Must admit your post was funny though!

Hearts win and no thread on the match report again still great result today and could have been 6 or 7 on another but we are playing very well. Elliot should have had 5 to himself thought Bruno could have let him take the penalty.
Would love the smelly weegies to lose to Falkirk and the famous Maroon to beat the other smelly weegies next week, make the run in very interesting if they do shed any more points hopefuly and Hearts can pounce on them. Far off but still very reachable on current form and how good would it be for them to throw away such a big lead and another financial windfall from Champions league revenue. Quality entertainment but thanks to the hobos for helping Utd shed two points, a good day for the Jamtarts!

Would have thought a Hibs win would have suited Hearts better, just shows the mentallity of it all really... Two poor teams in an equally poor league... Can't find much to brag about I'm afraid...

Rankin had a decent game on saturday covered alot more ground than Obrien and Riordan put together, both there cover of the full backs was rank rotten,

As usual everyone seen we were toiling soon as the 2nd half rolled out but the fat fin waits till we loose goals before changing always reaction subs he is incapable of changing a game prior.

Obriend was woeful, useless touch, useless passer, useless workrate and his major strength the pace is pointless when you travel with teh ball 15 yards in front of you. Bamba is NOT a right back nor will he ever be STOP playing him there he's a player short in that posistion and your making him look brutal.

Obrien shoulda been hooked long b4 he did for murray but slow subs and out of posistion players cost us what should've been a 4-0+ win. So many chances wasted week after week.
