THE University of Edinburgh is hosting a series of debates to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Treaty of the Union.
Next year will mark 300 years since the Anglo-Scottish Union, which created Great Britain and dissolved both Scotland's and England's parliaments and replaced them with a British one.

The university is holding four talks which will look at the origins of the treaty, the consequences of Anglo-Scottish relations, nationalism and devolution and the state of the union today.

The talks begin on Wednesday, January 10.

You can stick your celebration where the sun don't shine. I'll be wearing a black arm band, hoping for its imminent demise and the return of independence!

Hear Hear Jamie, well said.

A lot of people this side of the border now too want independence. I like the idea of the black arm band, excellent.

Cry Freedom for England!! (And Scotland and Wales and NI Of course!!)

The Union is an important part of both countries history and the foundation of our democracy and the enlightenment. It should be a UK wide celebation, it was what made Britain great. The quality of the other comments here suggest that Scottish education is not what it was or that devolution has done little to reduce the size of the chip on people's shoulder. I guess if Scotland became independent they would still blame the English for their failures!

I will not be celebrating.

The state of the union = hopeless.

I think this calls for a student uprising. Anyone coming?

The 1707 act of union created Great Britain eh? There was me thinking it was the last ice age that formed this island!

As for a celebration, I'll only be rejoicing if it is the last anniversary where England is still in a union with Scotland, Wales and the unionist Irish rump.

Independence for all, up the English Republic.
