Duncan Smith says Tories got homes sell-off wrong

MARGARET THATCHER'S policy of selling off council homes led to swathes of the population being "left behind" in ghetto estates, former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said.
While insisting that he was not saying the 1980s sell-off was wrong, he said its architects did not implement necessary social reforms. The result was a growing gap between the bottom socio-economic group and the rest, with the worst estates populated only by the most "broken" families, he said.

yes one of thatchers cash schemes that seemed alright at the time
but why on earth did labour not reverse it? when they came to power?,could it be that their voters were among those who bought,and would have voted against labour
now there are practicaly no council homes left in decent areas,only the scheme slums
yes thatcher who sold the uk family silver just to get votes and be popular,now the thing she wanted ie british companies owned by the british,are either closed or sold to johnnie foriegner

I cannot remember Iain Duncan Smith are you sure he was a Tory Leader? Maybe one of those self appointed leaders that ousted Margaret Thatcher. She gave the ordinary man in the street the ability to buy his own house at a reasonable price that he could afford. The fact that the councils never got round to re-investing in more low rental properties is her fault, I do not she understood along with a lot of other folk that they would look for other options. You can recognise the folk that took advantage of the offer, their houses are immaculate, in fact some got a wee bit carried away with themselves. At the end of the street are the flats with the usual array of old car bodies and for some funny reason, lack of sunshine and vitality. For those who criticise Margaret Thatcher, may she forever be blessed, I suggest you access the government information of the condition of the country when she took over. Seventy percent of small businesses approaching bankruptcy and the whole of the UK industrial base in free fall. Denis Healey, more suited for posters advertising the Labour Party than actual control of the country. I certainly must apologise for this outburst, however I have told it as I saw it and only apologise for bringing up old wounds.
