FORMER Bay City Rollers frontman Nobby Clark and a group of environmental campaigners have received an award at the House of Lords for sprucing up a city housing estate.
Dumbiedykes residents received funding from the city council to renew street lights, build new fences, plant trees and attend gardening classes.

Their hard work was recognised by the British Urban Regeneration Association at the award ceremony last Friday.

Mr Clark, the original singer with the 1970s group, began the work after moving to the area five years ago.

The 57-year-old, who is chairman of the Dumbiedykes Environmental Group, said: "I moved there and had the horrible feeling people were living behind their doors, afraid to go out."

Well done to Dumbiedykes Environment Group it has definately has made a difference. The high flats have now been spruced up as well but it has also helped make those involved feel their opinio9ns are valued.

Not so long ago many in this area felt their homes would be next for the wrecking ball after the Holyrood development and the building of luxuary flats (some of whose new/part time residents complained about them spoiling the view to the crags!)

Thanks to community initiatives like the Environmental Group, the food coop, the IT centre, the Braidwood centre etc Dumbiedykes have managed to retain a sense of community although many residents, like others throughout the Old town, have concerns about the impact of new threats - like the loss of family housing through private flats turning to HMO's and developments like Caltongate which will affect local services like the Royal Mile Primary School and Nursery.

Community voices should be listened to like this not like over on the Canongate - see today article on Caltongate!
