PUBS, clubs and restaurants in the Grassmarket are banding together in a bid to improve the "drinking den" image of the area.
They have formed a new group of licensed traders, with the support of police, council officials and environmental wardens, and they hope to counteract its reputation as a magnet for stag and hen parties.

Managers will be sharing information and CC
TV images of any troublemakers. They also plan to promote the area together, as a safe and attractive destination for families.

More than 30 businesses in the Grassmarket, Victoria Street and George IV Bridge have already expressed their interest. They will be holding a meeting next Wednesday. The group has been set up following the multi-million-pound redevelopment of the area.

Anne Allen, the manager of The Lot, said: "We're committed to encouraging responsible drinking and trying to get the Grassmarket back to being a family friendly area. The behaviour of a minority spoils it for the majority.

"Staff don't want to have to deal with rowdy behaviour, or customers swearing or being abusive.

"There's a lot of campaigning going on to publicise the fact the area is a hidden jewel. We want to make sure people to have a safe and enjoyable experience."

The group plan to meet once a month.

They will share information in a bid to crackdown on any troublemakers. Police, council licensing officials and environmental wardens will also attend.

They are also expected to discuss a ban on stag and hen parties at their next meeting. Many pubs already ban groups wearing fancy dress or football colours.

Ms Allen added: "I think 95 per cent of us would like to see a ban. As soon as we see a group wearing bunny ears or flashing lights we know we want to avoid them."

Paul Duncan, the manager of Mamma's Pizza and a committee member of the Grassmarket Forum, said: "This is about working together to promote the area and help attract the type of clientele we want. The Grassmarket looks lovely since the redevelopment and its whole ambience is different."

Nick Cumming, 48, an events manager who lives in the Grassmarket, said most residents were optimistic about the new group.

He said: "Hopefully this will make a big difference, especially to weekend rowdiness. We hope they will finally get a grip on the antisocial behaviour that has blighted this place for a number of years."

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police also welcomed the initiative. He said: "We are committed to delivering safer communities for local residents and businesses alike. Our community beat officers already work closely with Grassmarket residents and licensees to promote a safe and secure environment."

some good pubs in grassmarket!its a pity they are spoiled by idiots who cant handle drink,,working in a pub one expects a bit of banter and things can get crazy sometimes,,but as for swearing at staff,,,,only been sworn at once, and the guy got put out, dragged him by collar and dumped outside!bar staff should refuse to serve folk who are abusive,,its THEIR discretion who they wish to serve, and if folk are abusive, well tough!they dont get a drink!

"...and they hope to counteract its reputation as a magnet for stag and hen parties."

Only in Britain could a load of traders band together and campaign for measures to REDUCE their trade.

Have they really taken leave of their senses or am I dreaming this? The Grassmarket is the place for people to go out and ENJOY themselves. Has it really got to the stage that enjoying yourself is to be discouraged?

...

Pubs and clubs *don't* want to be known as drinking dens.

That's ironic.

The Grassmarket should be renamed the PukeMarket - the place unfortunately stinks and is just nauseating.

Why are drunks served in these places? If they are,and they are, the pubs etc are breaking the law.
Why no prosecutions?

Always good to hear about social restraints on the idiots like 3. above who are too socially inept to understand that 'enjoying yourself' does not have to involve getting so drugged up on alcohol to destroy any sense of responsibility and so ruin everyone else's enjoyment in the vicinity.

No one is advocating any restraint on decent considerate drinkers. It's the morons who drink far too much and make everyone else's lives a misery that's in the sights. It speaks volumes that thickheads like this should want to complain and defend that sort of behaviour.

Wait for it #9 - only minutes until someone tells you if you don't like it, don't live near it.

Its just rubbish down there at night (well, after 4 o clock in the afternoon).

Its a half hearted attempt. If they really wanted to make a difference they would blow up their own pubs or invent a cure for badness.

3 Its not a case of stopping people enjoying themselves. Its entirely about stopping you from enjoying yourself.

#3 &4 Idiots out in force early I see. Look the Stag and Hen parties actually cost more money than they bring in in terms of extra policing and the comcomitant costs of cleaning the area. They drive away families and reasonable drinkers who actually spend more than the p*ssed up fat bald clowns in fancy dress that plague the place at weekends. Dublin got shot of them and so should we.

#9:

Take the advice offered in #10. If anything, you're the one who's inept. Inept at life.

#16:

If you don't like it, go to drink at the Barnton Hotel. That's set up for families, old people and quiet drinkers. Leave the Grassmarket alone for those who do not fall into the same categories.

We dont really want our city to be peppered by drunks Petrolhead. YOU go drink in the barnton hotel. Or in a graveyard.

#17 I happen to live in the Grassmarket and am a frequent habitue of its better drinking spots. There are however certain emporiums that positively encourage idiots to get out of their face and make the place uninhabitable for any one with more than one brain cell. Judging from your posts you would be one of the said idiots.
(Barnton Hotel RIP alas).

#21 OK walked into that one. The point remains that it IS a residential area and we don't appreciate the contents of the shallow end of the gene pool washing over the place every weekend.
#19 elayne spot on. tho tacky hardly begins to describe 'the screeching banshees'.

I have every sympathy davie. A few years ago in cologne I saw an old woman emptying buckets of water over drunks who were noising it up outside her house. From three floors up.

I'd recommend you do the same as it very funny.

"A few years ago in cologne I saw an old woman emptying buckets of water over drunks who were noising it up outside her house."

Gosh Christopher, it has taken Cologne a long time to catch up.

This was the very thing down in our own Grassmarket some 300 years ago to the cry of "Gardez l'eau".

Might be time to restore this ancient tradition though and it might result in the place smelling better!!

Is that your new name? Clearly, you don't (as we know) live in Edinburgh. The Barnton Hotel has been closed for years and is sitting as an empty shell after the useless council agreed that it should be flats.

No one wants flats on one of Britain's busiest junctions. The site is crumbling and for sale with planning permission.

#27 It is sad about the Barnton Hotel. I passed it last week and the state it is in now is very distressing. I suppose it will just be left to fall into complete ruin or perhaps we should preserve it as a monument to the folly of believing that councillors chould be allowed anywhere near property developers

The Barnton Hotel went pretty badly downhill in its latter years, I would have used it as my local as I lived at Braehead which is near to the Barnton, but instead I/we preferred the Cramond Inn and the Cramond Brig which were both more cheerful and smarter.

My, my, my! Aren't we all holier than Knox! We were never young and rowdy ourselves then, were we?! The Grassmarket proprietors are free to "clean up" their area, but there will still be loud-and-lewd youngsters out for a good time, and they'll just move on to another area. Anyone who can find these people an attractive venue where they can be as loudy-and-rowdy as they wish without annoying anyone else, will be on to big money. So may I suggest to Donald Trump that he scoops us Scots by buying the derelict Barnton Hotel, demolishes it, and constructs a truly fantastic venue for the "rowdies"?!
