Hibs 1-2 Aberdeen: Dons diminish Hibs' hopes

Published Date: 24 May 2009
Hibs' hopes of leapfrogging Aberdeen to take fifth place in the SPL table evaporated at Pittodrie this afternoon as the Easter Road side lost for the first time this season to the Dons in the final game of the campaign.
A bizarre goal from Lee Miller, Hibs goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay thumping a clearance of the Aberdeen striker's back before standing bemused as he watched the ball roll into the net, and a stunning free-kick from Charlie Mulgrew fired the Dons into next season's Europa League as rivals Dundee United went down to Rangers at Tannadice.

Derek Riordan pulled on back on the stroke of half-time for Hibs but it wasn't enough as Mixu Paatelainen's side lost skipper Rob Jones to a back injury and Ian Murray to a red card, the utility player sent off for picking up a second yellow card.

Sone Aluko had the chance to make it an even more comfortable victory for the Dons after referee David Somers awarded a penalty for hand ball substitute Johnatan Johansson, but Ma-Kalambay got down well to his left to save his spot-kick four minutes from time.

Aberdeen, knowing nothing less than a victory would give them a chance of European football next season, immediately pinned Hibs down deep inside their own half, Scott Severin and Peter Pawlett both seeing shots blocked as the Dons went for an early goal.

Jones, Steven Thicot and Murray were all called upon as Hibs struggled at times to get the ball out of their own half but, just as it looked as if Mixu Paatelainen's players had weathered the storm, they conceded possibly the most bizarre goal of the season.

Having gathered an innocuous through ball, there appeared to be no danger as Ma-Kalambay prepared to clear although he was clearly unhappy with the presence of Aberdeen striker Miller standing by his right shoulder.

But as Miller held his ground, Ma-Kalambay booted the ball off his back and stood transfixed as it rolled behind him and across the line. Even referee David Somers seemed taken aback, the official contemplating what he had just seen before signalling for a goal.

Ma-Kalambay was incensed and had to be restrained from making his way to the centre circle to argue his case. Miller, however, had done nothing wrong, the former Hearts striker having made no attempt to interfere with the big Belgian's clearance.

Ma-Kalambay, however, showed he hadn't let that blunder affect him, pushing away a vicious free-kick from Severin and then blocking a close-range header from the same player and then acrobatically turning aside a powerful shot from Gary McDonald.

He did, though, enjoy a moment of luck as Pawlett's shot took the slightest of deflections before crashing back off the post.

There great anxiety in the Hibs ranks as skipper Jones went crashing to the turf holding his back in agony after a challenge on Sone Aluko, the big defender requiring a lengthy spell of treatment before somewhat gingerly getting back to his feet just in time to see Ma-Kalambay fumble a Mulgrew free-kick.

An angled shot from Derek Riordan which Jamie Langfield safely held was the only threat from Hibs who fell two behind in the 45th minute as Mulgrew curled home a wonderful free-kick from 30 yards which left Ma-Kalambay helpless.

But Riordan did throw Hibs a lifeline in the second minute of the two added on at the end of the first half following that Jones' injury, the striker stepping inside Lee Mair after collecting Ross Chisholm's pass to slot home his 12th goal of the season.

Suddenly the party mood which had descended on Pittodrie as the home fans learned of Rangers leading at Tannadice subsided somewhat, leaving Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood to ponder whether to try to simply hold onto a lead which would guarantee a place in next season's Europa League or go for further goals.

As a result of Riordan's strike Aberdeen made a less certain start to the second half than they had the first but, again, they managed to gain the upperhand and Miller should have restored their two goal lead in the 66th minute when Stuart Duff's pass left him with only Ma-Kalambay to beat, the big goalkeeper using his legs to block his opponent's shot.

Hibs were forced into a reshuffle as Jones signalled he was unable to continue, Alan O'Brien replacing him as Murray took the captain's armband, a honour he held for only two minutes before he was given his marching orders by referee Somers.

Having been booked earlier for a foul on Miller, Murray was adjudged to have fouled Pawlett as he crossed the Hibs star's path, the upshot being a second yellow and an early bath in the 68th minute for the clearly angered Easter Road player.

It now means Murray will now miss the first three SPL matches of next season and he'd feel rightly aggrieved with tackles more sinister then the one he perpetrated on Pawlett not attracting the yellow card.

Aberdeen: Langfield, Mulgrew, Foster, McDonald, Severin, Miller (Wright 83), Vidal, Duff, Mair, Aluko (Stewart 87), Pawlet (Paton 79)t. Subs not used: Bossu, Maguire, Clark, Ross.

Hibs: Ma-Kalambay, Van Zanten, Thicot, Jones (O'Brien 66), Murray, Rankin, Bamba, Chisholm, Stevenson, Fletcher (Johansson 81), Riordan. Subs not used: McNeil, Keenan, McCormack, Campbell, Cropley.
Referee: David Somers.

Erm, thought Aberdeen were the home side??
Any way, while we are at it a good point for Hearts.
6 points clear of their nearest rival for third place and 12 clear of the hobbits who scored one less point than Motherwell.
PS Well done to the rankers as the others in the SPL were even more rank.

Brian you are maybe disgusted by the moderators, but I think they pulled the thread because I mentioned the Rangers fans sectarian singing today.

Everytime that truth surfaces and anyone says anything on these boards about the disgrace such as today, then the mods pull the thread. They want to brush it under the carpet and pretend it never happened. Yet today again we heard the catholic religion and the people of Ireland being degraded and offended by racist and sectarian chanting by thousands of so called Rangers fans.

Worse still Rangers players sang along. Shocking disgraceful and worse still the media, the spl and sfa and Rangers FC will pretend it never happened. That's the real sadness in it all.

TM, they'll never take away my freedom,

39 Patrick

One of the reasons Aberdeen fans never liked calderwood was his overt affection for Rangers FC. In aftermatch interviews v Rangers when he started talking about his own players he'd always thrown in a "wee Barry's got that class and we know big Kris can score so we stuck Diamond on him" He used first names for Rangers players and surnames for his own players - what's that all about?

Then alst week before the game v Rangers he was caught on camera running onto the pitch during the warm up to shake disgraced Barry Ferguson's hand and share a laugh with him. What's that all about?

I don't blame Aberdeen fans for disliking him.

BTW His cup record his pathetic at Aberdeen.

#445 i think it is very sad..i think it is very sad that rangers fans struggle to sing songs that are not sectarian..i think it is very sad that the monkey media ignored it until uefa brought it up as an issue..which is why all the muppets in the media deserve the contempt they are held in..but hey i would not be overly offended by the behaviour of a group of football fans..especially in relation to the songs they sing..they enjoy folk like you getting annoyed/offended by it..ignore it and hope that uefa deal with it sometime soon

I know I never said anything offensive today Brian.

Point is a raised a very serious issue which the Mods on here want to pretend never happened.

I mentioned that had it been the Muslim religion that was abused by Rangers fans, we'd be watching worldwide news coverage of the international outrage that occured in Scotland and RFC fans and player etc..would be getting death threats.

The media want to pretend the sectarianism and racism today never happened.

That's why I believe they deleted the thread.

My outrage and anger is not with the ignorant sectarian morons - they no no better.

My outrage is with the media, the spl and the sfa and RFC. They should know better. Only Jim Traynor on Radio Scotland made any mention about it today saying "they really should stop singing this stuff". That was the only person in the media who even mentioned it.

I think strachan banked on getting a big return this season from maloney, mcgeady and nakamura...not one of them had a good season. I think his whole strategy for winning this league centred on those three players hitting the heights , but not one of them came close.

That 'busted' strachan's game plan methinks. He relied on those three players for everything else to work.
I said earlier, I would be glad to see strachan go...I won't be screaming blue murder for him to go...if he stays, then I'll get behind him and just get onwith it, fot one more season...but I think we'd be wasting time. We went into the split a point ahead of rangers and came out the other end 4 points behind, a swing of 5 points.

We were supposed to be going for a title, yet managed 8 points from 15. In three of the five games, we couldn't score, but worse than that, we hardly looked as though we could score.

Now that tells me that there are big problems with the squad...that was a feeble attempt at the defence of a title...not feeble, pitiful in fact...and it came at the end of a season littered with poor performances.

I heard strachan say post match that he knows where things went wrong...when the f. did he find out ? After full-time today, like it just dawned on him ffs ?

That was a stupid comment to make clearly seeking to give assurance that he has the perfect remedy that will restore Celtic's fortunes.
I think it's too late mr strachan...he should have seen at the end of last season that we were only marginally ahead of rangers, and we only just won the title. It should have been clear to him then that it was no time to stand still...it was time to see how we could get ourselves much further ahead...rangers were right on our shoulder and then they went out and spent £17m.

If he stays, we'll just have to get on with that, but strachan's support I fear has fallen dangerously low....he won't get much chance next season...if Celtic are churning out this rubbish, the fans wil

Cosmos, back in Jan when we were 7 points clear and RFC were putting all and sundry up for sale - did you not think we had enough to win the title?

Patrick in all honesty we are witnessing an era of very poor football from both clubs. There is a genuine lack of quality and class in both sides, and there has been for quite a few seasons.

WGS has done a better job for the tic than saint MON did, and with a fraction of the funds that were made available to MON. WGS has won 3 titles in 4 seasons, what more do you want.

Had Lawell released funds for WGS to strengthen in the Jan. window when the Gers were 7 points behind, we may have been talking about 4IAR today. Try looking to the men who handle the money for some of the problems instead of a boss whose title record is very good.

#67 no..i thought we would win the league but we were mediocre and only had 1 fit striker...the lack of investment.which left us with two dreadfully out of touch strikers for the second part of the season cost us big time..i think the board and maybe the manager thought we had enough..

#63 Desmond is more worried about his honorary knighthood. He will keep his 6 billion euro safely in his account.
As for Reid? England's former colonial boss in the 6 counties of the north east of Ireland is playing a waiting game.
With these two top loyalists at Celtic park,we should feel more than safe!

Most of the fans thought we had enough - in fact up until 8 days ago, I still though we'd had enough in the locker to beat Hibs and Hearts.

This current Rangers side is probably the worst ever team to win a championship. The only thing they have above the rest is guts, hunger and determination. Fair play to them that's all it took this season.

Strachan didn't push for more money last summer...he said the other day that fans shouldn't blame the board...he told the board that he felt he had the players that would keep the title.
I think the interview was published on Friday past.

It is not the mere fact of losing the title...it is the manner of our defeat...terrible performances throughout the season...but even despite all that, we went into the split 1 point up and 5 cup finals...we went out without putting up a fight in my view. It was so lacklustre that it seemed as though it didn't really matter very much quite honestly. The spirit of the team has gone under strachan's watch. The quality argument should only be telling when we're in the champions league...in domestic football, we should be able to win most games and with a bit of flair and confidence....winning with flair and confidence was something that we saw so little of throughout the season.
82

Daillyman,

25/05/2009 00:09:34
Tim I know that you think the Celtic squad is full of quality when compared to the Gers, but I really think you are over rating their abilities.

At the start of the season I would have said that Boruc, McGeady, Naka, and Brown were better than what we could put on the park.

Now I would say that Brown is the one player out of the ones I mentioned I would want out of you squad.

Boruc like BF, and AM. off the park have been a disgrace to their clubs this season.

McGeady has regressed as a player, and Naka rarely showed up for your club this season.

And I know that this is the poorest Gers side to win the SPL, as you said, but what does that say about the tic.

#81 to e fair you or i dont know how hard strachan pushed for csh last summer or in jan...but its hard to disagree that or lst 2 performances summed up all thats wrong with the current squad...mediocre at best
84

sonofcosmos,

#82 it says we were poorer than a poor rangers side over the season sadly

What about McDonald and Maloney and Robson and POTY Caldwell - trying to tell me these guys wouldn't get in the RFC side.

You are dead wrong about Naka. If he had been fit for the last six games we might have won this title - but he's been playing with an injury and through the pain barrier - even so he ran the show at Ibrox recently.

Naka is class.

That is the sad thing.

Rangers are the worst SPL champions ever, and a Celtic team with better quality and more money behind it couldn't beat them.

for all the critisism he still gets gary caldwell is the bravest player at celtic park..he tries to make a killer pass while the rest always take the easy option passing safely to the side (or out of the park in scott browns case)

#87 lack of a good striker in jan cost us jvoh and samaras were injured and neither came back with any form..the celtic mentality does seem to fear sustained success and the club blew it big time to move well ahead of rangers..and it is very annoying

Anyway off to bed to continue reading one of the best autobiographies I've ever read by Ralph Glasser....had never heard of the bloke...born into a jewish family living in grinding poverty in the gorbals in 1920s, he left school at 14 to work in a factory. During his spare time, he read books in the mitchell library , and in the late 1930s, entered an essay competition which led to him being offered a scolarship at Oxford Univeristy. A fascinating life story, beautifully written.

Tim I said the players mentioned in my post.

Caldwell was the most consistant player the tic had through out the season, and deserved his award.

I will ask you how many Celtic supporters would have bet on him winning it?

Maloney, when fit he rarely starts for the Celtic.

McDonald like the rest of the Celtic strikers had a poor season.

Naka with all his skill had a disappointing season, was a non factor in your CL group stage games. But he does hit a nice free kick.

Disagree with you. Maloney fit always starts - but he's been injured a lot this season.

McDonald had a good season and ran himself into the deck because his partners were like statues. He also scored some great goals - Ibrox, Rugby park, Man Utd...
How can you say his season was poor?

Naka simply got tired and injured. The games Celtic won this season were largly down to Naka. He was the composure, the controller, the genuis at work.

I would say that Brown was the driving force in midfield for Celtic and had more of an impact this season not Naka.
