A FAMILY-run business on Leith Walk today claimed it had become the latest victim of the work on Edinburgh's £512 million tram line.
Gas fire and heating retailer World of Gas, next to Pilrig Church, announced it is to close its doors after 28 years.

Owner Marlene Johnstone, who started the shop with her late husband Ron in 1980, said her business was fine until the tram works started last year and now weekly losses of a "four figure" sum have become unsustainable.

Business leaders today warned there were three or four other businesses around Leith Walk which were also on the brink of closure as a result of works to move utilities for the new tram line.

Tram firm TIE today refused to be drawn on the latest closure, but insisted there may be a number of factors behind the move.

But Mrs Johnstone, 50, who runs the store with son Gary, 26, said the losses she has incurred over the last year means she can no longer carry on.

She said: "It has just been horrendous over the last few months, it took us so long to build up the business and we were fine before the tram works started, but not since.

"On Leith Walk we depend so much on passing trade and also having some parking spaces, but both of these have been hit badly by the trams.

"We have had jobs booked but have had to cancel them because delivery drivers couldn't reach us. It is really upsetting because I wanted to hand the business over to my son when I retired."

A survey by the Federation of Small Businesses in February revealed two-thirds of businesses on Leith Walk have seen a "significant decrease" in the number of customers since work started in August last year.

It also claimed that 56.9 per cent of businesses surveyed have seen their turnover drop significantly.

Walker's ironmongery, on Leith Walk's Crighton Place, is also set to close later this summer after 32 years in operation.

Owner Alistair Walker claimed earlier this year that his trade is down 40 per cent since tram work got under way.

Gordon Burgess, a spokesman for the Leith Walk and Constitution Street Traders Association, said: "I know of three or four other businesses who are close to going under and they are all struggling in the face of the tram works.

"You can't get away from how difficult all this work is making life for people and it breaks your heart, especially when you consider World of Gas has been in business for nearly three decades.

"I don't think anyone is denying there are other factors at play here in terms of the slowing economy, but if there are no parking spaces near your shop then it is extremely difficult."

A spokesman for tram firm TIE said: "No-one likes to hear about businesses closing. There may be a number of factors involved and it would therefore not be appropriate for TIE to speculate."

A spokesman for the city's Chamber of Commerce added: "Our hope is that the various support schemes will help people weather the difficulties."

"Our hope is that the various support schemes will help people weather the difficulties."

Oh, so they actually admit that there will be difficulties now do they? That is a first. Previously they have said "business as usual".

This crazy scheme should be scrapped now before they totally ruin Edinburgh.

Oh yeah. We'll have a lovely new tram going up and down Leith Walk---past dozens of boarded up buildings that used to be shops, offices, bars and cafes.

This whole thing is like something directly out of a Fawlty Towers script---only it isn't at all funny.

The first of many no doubt.
Won't it be great to travel on a shiny tram past all the empty buildings?
The trams are a disgrace.

nothing to do with the housing slump, price of gas and that world of gas is linked to C & C gas services who use non-qualified £4.50 an hour apprentices to do their gas installations for their overpriced fires them rather than Corgi reg'd guys. My heart bleeds.

we live in an age of electricity now. Gas is rubbish: it leaks causing explosions, is poisonous and you can't run your fridges, TV, burglar alarm, etc on gas. This shop is obviously a relic of a bygone age

So a niche shop selling high value items was dependent on footfall to drum up business? Nonsense of course. Oh and lets ignore that the price of gas is going through the roof too?
Sounds like a failing business with a failing business model - which has been lept on by the anti-tram nimbys and the EEN muppets.

"we depend so much on passing trade"

For people buying gas fires? What a load of rubbish.

You depend on parking availability, sure enough, and that would be a better thing to focus on as far as the trams work goes. But to suggest this is because people aren't able to walk past and say "ooh, a gas fire, shall we get one?" is frankly ridiculous.

To all the people who are saying that World of Gas deserves to go out of business. Lets see you say the same thing when Princess Street is closed of for 7 months.

And I bet a lot of you are being a bit snobbish that a shop like that even exists probably too far down market for you.

All these tacky shops brings money into Edinburgh. Or are you one of the nimby's of the world you want the people to come and the moeny to flow but not in your back yard. As i said probably one of the snobs of Edinburgh.

#22

You are correct it could have been other business issues that caused the shop to close. But why do you accept that statement from TIE. Do you also accept TIE's statement that the tram will be a finacial success.

No i just don't think these shops fit in with the character of Princes St as a World Heritage site.

Unfortunately i don't live in Princes St, so i don't think i can be accused of NIMBYISM. I am all for the trams though and one of the reasons for this is the investment it'll bring to Edinburgh.

I used World of Gas once, many years ago, to install central heating. Think the only time I went to the shop was to pay the bill. Don't know how much of their business was in gas-fitting, but how much of that was passing trade, and how much (more) came from the yellow pages or (nowadays) the web?

The ignoramuses who forced through this idiotic scheme and are continuing to push it forward should pay for this fiasco with their jobs.

It is perfectly clear the DO NOT GIVE A SH*T about the businesses that are going under. The disrespect being shown to the people of this City beggars belief, and all so they can have a lovely, tourist-atracting tram line to brag about.

People's very livelihoods are being taken away from them, schools are closing, the City of Edinburgh is nearly bankrupt and all the talk is about selling off even more council land to pay for this money pit of a tram line.

This whole project has gone far enough, it should be scrapped NOW and the remaining funds used to compensate IN FULL those businesses who have lost out during the construction works over the last year and the rest used to put Edinburgh back to how it was.

You know, coming from a person who actually knows the family from a long time ago, i find it very sad that all you people can do is slag off the people that have worked so hard to make something of themselves. Clearly a few people have found it funny that this has happened, but look at this way, this is someones lively hood, not a job that they can leave one day and go and get another job. This is a business they have worked hard to build and something the owner was hoping to pass down. I find it unbelieveable that all people have done is mock the situation, such as coming up with stupid names, slagging off their product, slagging off the owners.....all i would say is for 1 second, think that this was your business and that you were hoping to pass this on to your kids.....then you may feel different about the situation.

I want to say good luck to them in the future as they are a really nice family and i know from my parents how hard both Ian and Marlene worked on this company, i hope things work out for you and stuff all the people that may be against you on this site - they are worthless heaps of cr4p!!

Good luck Marlene and Gary!

Whilst it may be unfortunate for this business to close,I for one do not believe that after trading for 28 years it is having to close because of the trams project.

If this is the case then we have to believe that this business has been running at a profit for 27 years and if so surely it can sustain itself during a period of time of no more than 12 months?

I suspect we are not getting the full story and it would be nice if the owner showed transparency by allowing us to view her profit / loss for the previous 27 years?

In otherwords this story is a non story.

Duncan #12 has hit the nail on the head.

The point where she cries "we depend heavily on passing trade" is the point she loses the argument.

People don't buy a gas appliance on the impulse of walking past a gas appliance store.

When the tram line is up and running Leith Walk will be a far more expensive (in terms of ground rent) and desirable location for shops that DO depend on passing trade due to the improved transport links. It's unlikely this shop would have survived that regeneration anyway.

Maybe some figures as to how many businesses fail on Leith Walk in a normal year compared the present one might shed some light on the situation.

Heads should roll for those who forced this money-gulping monstrosity on The City of Edinburgh and all the people who live here.

Optimus Prime, and any others who share his view.

Can you please provide whatever evidence you have which proves beyond reasonable doubt that the existence of trams will increase investment in Edinburgh?
And by investment i mean, as i think you do, private investment not public.

I would be interested to see what the failed business rate in the areas being dug up was per year for the previous 5 years compared to the past year. Perhaps then those comments about such firms going to the wall will be silenced.

Those who question the need to continue using gas as old fashioned or expensive should note that depsite the price increases recently it is still a far more effective and efficient heating fuel than electricity.

Excuse me for getting angry but do any of you pay attention. This business was in business for 28 years, not open yesterday and shut tomorrow must have been doing something right?. If you really want to know the hardship that everyone is going through and really realise the stupidity that is involved in this scheme try working for a week in leith walk. TIE and the Council are to blame for the loss of recent business to most of the businesses in Leith Walk. I hold them personally responsible and I will not forgive them for their short sightedness and lack of respect and care. If you think this is just pie in the sky ask yourself why there were 150 traders at a meeting at the end of april, why there are so many hardship stories in the newspapers, why people are staying away from Edinburgh and shopping on the outskirts, why our city looks like something from the Third World instead of being the great city it is supposed to be. Used to be called the Athens of the North look at it I mean really look at it. As for the state of the front of the shop, do you have to contend with concrete dust, debris, etc. This is really not a bad looking shop. Oh by the way electricity is going up in price as well. As one comment said on this site where are you going to be when there are no shops in Edinburgh. Princes Street next!!!

God bless this family I hope they find a future and manage to work things out they do not deserve after 28 years of providing a service and a good product to be out of business.

OK stop the trams, let the traffic get worse and worse and then build the motorways and car parks to deal with it and then we'll have no businesses left in the city centre. Once those roadworks start you really will have something to moan about.
If the antitrammers are right then all the businesses in Dublin, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Croydon and most European cities must have closed down and the places be destitute because they all have tramways and according to the antitrammers they are BADDD!
What are you lot going to complain about when the system is up and running and people in parts of the city who don't have trams start clamouring for them as they are doing in the Manchester area?

EUAN,

How did you vote at the last election?
41

Ian down under,

Kawerau 22/06/2008 21:47:04
#63 I actually agree with much of what you say. Yes there are loads of roadworks and yes I have been over recently. My family live in Longniddry and we can get into Edinburgh in 19 minutes [by electric train], by bus it's 50 minutes [48 on the express bus!] and it is stop start all the way. That is why we need an improved rail based network and that includes a tram network and a heavy rail network for further out.
If the current Granton/ Leith tramway was put onto the old railbed from Leith Central via Abbeyhill to the Waverley and then tunnelled up and under Princes St you could extend using mainly old rail lines to Musselburgh, Barnton and along the line of Ferry Road. The line could run alongside the current railway past Craigentinny and over the junction at Portobello as the old Lothian Lines once did. You can then access Musselburgh and the South Circle.
Add that to main line branches to Gorebridge, Penicuik, and Haddington, increase service to North Berwick/Dunbar, plus Currie and Livingston South and you will take a lot of peak hour [especially] traffic off the roads. The buses will run better and with seamless ticketing can be used to feed the rail stations along with Park and ride at a few main locations.
I was in Manchester when they put the trams back. Yes there was disruption in bulding but some decrepit areas with rows of closed shops are now booming again, all because customers can get there. If the people in the gas heater shop could get some help to tide them over then they can expect a much better business future.
