HIBS boss John Collins is set to miss Scotland's crunch clash with Italy at Hampden this weekend to jet off on a continental spying mission.
The Easter Road manager, who attended Scotland's last home game against Ukraine, won't be part of the sell-out crowd at the national stadium and will instead use the break from domestic action to run the rule over potential signing targets.

Collins has made no secret of his desire to bolster his squad when the January transfer window opens as the Hibees look to build on what has been a highly-promising start to the season.

He has already successfully dipped into the transfer market over the summer recruiting the likes of Brian Kerr, Clayton Donaldson and Yves Ma-Kalambay, who have all established themselves as important members of the first-team squad.

However, with suspensions and injuries likely to mount over the winter period and tiredness taking its toll as the campaign draws to a close, Collins is aware of the need to have strength in depth.

And, while he was keeping the destination of his trip close to his chest, he did reveal that he plans to watch potential targets in action.

"I'm probably going to be overseas," said Collins. "It's a chance to look at a couple of players but I'll be watching the Scotland game on television and it's one I'm looking forward to." One player whose name is being linked with Hibs is Kilmarnock striker Colin Nish.

The Rugby Park forward is out of contract at the end of the season and has so far refused to put pen to paper on a new deal in Ayrshire.

It's understood he would be available for a nominal fee in January.

Meanwhile, Collins admitted that Thierry Gathuessi's display against Gretna at the weekend has given him exactly the kind of selection dilemma every manager wants.

The Cameroon internationalist featured at Fir Park for the first time in six weeks and was one of the stand-out performers as Hibs edged out the Borderers 1-0. The former FC Sete defender was called upon due to injuries and Collins conceded that his display has given him food for thought.

"I was delighted for Thierry because he had been out the team for a few weeks but he came in and did an excellent job," said Collins.

"He tired a little bit in the last ten or 15 minutes but overall it was a good performance and I was pleased with his tackling and his distribution.

"He has a tough job fighting for his place because Kevin McCann has done ever so well but what we do know is any time he has come in he has done very well.

"He didn't speak much English when he arrived but he has been working with the English teacher for the last five or six weeks and is improving all the time. He was the only player that didn't really speak much English but he's coming on great. I'm sure the better his English gets the better he will get on the pitch.

"And that's great news for me because every manager wants competition for places."

I was at the game on Saturday and Gathuessi's defending was horrific at times. He is good going forward however.

Hearts fan in peace here.

Has JC actually brought any decent players to ER?

Kerr, O'Brien, MaCalamity, Donaldson etc...... all average at best.

Discuss.

3

Pedantic_Hibee,

14/11/2007 12:31:50

Kerr's been poor I must admit.

O'Brien needs a bit of time and confidence but he'll come good.

Ma-Kalambay can only get better, he's got the confidence, youth and presence on his side. Every faith in him, despite some shaky moments.

Donaldson has already shown he knows where the net is this season, a ticked box for me.

Morais has been our signing of the season I think. Direct, skilful and a decent final ball.

Who has Romanov signed this season ? Apart from two Hibs rejects, a reject from Sheffield United and a busload of eastern Europeans ?

What happened to the £10m annual player budget, the £51m stand, the world class coach etc etc ?

Gullible fools.

If you think all of the above are average at best, they're still 7 points clear of your lot and they urinated on your bonfire on August 4th as well, at Tynecastle.

# 3 Pedantic

Got in there before me Pedantic. Sitting joint 2nd top at the moment. Looking not too bad for a bunch of average players.

The only player I have been really disapointed in is Kerr.

How anyone can say Morais looks average shows a complete lack of knowledge of football. He is 21 and is full of potential.

Nice to see everything is rosey over at Tynecastle again though. Must be delighted getting into the top 6.

#2 - MaCalamity - Six shut outs out of 13 in the league including trips to Ipox and Swinecastle, not bad for an average player.

How many shut outs has your Englands No 1 keeper had?

Kerr had been rather average but still good enough to score the winner in certain derby.
O'Brien has really struggled so far, in fact he has looked a little clueless.
(Am I correct in saying that both these were singings were recommened by Tommy Craig? If so stick to your own ones John!)
Makalamby has had a few dodgy moments and one horrific performance against Aberdeen but overall he's been ok and is improving. He's far better than what we've had and has made no more mistakes than Arthur Boruc. Gets more stick than he deserves IMO.
Morais has looked bright and Donaldson has 5 goals including a hat-trick, although he still has a lot to improve on.
Overall not to bad and, as was mentioned, the league able makes decent reading at the moment.
We could, however, do with a little more quality in midfield and perhaps a new central defender. I feel we play through Boozy far too much and without him we struggle. Hopefully Benji and Zemmama coming back will give us more creativity.

It was an opinion shown by #1, why does it always have to deteriorate into a petty, childish slagging match?

How long do you think it takes to build a stand? A few months??!! Most people assume that it s fantasy, including hearts fans, you may be gullible one if you think we believe that p*sh!

I take it that makes Morais a Millwall reject? I happen to think we have some pretty gash players to but you have to make it tit for tat all the time. Living in a dream if you think all your squad is comprised of great talent.

Agree with #10. In my opinion Collins should be looking for cover at the back as you seem to be a bit low on quality central defenders if someone was to get injured.
Think you also might need a midfielder that can maybe have a shot or two rather than pass it 5 yards.

Wagner walked out cos it was a shambles, eh?

More likely Vlad or his henchmen tapped him up. How you can claim him as a "signing" I don't know, he's 16! We released him, so I'd look into that BTW, there was of course some shenagigans at the Milk Cup in Belfast - not saying he was the culprit - but we found and signed then released the boy, so something's not right.

Anyway the U19 Derby should be a cracker - after a 13-0 scoreline looks like the boys know where the net is...

definately missing something that's for sure!

who knows how the season will pan out. Not a great start but teams are still within touching distance.
The point is it's over a season so stop talkin guff.

Most good teams go on runs around the christmas period leagues all over the world and if the Weegies keep dropping points due to european commitments every chance it could be a close run thing with a few teams capable. Aberdeen, Utd Hibs and Motherwell on a good day can beat them and it could still be close if you get a run going.
Not the title - would be an amazing come back to do that but second place is very much for the taking.
Hope so anyway, beats the usual seasons when one of them run away with it.

Pap sure a few of you gret when in 1998 Hearts went up to lift the Scottish Cup, whilst Hearts, at the same time laughed at the Hibs for being a filthy stench and getting relegated.
Much rather be a team who have ambition to be better and maybe fail trying than a nobody club with nobody fans and no Scottish Cup success for over 106 years in succession.
Also seem to recall a few tears shed 2-4-06 from the few hardy souls who made the long trek through to Glasgow for the biggest derby match in history. Difficult to see through all the empty seats though. Absolute pasting and just to rub it in, an ex-hibby scored a hat-trick, 4-0 full time i seem to recall - with pleasure.

Stick that in yer beetamax

GrahamL,

I think #57 was using that example to demonstrate the fact that Hibs are not "joint second". They are third. The same way that Hearts weren't joint 1st in 1986, they were second. It's a little thing called goal difference.
If teams have the same number of points, then they use goal difference (thats "number of goals scored" - "number of goal conceded") to decide who is above who. The team with the highest (that's the bigger number) goal difference is higher in the league.

Do you see?

JC being from the real world pointed out a few home truths and they agreed TOGETHER that Wagner would be best served hitting the trail.

Youth does not prevent anyone getting a game at ER - lack of form or ability does.

Only a deluded Yam tube would try to mark up any form of credit in the fact that Hearts 'swooped' for this misfit - I'll give it a year and you won't even remember him.

My friend and myself both frequented this forum day after day for about seven-eight months both going into work next day and commenting on some laughable posts from both set of fans,
nowadays we log in maybe every two-three days because the forum has been spoilt by childish jealous remarks mainly coming from gorgie hearts supporters, occasionally a hibby will post nonsense,
so come on edin-evening-news, start deleting some of the eejit's from gorgie fundimental remarks.

#84 - If you want to see Hibs' supporters psoting tripe then look at the Hearts' threads, not Hibs'!

#78 - Graham - Good job you're not having to try to explain goal average to them! (p.s. Still can't believe we lost the league on a decimal point of a goal way back then!)

#84 - it's true there's little of redeeming value here just now, with exception of JC Man of Continental Mystery allusions, but the scrabble is amusing even so.

Southside Hibs you really don't have a clue...because Africa is not a country it's therefore impossible to be racist if you racially abuse Africans? More money on education & less on drugs. Your ability to be a twit is unlikely to be due to the team you support & more likely due to the fact you're a flanj.
JC was right, go abuse your wife
