Published Date: 26 August 2008
FORMER Hibs star Derek Riordan has been banned from every nightclub in Edinburgh.
The 25-year-old Celtic striker was handed a one-year ban under the Unight scheme after he allegedly verbally abused staff at the Berlin club when they refused him entry.

Within weeks, it is understood he was caught breaking the ban by entering the Espionage club – causing his ban to be extended to two years.

Bosses at Celtic today refused to comment on the ruling, calling it a "personal matter".

But Pc Mark Pickavance, who helped set up the Unight scheme, confirmed the player, who is from Granton, was among those handed a banning order from Edinburgh nightspots.

He said: "Riordan was banned for a year after an altercation with door stewards outside Berlin. That was increased to two years after he tried to get into Espionage."

The incident outside Berlin in Queensferry Street Lane led to the ban being imposed in May this year. Only a few weeks later, he was caught in Espionage.

Steven McLaren, a manager at Espionage, who was on duty the night of the incident, said: "Riordan managed to get into the club at about 11pm but one of the bar staff saw him and knew he was banned.

"Our door stewards approached him to ask him to leave and they got a mouthful of abuse. He was going on about how they thought they were 'big men' because they wanted him out. He claimed the ban had been served but we knew that wasn't the case.

"It went on for a few minutes but he left before he had to be ejected. We don't want him in Espionage.

"We stick very strictly to the Unight scheme for the protection of staff and customers. It's a great scheme."

Riordan signed for Celtic in June 2006 after scoring 64 goals in 146 appearances for Hibs, but has failed to make an impact at Parkhead.

He has been involved in a series of incidents in recent years, which include appearances in court.

He was found not guilty after trial of involvement in a brawl outside Biddy Mulligans in the Grassmarket in December, 2006.

In July 2005, Hibs star Steven Fletcher suffered a broken nose while he was out with several team-mates, including Riordan. They became caught up in a brawl at Bar 38 in George Street which involved up to 30 people.

Riordan was charged with breach of the peace in December 2004 after it was alleged he shouted and swore at police breaking up a fight between revellers in Lothian Road. But he was again found not guilty.

Riordan could not be contacted for comment today, but his grandmother May Riordan, who lives in Granton, said she could not believe he had been hit with the ban. She added: "I could be wrong, as grandmothers only hear the good stuff, but that's not like him. He's a quiet lad and not a fighter. I've not heard anything about this.

"You always hear about trouble in nightclubs, but he wouldn't be part of that."

UNITED AGAINST TROUBLEMAKERS
DEREK RIORDAN is one of 130 people to be hit with banning orders ranging from three months to life since the Unight scheme was launched in October.

The project has been hailed a "great success" by police and club owners who believe it has driven down crimes inside nightspots in the Capital.

The number of crimes reported in clubs between October and July fell to 936 against 1185 for the same period for the previous year.

Cabaret Voltaire reported a drop from 111 to 29, Lava and Ignite went down from 177 to 115, while Subway decreased from 46 to 21.

Twelve people have been given lifetime bans, including Don Webley, 26, who became the first person to receive one after being jailed for ten months for a vicious assault outside City in Market Street.

Pc Mark Pickavance said: "Unight has been a great success. We've seen a significant drop in crimes reported inside clubs and we're keeping troublemakers out."

I blame Kenny Richey and the bad example he is setting to Edinburgh's younger ned community.

Fifi la Bonbon,

Grasnny Riordan, your grandson is officially a ned. He shouts and swears at the police and is generally unpleasant to people trying to do their job. Now what are you going to do about it?

Maybe this had to be added as a clause to Derek's contract in advance of his return to Easter Road? ;)

Hardly a blow to Deek as most of the nightclubs in Edinburgh are rubbish!

This has been coming for a long time. I've seen him out and about and his behaviour is a disgrace. The lad really needs to grow up and start fullfilling his potential.

Just out of interest does anybody know how this scheme is put into practice. It seems virtually impossible to enforce. I'd imagine if you recieve a length ban then you keep your head down for a month and don't revisit the club where the offence took place you'll have no problem. As long as you don't have a reasonably high profile like Riordan i just can see this working.
9

Mug,

Haha! Deek loves to be in the paper! Should start his own column soon, Lost count of the amount of times ive seen him up the town, still want him back at hibs tho!

You've got to love the EEN eh?

Anything to get Deek on the home page (not sure if its on the front of the printed paper?)

I opened up the site andit was the first thing I saw, imagine my dismay when I realised what the story was actually about... Bah!!!

Hands up all the Hibby's who thought at first glance the story was about something else perhaps?

Anyhow, do him good to keep out the clubs & himself out of mischief....

#11 it was in an attempt to lighten the humour, however I am glad to see that you have managed to drag the thread down by comparing all Hibernian fans to Riordan. As much as I dont condone what he did, I think you will find the majority of Hibernian fans do not act like this on a night out.

PS try using the word Hibernian fan instead of Hobo its so last season.

I totally agree with 11 , they may not all be like him but they have more young thugs than any other team in Scotland . Hearts hating hobos , remember Oconnor , McCluskey ( making V signs at Hearts fans during a match ) , Murray , Sproule etc etc .

Reason he is doing so poorly for the celts is because he is too busy chasing the Asbo award, like all his friends have.

Hibs have the most thugs in Scotland???

If you go to the bigot brothers stadiums, all you hear is sectarian chants. If you go to Tynecastle, you still hear them. But if you go to Easter Road... when do you ever hear any?

Derek Riordan is the only player who has played for Hibs that you ever hear from in the papers.

As for players making V signs. I have seen the players playing for your mob doing the exact same thing. (I actually wonder if they know what the V sign means in lithuania)

What about the time when Paul Hartley pushed the ballboy over at Ibrox? (yes he was playing for Hearts at the time)

#31 yes of course you are totally correct the majority of Hibs fans go out and cause the trouble and crime in Edinburgh at the weekend. Spot a bit sarcasm yet?

Of course I am going to say that people posting are talking rubbish when they say this is the behaviour of a typical Hibs fan. Yes Hibs have fans that are not well behaved, as do Hearts, Rangers, Celtic and every other club in the country.

To read Hearts fans comments saying Hibs fans are solely responsible for trouble is rubbish.

Banned without being found guilty of anything by a court? Edinburgh justice at its best eh? Looks like two years in the Ferryboat and the Gunner Deek!

Still, by next week you will be wearing the glorious green on Hibernian again. Save up that first hatrick for when we pump the Lithuanians and their bungalow loving, intolerant supporters.

Poor Derek Riordan. He is the victim in all of this. He is continually picked on by menial staff in these nightclubs who are jealous of his money, good looks, 1 standard grade and the fact he is a Hibby. If these yambos just stuck to cleaning the toilets, hanging up coats and serving the more affluent members of society he'd have no problem going out and about in Edinburgh. So come on Derek. Re join the mighty greens and stick it up these jealous yambos.

Like someone else who said so, I've seen him up town and agree he cannot behave himself. He is a trouble maker who thinks he is 'untouchable' because he is a football player.

Fair enough, he is likely to attract attention as people will recongise him up town but he should be able to compose himself rather than get involved in stupid fights and arguememts.

That why he has never got a decent start at celtic, he needs to grow up.

Its really disapointing to see someone with so much talent and money be such a vile person, you would think someone in that position would better themselves. they idiots he hangs about with are worse. he should be banned from football period. Some of the things i have seen him do are really pathetic, and the way some people stick up for him is daft too. regardless of whether he kicks a football for your team or not.

The majority of the hibs squad are schemie little fcuks - that's part of the reason John 6-pac Collins lost the dressing room.

OVer a year agao now a friend of mine (who is a hibs fan) has a boozer near the ground but didn't appreciate it when most of the young-guns of hibs (including Riordan) were in my friend's pub. In fact the person had a word with a few of the them and asked them nicely to move on to another pub.

These young guys are young, dumb and full of ... er well ... is isn't full of well-rounded life experience, character and intelligence.

This problem probably isn't an exclusive one to hibs - but having a fairly low average age of squad member will not help.

I pity Mixu... and I still reckon big Yogi would have been the best manager for hibs - he would have kept the fine young schemies in their place anyway.

Its pretty funny that they are called football "professionals" - the only thing professional is that they get paid.

Many nightclubs are hypocrites. They have ex-convicts working for them on the door, thugs basically. I should know, a couple of them beat me up once, when I complained to the manager about something.

The police should clamp down on the bouncers. At least two nightclubs have closed because of them - there should be more done about the criminality of the bouncers themselves.
