Threat hangs over BA flights from the city to Heathrow

THE number of British Airways flights between Edinburgh and London's Heathrow airport could be cut, the Evening News has learned.
The shuttle service is said to be under threat because of pressure on landing slots from the more lucrative longer-haul flights at the congested Heathrow.

With the slots now trading between airlines for millions of pounds, sources in the aviation
industry have told the Evening News BA is looking to cut down on the 11 daily return flights it runs between Edinburgh and Heathrow before the end of this year.

The news comes just days after BA announced it was axing its early morning service from Glasgow to Heathrow from October.

The airline denied it had plans to cut services between Edinburgh and Heathrow but said routes were under constant review.

Business leaders warned any reduction in the number of flights to Heathrow would threaten jobs and economic growth in the Capital. Graham Birse, of the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, said: "Clearly these slots at Heathrow are at a premium and a 737 coming from Edinburgh is of less value to BA than a 747 coming from, say, Bangalore.

"But the importance of the shuttle service – particularly the early morning flights – to Edinburgh's economy cannot be underestimated.

"The financial services sector in particular relies on these flights, and if you take them away then this will definitely impact on the city's competitiveness. We need the Scottish Government to lead a much stronger defence of these landing slots."

Edinburgh Airport is now Scotland's busiest, carrying more than nine million passengers a year.

The growth has been achieved thanks to a massive expansion of direct international links from the Capital. In contrast, the number of people flying within the UK has dropped, with the airport recording a 5 per cent fall in passenger numbers on domestic services in the past year.

An airport spokesman said: "We have always recognised the strategic importance of Heathrow and its links to Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland.

"The shuttle services to London are significant economic links for Edinburgh and should not be taken for granted."

Including flights to Gatwick and London City, there are just over 300 British Airways services between London airports and Edinburgh each week.

I have long since stopped using BA to go to Heathrow. Much easier to fly BA or Scotair to London City. Even get a proper meal on the BA flight to London City, unlike the plane to Heathrow. Oh and it is quicker to get to central London and cheaper! At City you can be in Central London within 20 mins of getting off the plane.

No way will BA cut flights from Edinburgh Airport to LHR..they - BA - rely on the considerable business pax market help fill their LHR long haul flights.. Only a direct Edinburgh - Middle East/Asia flight will circumvent LHR and BAA are not likely to encourage that at Edinburg Airport any time soon.

Just drive.

That's how I will be getting there next time I go down south.

Far more convenient. Far more comfortable. No stupid security. Take what you want. No need to stick to someone else's timetable. Smoking permitted. And best of all, when you get there, you've got the car with you without having to hire a gutless, faceless, uncomfortable euro-box.

#8 exactly,

It's a complete farce in this day and age to have people flying 350 miles using one of the worst polluting ways of travelling. Mind you, not as much a farce as people travelling 200 miles to places like Leeds.

Oooh definitely. You must be right then.

Don't take these quotes from anonymous "business leaders" too seriously. They like zipping down to London on jollys.

'British' Airways, now theres an oxymoron!
The airline that claims to be the 'British' Flag carrier, couldnt give a monkeys about air travel and the requirements of air travelers from Scotland.
It was through 'British' Airways and BAA working practices of discouraging direct flights from Edinburgh and forcing people to fly through Heathrow that made heathrow the dump that it is!
If 'British' Airways were actually serious about looking after Scottish passengers, they would replace the ageing Boeing 757's that it uses on the Edinburgh to London Shuttle with a larger aircraft, such as a Boeing 767, which would enable them to reduce the number of flights , but increase the number of seats on the route. In addition discourage flying via Heathrow by having direct flights from Edinburgh to North America, Middle east and the Far East
A good model for 'British' Airways is SAS - Scandinavian Airlines System, which represents and fly's on behalf of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. All three countries have direct flights out

I would like to see the Scottish Government having discussions with British Airways as regards there future plans for future air travel out of Scotland
This is within the remit of devolved powers and would probably be fruitful for both the Scottish Government and British Airways as BA can identify for the government what they want to acheive and BA will get a better idea of what is expected.
Like it or not Air travel is intertwined with developmnent of industry and travel and subsequent investments of those areas

Short haul airlines are inefficient anyway. A few more long haul services from EDI would be more useful and a high speed rail link for domestic routes. Paris to Marseilles is further than Edinburgh to London and takes only 3 hours by train. It is also possible to route high speed rail via airports and cities.
Obvious long haul would be to Dubai or Singapore and perhaps LA os San Francisco. These hubs can then put EDI just one change away from any city on the planet.
I regularly travel between New Zealand and Longniddry. I avoid any flights via London and I now use Emirates which goes directly to either Newcastle or Glasgow with an easy train journey from each [albeit a short bus trip to Paisley for now]. If you splash out on business class they will even take you by limo up to 70 road miles from the airport at no extra charge.

I agree with 13

I travelled through not Heathrow but Gatwick two weeks ago - because I could not get a direct flight from Scotland to where I wished to go. Like Heathrow, Gatwick is now a monster of inconvenience so big that it takes fifteen minutes to walk to your departure gate. Heathrow and Gatwick cause massive traffic congestion on North to South motorways because people from other areas cannot get any significant flights from their own nearest airport. They have now expanded Heathrow and Gatwick to such a degree that they need to justify its size and expense. This means that people who do not live in the South of England area have to go to extra expense to travel to that area, paying an extra fare to get to an airport they do not want to be at.

Get some more flights coming in to Edinburgh and Glasgow airports and leave Heathrow and Gatwick to pick their passengers to their hearts' content. We would rather not be there. Leave the available flights for commuters who are unfortunate enough to have to travel to London on business and inject some new life into all the regional airports in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Start treating the people of the UK all the same and maybe there will not be such a cry for independence. The South dwellers are well known for their insularity, ignorance of other areas of the UK and downright selfishness. It is about time they were made aware of it.
