FIRST Bus is rolling out new ticketing technology on its Lothians fleet over the coming weeks.
The new Almex machines have already been trialled on services operating from the Linlithgow and Livingston depots and the machines are now being rolled out across all of its buses.

Fitted with smartcard technology, the machines work with microchi
p cards – like concessionary travel cards – and require passengers to place their cards on the ticket machine, which automatically issues the ticket.

Juliette Turner, operations director for First in Scotland East, said: "To make use of the new machines, passengers are required to place their concession card or Travelcard on to the new machine so that the chip can be 'read', but they must still show their pass to the driver to ensure the photograph is valid. Our drivers will, of course, be ready to help and advise passengers with these changes.

"We will be asking passengers to do something different when they board our buses, so it's important that we let them know exactly what will be involved. It will take a little time, though, for both passengers and drivers to get used to the new technology."

The Almex machines also contain GPS tracking technology, which means vehicles can be monitored and tracked more closely.

So about 5 years after Lothian Buses managed to bring in a single photo ID and smartcard system, First rolls out a system that requires a separate photo ID alongside the smart card.

Brilliant stuff.

See they're discriminating against mummys again. They could have used an RFID system so the don't have to rummage for a smart card whilst folding the pram and holding a baby !

The new ticket machines may 'automatically issue tickets' as long at the driver/operator inserts the correct details. I have reported several companies (both large and small) with such 'magic/fool-proof' machines to Transport Scotland for being issued tickets to (eg) the final destination of the service, rather than just 'up the road' as clearly requested! Towns where I have witnessed this include, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Motherwell, Kirkcaldy and Perth!

PS re 5 & 6) It doesn't take a 'Philadelphia lawyer' to work out which companies (in the towns mentioned) operate such ticket issuing machines!!

Here in Dalian,we have prepaid cards in a formica cover. It is just waved in front of a machine beside the driver. The machine 'beeps' and you go and sit down.No ticket is issued (think of all the trees that saves).Passengers can still drop coins or notes into the machine to.The prepaid card can be used on the LRT (light Rail, clean, fast efficient, frequent and spotlessly clean),all buses and even taxis!
Come on Scotland, where are all those innovative and inventive minds that have given the world so much in the past?
Probably too proud and stupid to borrow anything from the Chinese, are we?

First Bus is just a name. Should read last bus if you are reading in china. Last of the buses, last of the passengers, last ticket machines and last to help the public.
China truly has an advanced ticketing system and used in London with an Oyster Card, Edinburgh will have them soon, but not right away not until the wayfarer ticket machines used by the main bus company become dated.
First bus will still be years behind.
