Published Date: 01 July 2008
DRIVERS were facing long delays today at one of the city's busiest roundabouts, as work begins on the £2.2 million upgrade.
Workers closed one lane of Sheriffhall Roundabout and all its approach roads yesterday and imposed a 30mph speed limit as they began the major works.

The scheme will involve widening lanes and installing improved traffic lights and safety barrie
rs over the next three months.

Queues were longer than normal this morning and yesterday, with motorists delayed for around 30 minutes during the rush hours. Despite fears of chaos, police said no serious problems had been reported.

The Association of British Motorists has called for the roadworks to be speeded up to minimise congestion. They said more work should be carried out overnight to cut the disruption.

The work adds to traffic misery in the east of the city, with drivers also experiencing long delays at the roundabout linking Seafield Road and Portobello Road. Some motorists have reported their journey times doubling.

The busy roundabout is being replaced by traffic lights in a £2 million project, which is expected to last five months.

Around 70,000 vehicles use Sheriffhall roundabout every day. This is likely to increase when the nearby Dalkeith bypass is completed next year.

Bruce Young, of the Association of British Motorists, said: "It's quite clear that this work is essential, but I'm very concerned because Sheriffhall is very busy at the best of times. I think the important thing is to schedule the work as quickly as possible, with intensive overnight work."

Chris Wright, 26, a customer services manager, was one of thousands of drivers caught in traffic jams during yesterday's rush hour.

He said: "It did seem quite chaotic. It was even slower than usual. Once I got on the roundabout it took ages to get round. I was about 15 minutes late for work, which is a bit frustrating."

Matthew Watt, 57, of Haddington, said the new roadworks added to the misery experienced by drivers in other parts of Edinburgh. He said: "I drive into the city every day for work, and I've been stuck in traffic all morning. It seems like the whole east end of the city has been closed off."

A BEAR Scotland spokeswoman advised drivers to leave extra time for journeys. She said: "There were no major delays experienced at Sheriffhall roundabout yesterday morning.

"However, as all approaches to the roundabout and the roundabout itself are now reduced to two lanes of traffic for the majority of the works, we would advise drivers to leave plenty of time for their journeys."

`A BEAR Scotland spokeswoman advised drivers to leave extra time for journeys.

`She said: "... as all approaches to the roundabout and the roundabout itself are now reduced to two lanes of traffic for the majority of the works, we would advise drivers to leave plenty of time for their journeys, consider alternative routes and modes of transport and plan their trip in advance.'

The City Bypass is not just a commuter route - much of the traffic is passing through on a main north/south Euroroute so is unlikely to be able to anticipate the need to "leave plenty of time for their journeys, consider alternative routes and modes of transport."

Or does she think it realistic to park the car at Hermiston Gait, take a bus to Newcraighall and "pick up" another car to continue the journey south?

Why is traffic likely to increase when the A68 bypass opens? As I've said before traffic using this road will have the option of avoiding Sherriffhall altogether by using the A1 instead - at present A68 traffic has no alternative but to go through SH.

Talk about inflation and cost over-runs!

Last week it was only going to cost £2 million - this week it's going to cost £22 million

Shut the road down
Install a tram line

No matter what minor upgrades they make just now, It needs an underpass like the Gyle roundabout( and even that is swamped now with traffic queue's ),not a few grand spent on a useless improvment

Absolutely great timing of the roadworks at Sheriffhall what with the tram works, Portobello and all the roadowrks that we are being subjected to all at the same time. Edinburgh is an utter nightmare to get round.

A bus from the centre of Edinburgh to Musselburgh took well over an hour last night because of all the stuff.

"Why is traffic likely to increase when the A68 bypass opens?"

Build more roads get more traffic - simple, very simple.

Remember what Musselburgh traffic was like before they built the bypass?

Bit like it is now really.

MBP meant more people were willing to commute to Edinburgh from further away in East Lothian. Same will happen soon from Midlothian/Borders.

Same will soon happen

Why 30mph?

It always used to be 50mph around road works.

[from article] Matthew Headington: "I drive into the city every day for work, and I've been stuck in traffic all morning."

Excellent news. And do you drive in alone? In which case you are one of the selfish people who have made this disruption necessary and let us hope you are seriously inconvenienced.

If you feel aggrieved, contact Bruce Young of the Association of British Motorists. He'll sort you out.

Regarding the roadworks - they are the worse I have ever seen in Edinburgh - I have never known so many roadworks happening at the same time. Of course the SNP/Libdem council are to blame. 18 months ago everyone was blaming the labour administration - but things are now far worse - so the current administration must take the blame. All those clowns that voted for this SNP/Libdem administration should hang their head in shame - remember - it is no use moaning about them now - you wanted them - you made your bed - now lie in it. Roll on the next election!!

The council should be fired en mass just as a warning to other councils round the country that they can muck us about only so much.

This council has gone about deliberately creating congestion so they can spend millions 'dealing' with the 'problem' ... not to mention punishing the citizens for dareing to vote against their beloved new tax - the congestion charge ...

They are sickening, little folk with nothing better to do and this is an absolute example of how government should not be run. Everything but the common good is at the core ...

10 - that is easy ... so they can stick a tax camera to catch the arch criminal motorists who do 40mph ! We will soon see speed limits of 5mph ... and more tax cameras so you won't be able to walk at a decent pace without being fined ...

#15,
exactly, i made the mistake of popping into town yesterday and had forgotten about the stupid garden party. First I knew was people being turned back at the roundabout at the east end of holyrood park......then it was complete chaos trying to get anywhere from there. Not to mention the fact i had just been sitting in complete chaos on Willowbrae road due to the effing roadworks after deciding kings road would probably be worse.
What is it with this city, who decides that:

1..all roadworks on the east side of the city will be done at the same time, causing chaos every day for months for people just trying to get to work.

2..decide to close an artery route around the city centre (holyrood park) just so a parasite can host a garden party whilst all the chaos in #1 is going on.

3..decide to do all of this whilst the city centre is being slowly redeveloped into a bomb site to build the tram line that will replace a perfectly good bus service, costing hundreds of millions.

4..then decide that whilst the commuter routes are virtually unuseable digging up one of the busiest roundabouts in the country is a good idea.

These roadworks could have been done 6 months apart resulting in them not clashing with each other but no doubt nobody thought of this in the council because it might have required half a brain. Then they ask why nobody uses the shops in town anymore, why the f*ck do you think!!

oh yeah,
5..decide that closing off the slip road at newcraighall whilst all this is going on would be sensible..resulting in everyone that usually uses that route being forced into the roadworks...

are they just trying to put people off using the A1 so that they can change it into a massive tram line.

"Workers closed one lane of Sheriffhall Roundabout and all its approach roads yesterday..."

is it me or does that read as if all the roads going to the roundabout where shut, meaning that no-one could access and use the roundabout?

Where is the Borders rail link??? Why dont stupid drivers get in a bus instead? Or get a bike?
