Roadworks chaos is 'never ending'

Published Date: 03 July 2008
SHOPKEEPERS have hit out at "never ending" roadworks after gas workers started digging up a Canonmills street just three weeks after finishing work on the same spot.
Traders on Brandon Terrace thought they had seen the back of Scotland Gas Networks (SGN) when overrunning gas mains replacement works finished early last month.

But they were horrified to see the utility firm set up again last week to start a new
13-week project on the same section of the street.

And Canonmills businesses and residents face further roadworks misery this autumn when Scottish Water starts to replace water mains on Brandon Terrace as soon as the SGN work is finished.

SGN today would not be drawn on why its second project did not start immediately after the first works, but added that it was essential.

However, traders in Brandon Terrace today warned they are really suffering from the traffic diversions. Johnny Bacigalupo, who runs Napier Interiors, said: "It just seems like this whole area has been under siege from roadworks – it is never ending.

"Just when you think it is all over, another lot appear and the most frustrating thing is the pace they work at.

"You see them just standing around, there are seven of them at a time just looking into these holes and not seemingly doing much.

"We've had our parking spaces totally wiped out and nobody seems to give these utility firms the kick up the backside they need to finish these works."

The original gas works in Brandon Terrace started in March and were meant to last five weeks.

However, a lack of specialist parts meant there was a month-long hiatus on the work while SGN waited for the parts to come back into stock.

Jane McGregor, co-owner of keys and locks firm Edina, said: "It is incredibly frustrating to see them back in our street again.

"There just seems to be no end to it and we get next to no information about what is going on and why it is happening. We have noticed that things are quieter because we rely on a lot of passing trade but nobody can get parked."

The Scottish Water work scheduled for Brandon Terrace will see the utility firm use the same trenches dug by SGN so the road will not be resurfaced and then dug up again.

Inverleith councillor Lesley Hinds said: "It is incredibly frustrating – there just never seems to be any joined-up thinking with these utility works. Although all of these firms are signed up to these considerate contractor agreements there never seem to be any real enforcement action by the council if things overrun."

A spokeswoman for Scotland Gas Networks said: "Although we understand the frustration of local residents and businesses, this is an essential investment."

Councillor Phil Wheeler, the city's transport leader, said: "With development occurring across the city, utility companies have to improve and upgrade their infrastructure to allow for the additional pressures of serving more homes and businesses.

"We do try to work with the utilities to minimise problems and we have a concordat in place which makes them more accountable for the work they undertake."

• Gas main replacement work on Holyrood Road is expected to be completed by next week – ending ten months of works on the busy city centre road.

"Never ending" means, um, something that never ends.

Do these businesses honestly think that, say, 23,000 years from now Scottish Gas Networks will still be digging up their street? Or that, 40,000,000 billion years from now, when human beings no longer walk the earth, there will still be a man sat a Scottish Water van, eating his lunch of a plastic carton and listening to Real Radio?

What gets me is when you see roadworks but nobody actually WORKING on them. You know, when construction crews turn up at 9ish, knock off at 12ish, then stop for a a brew-up then head away about 4. I don't see why the Council cannot have service contracts with all the major Utility firms that server Edinburgh and Districts. For instance work should continue 24/7 until it is finished. Think about it, a few nights inconvenience but over in half the time of normal roadworks or the normal stop&go roadworks and weeks of disruption?

I would go for a few nights of broken sleep myself!

There are few people who actually enjoy living in Edinburgh these days. The town is nothing short of a disaster

Utility companies can do what they like and the Councils have little power over them.

IT's the LAW:

It really is pathetic that Edinburgh is constantly littered with these works.

The major problem is that no-one seems to be accountable. The workmen don't care, as stated, there's usually 7 watching and one (the junior) grafting. These loafers need the whip cracked a few times

A system must be introduced whereby a generic timetable for standard works is drawn up and fines imposed on companies that overshoot these deadlines.

Edinburgh's roads are at present 3rd world (in fact whilst recently in Cambodia I was more impressed with theirs), they are a mass of patches and shoddy botched repairs.

This SNP/Libdem council are totally pathetic - roadworks are the worse I have ever seen in Edinburgh - and with no coordination. Of course - I saw this coming and didn't vote for these inept idiots - unfortunately the clowns in this city thought they were a safe bet - and voted for them. You only have yourself to blame - you made your bed - now lie in it. Roll on the next election!!

Those of you who voted for an SNP/Lib Dem Council are the real culprits .
LibDem's wouldn't know a policy if it hit them between the eyes
SNP happy to get " job and a company car"
As for Jenny Dawe - words fail me I'm afraid !!!

Not necessarily:
a) without knowing the distance between the tree and Jerusalem you can't make a comparison between skin and rubber. The tree might have been right next to where he was going.
b) the tree might have been in one of those wee planter things. On wheels. So it went with him.
Nobody knows.

Roadworks without a tramway construction, never, shurely shome mishtake.
We all know that tramways are the only cause of roadworks so don't blame the poor old gas board.
23

Mr Fuzzy,

This happens everywhere in Edinburgh - no sooner than a single stretch of road has been resurfaced, that the utility companies are back digging up the road to replace damaged sewer lines, gas lines and water mains. With the latter, they will repair one burst water main only to have the next one burst within a month.

On any bus route there is always at least one set of roadworks reducing traffic flow to a single lane.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just build underground conduits so that the pipes could be repaired/inspected without having to dig up the entire road?

Ian down under,

Kawerau 04/07/2008 01:04:35
#25 You are right. amazingly if the opportunity to put the tramway underground in the city centre had been taken the services could have been put in tunnels at the same time. Imagine if you wanted to upgrade a pipe all you would need to do is go into the tunnel with the pipes and fix it. If you look at the railways they put their cables for signals etc in concrete boxes with lids.

It's all very well you bloons above making light of this but as a Taxi driver in Edinburgh I am cracking up.It doesn't matter which way I take a fare- there will be roadworks. They should all be made to finish jobs before starting other jobs.Whoever is in charge of this should be given the sack. Why start a job before making sure you have all the parts needed to complete it?
It's only a matter of time before everyone goes mad-fuel costs going up-gas electric and shopping going up.No wonder its hard to see anyone smile going about Edinburgh.!
26

why can't I use my own name???,

musselburgh 04/07/2008 07:27:40
The whole city is a ruddy mess! I've never seens it like this, for so long. The taxi driver further up is correct: anyway you try to get through Edinburgh, you'll hit a diversion.

Do what Forrest Gump did? Start running...saves on rising fuel costs, is good for the planet, beats the endless roadworks & gets you fit...

NB: If you work in Edinburgh but live in Dundee running may not be a good idea & always seek advice from your doctor before starting exercise...
