WHAT is it? Thermage is a safe, non-invasive and non-surgical facial rejuvenation using a laser. It's clinically proven to tighten and contour the skin.
Where? Celeste Beauty Spa (0131-221 1900), Leven Street. London celebrity cosmetic doctor, Rita Rakus, flies into Edinburgh once a month to perform the wrinkle treatment, which can take between 20 minutes and two hours. A session starts at £2000. Con
sultations are free.

How does it work? The laser heats the mid collagen-rich dermis layers of the skin and the deep subcutaneous layers of the skin, stimulating the dermis and renewing collagen. The technology safely heats the skin's underlayers and the web of collagen, which is said to cause immediate tightening as well as improved tone and texture. Improvements continue and become more noticeable for four to six months following treatment, due to new collagen growth. The result is tighter, smoother skin.

Was it worth it? It's not painless and you certainly do feel it, but our tester said the results made it worth it. "My skin was ageing and the tell-tale signs were lines and wrinkles around my eyes and forehead, and I was starting to get jowls.

"It wasn't a comfortable procedure but there is an anaesthetic to numb the pain and it isn't any worse than a tattoo. I can only describe it as feeling like getting cigarette burns followed by an ice pack all over the face.

"But it was worth it. Immediately, I could see the results and my face had been instantly lifted. My eyebrows and forehead were especially lifted. And, within two to three months, the contour lines around my face disappeared."

Dr Rita Rakus will be at Celeste on Saturday August 10.
