Published Date: 16 November 2007
JOHN COLLINS again raised his concerns today over the risk of Hibs striker Steven Fletcher suffering from "burn-out" after the Easter Road star was pencilled in for two international matches in the space of four days.
Fletcher is set to start tomorrow's European Under-21 Championship qualifying match in Slovenia but will immediately report for duty on his return with Alex McLeish's B squad for a challenge game against the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday. No other player has been asked to do so and today Hibs boss Collins insisted it should have been a case of "one or the other" for the 20-year-old, who has hardly had a break from football over the past 30 months.

Collins has repeatedly voiced his fears for Fletcher, who spent the summer of 2006 playing in the under-19 European Championships in Poland and July of this year turning out in all three of Scotland's matches in the under-20 World Cup in Canada.

On top of that, Fletcher played 43 matches for Hibs last season plus various preparatory games for the World Cup, including flying to the west coast of Canada in March to face the host nation twice, which led Collins to question the wisdom of such a gruelling trip.

As a result, Collins stated his intention to protect Fletcher at the beginning of this season, using the youngster sparingly in the opening matches. Fletcher, however, has become a key member of Collins' side and with seven goals is Hibs' top scorer.

But, since the season started, Fletcher has also been a constant member of Scotland's under-21 side, playing against the Czech Republic, Denmark and Lithuania with only an injury preventing him travelling to face the Netherlands last month.

However, Scotland under-21 coach Maurice Malpas has made it clear he intends to use Fletcher in a three-pronged attack in Slovenia tomorrow as the young Scots battle to keep their Euro hopes alive.

Fletcher will then return to prepare for Tuesday night's B friendly at Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium at a time when Collins feels he would be better resting ahead of Hibs' crunch SPL clash with Dundee United next weekend.

He said: "To be honest, Steven needs a rest. Having been at the World Cup he's hardly had a break and, to me, to put him in one squad or the other rather than both would be more sensible.

"There's no doubt he risks burn-out. We try to protect him as much as possible but Scotland seem to be using him at every opportunity.

"It is something of a double-edged sword. It's great Steven is being recognised and is stepping up through the various levels of international football with his aim being of playing for the full squad one day. But, on the other hand, he needs a break like everyone else.

"He played through the summer and the summer of last year and he could have done with a few days off."

Poor wee lad, Perhaps if he had to work seven, twelve hour shifts down a pit he could moan. Players these days are just big girls.

Steven Fletcher = good player = next to leave = more additions to training ground = happy wittle hibbies = ~8o)

And after your witty riposte of yesterday too.
If Fletcher leaves, he leaves. Same as any other player. Difference is we have had and sold many other "great" strikers over the years. You may be too young to remember peter marinello, joe baker, joe mcbride. They were all sold and more recently O'Connor and Riordan predictions of doom and gloom have come and gone but the team is still here joint 2nd.

Incidentally Bobby Prentice, great winger. The one man he never got the better of though was John Brownlie

Must have to agree with #1

Footballers have it far to easy, they train for a few hrs a day, and moan when they have to play 2 or 3 games in a week!

I personally feel these players should be able to play 3 games a week, 52 weeks of the year, its not that exhausting to run around for an hour and a half is it? Or am i just super fit?

whether you like it or not, Collins does have a point. Most players are given a bit of time off at least once a year, even the young ones. Fair enough Fitba players aren't exactely hard done by when it comes to a fair days graft, but anyone doing the same job, day in, day out, every week for ny on three years is definitely going to be reaching the end of they're tether. From JC's point of view all this means is another month or so of playing him sparingly. If only to ensure he is even capable of putting in the same kinda performance for Hibs that he has every time he has featured for us this season, let alone continuing to show improvement in his game, which is something all fans of Scottish football should be encouraging if not demanding...
Besides which, as painful as it must be to JJ52, THE BPRENTICE, and percy (like the lack of shouting in your name btw), he is in constant demand because he is a very, very good player, even with just the right foot for standing on...

Surely it's "poor wee lad - maybe he should try spending 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, emailing online message boards and checking out the jugs on the new Aussie temp"

4. greenanwhite1 - which riposte of yesterday are you refering to? You've lost me on that one.

I started going to matches in the early eighties when my pocket money could afford it so I did see peter marinello, he jumped over every tackle possible when he helped the jambos in their 1st division crusades.

I agree with you that players come and players go ............but so does SPL positions...whether its joint 2nd/third OR 6th/7th at the end of the day. Rrightly or wrongly, people only remember the really bad defeats (e.g. I saw grown men cry after watching Hearts get beat by forfar in the cup) or the SC and League wins.

I got Bobby Prentice's autograph on a bus while it was driving down the bridges in 1973 (when I was 7) and saw him playing against Everton in the Texaco cup that night, great memories of a great winger. I'll bet he didn't get much cash out of the game either. I can't blame the current players taking the money and running. At least Scott Brown did it the right way - you have to look at the likes of Paul Ritchie, Deek Riordan and Andy Webster to see what not to do.

Silence of the Yams,

Webster was garbage anyway.

Riordan just doesnt fit into Celtic.

sorry mate can't remember. I just thought it was really funny.

speaking of strikers I used to watch Joe Mc Bride (snr). he was a wee fat barrel but he knew where the goals were. Likewise alan gordon. I remember the eddie turnbull saying when he signed him that he was good in the air and quite good on the ground also. b******S he was. he was good in the air but absolutely p**h on the ground.
Yes positions come and go and the only position that matters (apart from a 69!) is the position at the end of the season

# 12. Silence of the Yams

Webster is a two faced backstabber and will get everything he deserves, just like Severin did when he turned against Hearts in favour of Rangers.

If Riordan doesn't fit into Celtic why is he there? Wasn't he taken on because of his goal scoring record. Maybe Strachan isn't in charge at Darkheid, as the press have already suggested.

Gung-Ho .,

If he brings in more millions or stays fletch is another from the conveher belt at easter road,
football has become a business,
hibs are doing it correct,
hibs debt ?
hearts debt ?
hibs position in spl, ?
hearts position in spl, ?

17

Aghast,

16/11/2007 18:10:01

perhaps Collins should rest him if he feels so strongly about the amount of games hes playing. Country before club every time....

18

mon-the-hertz,

16/11/2007 19:20:48

Fletcher's a top player - definitely the best performer in the first half in the derby but didn't get to do much once Mikey Stewart instucted the tactical changes at half time! He's like a Callum Elliot who can also score.
Would there really be someone in line to come and fill his boots if he left Easter Road?

19
