HIBS boss John Collins insisted today he has no intention of taking Steven Fletcher out of the firing line and backed the young striker to continue his rich vein of form for the club despite speculation over his future.
Talks over a contract extension have reached a stalemate in recent weeks although Collins has publicly stated his desire to hold on to his top goalscorer this season.

However, Fletcher's agent, Scott Fisher, has hinted that his client may have to look elsewhere should he not receive a vastly-improved deal.

The youngster, who has been in sparkling form this term, is tied to the Easter Road outfit until 2011 but, after six goals in 11 starts, Hibs are hopeful of securing him on a longer, improved contract.

Fletcher is regarded as one of the hottest properties in the country and just last week made his Scotland B debut against the Republic of Ireland.

There are concerns, though, that speculation over where he will be playing his football long term could affect his displays on the pitch.

But Collins is confident that Fletcher can handle the attention and has vowed to continue playing him as Hibs look to continue their impressive start to the campaign.

"I spoke to Fletch the other day and he's perfectly happy at the club and wants to stay," said Collins.

"I've no thoughts at all about taking him out the firing line." Collins also revealed that his squad have a clean bill of health ahead of Sunday's trip to face Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Midfielder Guillaume Beuzelin has recovered from a niggling injury that saw him limp off against Gretna earlier this month and is in contention to return to the starting XI after missing last weekend's 2-2 draw with Dundee United. And striker Clayton Donaldson, who suffered a broken finger recently, is also back in the running for a place in Collins' side after taking part in training this week.

The availability of all his players leaves Collins with the sort of selection headache that every manager wants and the Easter Road manager has challenged his fringe players to force their way back into contention.

"We have every single player fit and don't have one injury in the whole squad," said the delighted Collins.

"Clayton has trained all week and is fine now while Boozy is also available.

"We can only play ten outfield players at any time and we have a first-team squad of 24 players fit just now so somebody will be disappointed.

"That's part and parcel of football though and it's up to them to get back in."

Another contract signed and month's down the line the agent is stirring up trouble by going public demanding an improved deal.

Fletch maybe having a decent season so far, but can you do it season after season? Maybe come back this time next season and we'll consider the deal....and maybe have tried a bit more with your standing leg!

Fletcher should be allowed to carry-on regardless,
he is good player, should be allowed to become even better, keep up the good work hibs fc.

It's a long way in playing terms between now and January(not that he will even be going IMO) with a lot of points to pick up, good to hear JC is confident that his game wont be affected. Roll on Sunday and lets hope the dons do well tonight but are maybe a little tired come sunday;-)

Why contacts anyway? They seem to to be utterly unenforcible and meaningless nowadays for both players and managers.I'm coming to hate myself for loving fitba.

7

Pedantic_Hibee,

29/11/2007 12:51:03

Great that the full squad is injury free. A lot of the summer work put in by Roger Propos is obviously having an effect on the laddies.

Excellent news, and great to hear that JC is continuing to utilise his services every month or so as well.

8

Kevin,

29/11/2007 12:51:08

I am of the view that a new contract shouldn't even be discussed at the moment as he still has 3years plus left on his current one, however, you can understand his frustration when you think that Alan O'Brien and Makalamby are the highest earners at the club. He gives us a hell of a lot more than they do!

9

Silence of the Yams,

9. O'brien might still come good, needs games. Makalamity needs coaching on high balls. Why that dick Marshall hasnt been sacked god only knows.

Just give the lad a an extra year, better dough and a good goal bonus (twice is much if he scores with his right peg!)

Really cant see what the problem is here.

He does seem the type to just get on with it though, think JC will be right on that his mentality will be fine.

Should get the new deal concluded asap though. Have lessons not been learned?

13

Yorkina,

29/11/2007 13:09:35

This is typical of what we get from Hibs. Half truths and fantasies. I would expect Fletcher to be ready to play at the weekend. JC has no thoughts about playing him despite the speculation? Big deal.

The main point here is that JC and Hibs admit there is speculation. Do they realise what speculation means? Do they realise that Hibs own fans are part of that? That it means that we have to play at guessing games as so often before.

Do they sometimes think that they may owe the fans something in these situations? Fans without whom Hibs might as well pack up and cease business.

Given the press reports, did anyone at Hibs think "Perhaps we should let the fans know the truth" "Tell them whether Fletchers agent was telling the truth" Let them know if we really did insult Fletcher with a very poor offer."

In other words treat the fans as part of the club instead of always leaving them to the mercy of hired hacks like Keith Jackson. In other words treat the fans with respect.

Consider this. We all invest in the Hibs dream. Hibs are a significent part of our lives. We pay the money, gladly, that Hibs need to exist. Should we be treated as if this counts for nothing? I don't support Motherwell or Gretna or Dundee United, but I might as well when it comes to getting information from my club.

So, come on Hibs, lt us know what'shappening at our club with our players and we won't have to be relying on OF newspapers and OF reporters telling us what's going on. We should be getting some protection from you.

14

15

Hibby Gal,

29/11/2007 13:23:19

Don't agree that the intimate details of players wages etc should be in the public domain. Just because their job is in the public eye they are still entitled to privacy on personal matters. The customers who come into my work in effect pay my wages but I certainly don't want my next wage increase discussed in the Evening News etc.

16

glasvegas hibs,

29/11/2007 13:50:45

no 14 I think they have answered it, maybe not as clear cut as some people would like but then get a seat on the board if you feel you should know more about the goings on at HFC. If a players agent is making all the waves and the player says he is happy to the manager, should he have to run to the press every day to say this. Knowing that they are in control as contracted for a few years meaning A. going nowhere or B. Big money either way is good news in footballing business.

I'm more interseted in who is coming in than going out, thats the way forward and upwards. Time will tell.

17

stanton4,

29/11/2007 14:12:24

that is extremely naive glasvegas .... This is a replica of what we had last year. Never in my wildest nightmare did I expect the transfer out of (virtually ) every decent player we had. Can you be sure that we will still have Fletcher Murphy or to a lesser extent Boozy come the end of january.
I fear for us if both of the weegie baskits qualify.

I wish Yorkina was on the HFC board. We might get a bit more bottle............

18

Hobo Harry,

#14 Yorkina. Finished with our rant then? Or are we still a grumpy-head? More inclined to think you are a Jambo on a very poor attempt at a wind-up.

19

Yorkina,

29/11/2007 14:20:08

Hibby Gal
I don't want to know how much Fletcher has been offered or what his wages are currently. I do need to know if Hibs have made him a fair offer, given that he is our top scorer, one of our best players and shows all the potential of being a great player.

Glasvegas Hibs
Tell me, did Fletcher say "Boss, I'm perfectly happy at the cub and I want to stay" or " Boss I'm perfectly happy at the club and I want to stay, if the terms are right."

Why do we have to be left in the dark. Why is it that every statement we hear from JC or Hibs always begs more questions. I refuse to believe that it is beyond their wits to issue a statement clarifying the issue for all reasonable supporters. We are being given inormation, but by outside agencies who do not have Hibs interests at heart.

I shouldn't need to be on the board to learn about the future of Hibs players. Next time they ask us to renew our season tickets they will talk about the exciting future we can look forward to with our team. This makes the players future a legitmate matter of interest and I'm surprised that any Hibs supporter is content with the way we are treated. Or do you accept that the Hibs can ask us to look to the teams' future without having an interest in what that team will be.

Excellent comments.
I too wouldn't want my finances dissected in the evening paper for anybody that wants to know.
Fletcher HAS said to JC he's not unhappy and HAS said that he hasn't asked for a transfer. That should really be enough.
I understand your point #9 and I am not dismissing it. Frequently in the past, supporters HAVE had to read in the paper what was going on. I suspect however that this has more to do with mischief making by the agents than the players themselves.
Speaking of agents I notice the agent involved in this corruption scandal is an old favourite of ours. Willie McKay. The same guy that whispered in the ear of Brown and Thompson around the same time last year. I know people are supposedly innocent until proven guilty but I sincerely hope that scumbucket gets his just desserts.

21

Hibby,

Highlands 29/11/2007 14:24:51

#9 Who told you that O'brien and Maka are the highest paid at Easter Road? And if you know this, how much more do you know about players' wages?
The more likely truth is that statements like yours are all part of the rumour mill that is Scottish Football and are invariably wrong!

22

R. Burns,

Above Hearts 29/11/2007 14:28:24

Regarding the naive comments about players contract being worthless; have a think about the value of these:
Scott Brown - £4.4m
Steven Whittaker - £2.0m
Kevin Thomson - £2.0m
Garry O - £1.5m

Get a grip guys - contracts are worth a fortune to Hibs. Players will continue to be sold but it's all part of the upward spiral.

The only thing that bothers me about contracts is that our players walk for nothing if we don't have them.

23

Yorkina,

29/11/2007 14:35:10

Hobo Harry
Just seen your comment.

Very good. You've caught me out. I'm a Jambo, right enough.

I really despair. You can be bothered coming on to this forum but can't be bothered saying anything sensible.

I don't post comments very often as usually, by the time I get home the thread has been polluted by the Gorgie mob with their inane abuse. I'm off work today and thought to offer a contribution (or a rant as you would have it) secure in the knowledge that I was talking to Hibs supporters.

Maybe the post was too long for you. I apologise. On the other hand, Hibby Gal, Glasvegas Hibs and Stanton 4 coped just fine. Take your time, read the whole post and if you have aythig to say, let's hear it. But, no abuse eh, leave that for the evening.

24

glasvegas hibs,

29/11/2007 15:01:25

Stanton 4 I think it is naive to think that in this day and age players will not one day decide to listen to the agent over club over t&c's of contract. We lost a vast amount of players in a short period there mainly due to greed but what can a club do in this situation except get the best deal they can from it. when we have stalled before on transfers and ended up with nothing then who do we blame, yes the board and so on it goes.

Considering what has just happened and we are still sitting pretty at top half of table with a good bank balance and in a positioon to cover such loss of players then really we should have faith in the board and management through these times.

Yorkina. Dont have a clue what exactly was said except both player and manager have indicated that the player doesn't want to move unlike past where transfer requests have been put in by player, maybe this shows that we value the player more than potential buyers at this time.

25

Yorkina,

What a great post. I and I'm sure the others who were contributing to this small debate am so glad you have chosen to rid us all of our naivety and explain the real world to us.

Never mind that it missed the point by a mile. Never mind that it contained schoolboy contradictions. We are just so grateful to be lectured by a pompous, patronising pedant as you have proved time and again to be.

#24 Yorkina. I've offered plenty on this site in the past as some will tell you, but I did not recognise your name at all. You mention "sensible comment" and yet your first post was a rant and your reply so full of sacrcasm to deem it unworthy of merit.

How else do you think Hibs can give out info except through the press? It seems to me that JC is continually in the papers these days, including talking about the Fletcher situation, and I'm not sure what else he can do.

27

Yorkina

I do not think yo're naive or misguided. i think you have a a valid point. However as I alluded to and also N.O in his own churlish manner is that mostly it is the agents stirring things up. They leak it to the press because they know they can perhaps engineer a move for their client thus earn some money. Hibs have always said (rather frustratingly at times I agree) that when there was something to say then they would say it. Was it not that scumbucket Willie Mckay who started spredaing all these rumours about Brown and Thompson last year? The guy is an affront to his profession. Why should the club react to lies and misinformation spread by agents trying to make money for themselves?

28

Kevin,

29/11/2007 15:24:09

No 22. The information I was given was from someone who works within the club, he didn't tell me what they were on but I tend to trust what he was saying. I'm not saying its gospel but he has been a reliable source of info in the past.

29

Yorkina,

29/11/2007 15:38:31

Hobo Harry. Well you'll recognise the name next time.

Greenanwhite1
You have a good point...why should hibs respond every time an agent runs to th press with lies? You are right, they shouldn't but when the speculation grows I still feel they could clarify the matter a bit better than they do at the moment. They should understand that the Hibs fans have a legitimate concern.

Your' also right about Willie McKay. Shame he's been released but I hope it's not the end of the matter.

30

Hibby,

Highlands 29/11/2007 15:55:01

Kevin,as I said, rumour! Even if it came from some laddie in the ticket office or wherever

31

Greenanwhite1,

29/11/2007 16:15:06

Players come and players go and the club carries on. We ARE a selling club because we don't have a Russkie who wants to invest his (legitimate or otherwise) millions into the club. Before all the scumbos start chuntering on about Tom Farmer he's always said he wasn't interested in making regular investments or get involved in the running of the club. But at least we have players that clubs WANT to sign. We can't stop Fletcher from moving to another club, that's his decision. All we can do if he decides that he wants to move (and other than the agent stirring things up there's no reason to suggest that he does) is to try and make a few quid on the deal. We hope that goes towards re-investment in the squad but due to our financial restraints it's not always possible. If the club were to be sold tomorrow then we vwould be a much more attractive proposition for any investor than the financial vacuum that is HOM.

JAL to Easter Road,

Regarding wages being in the evening post--if you play for a professional football club, aren't you putting yourself up for public inspection a bit? I mean, look at how we all sit here and talk about them all day (and night) as if we know them personally. I'd think that when you sign on for professional football, you probably need to take what comes with that: your personal details get known. Pretty soon, you find that you have your own page on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Fletcher_footballer)

#25 N.O.--I agree. This kind of article is spurred purely by the agent: "However, Fletcher's agent, Scott Fisher, has hinted that his client may have to look elsewhere should he not receive a vastly-improved deal."

Back to your comment that I took exception too...We all know that the Agents are at the back of the unrest. I thought that was understood. We all recognise negotiatons when we see them.

The main contradiction in the process you outlined is this: The player, being fully part of the process is suddenly unsettled. Are you saying he suddenly loses all understanding of the negotiating process he was the central figure of?

A couple of weeks later my home name of Yorkian changed to Yorkina. I assume as a result of some housekeeping by the forum administrators.
