HIBS boss John Collins breathed a sigh of relief today after David Murphy was declared fit to face SPL basement outfit Gretna on Saturday.
The classy full-back, described by Collins as "Mr Consistency," had been struggling after picking up a painful rib injury in the dying seconds of Sunday's pulsating Edinburgh derby.

Murphy was caught by a rash tackle from Hearts striker Calum Elliot, an action which brought the Tynecastle star a yellow card, and was unable to train in the early part of the week.

But Murphy dispelled any worries over his availability for the trip to Fir Park by rejoining his team-mates for yesterday's session which he completed with no problems.

Collins said: "David took a whack in the ribs when Elliot caught him. His ribs were bruised and, having suffered that sort of injury myself, I know how painful it can be. Thankfully he's fine now and will be available for the weekend."

Winger Filipe Morais will also be in Collins' thoughts after suffering a similar injury to that of Murphy, the former Millwall star having revealed he took painkillers during half-time against Hearts to continue playing.

And Morais' determination to remain on the park delighted Collins who said: "The boys are desperate to get on the park, they want to keep playing and retain their place, no-one wants to miss any games."

One player certain to miss out again this weekend, however, is Moroccan striker Abdessalam Benjelloun.

Although Benji, who hasn't played a first-team game since the beginning of September, has been making optimistic noises about his prospects of facing Gretna, Collins insisted it was far too soon to be talking of a return to top-flight action.

Hibs will travel to Gretna's temporary home with a timely reminder from Collins of how the SPL new boys almost caused a shock when they took a two-goal lead during the first meeting of the season between the clubs in Edinburgh.

Since then Davie Irons' side have slumped to the bottom of the table, six points adrift of Inverness Caledonian Thistle - but Collins insisted that situation shouldn't fool anyone. He said: "Gretna are fighting for survival, they are desperate for points but they have put in some decent performances. They have beaten Dundee United and were within five minutes of defeating Celtic the other week.

"Gretna were unlucky not to get something that day but they have proved they can raise their game. Unfortunately for them they are finding that when you are in their position the breaks always seem to go against you.

"But I am sure they will be fighting, doing everything they can to get those breaks going in their favour.

"I'll certainly be reminding my players of what happened earlier in the season at Easter Road, Gretna going 2-0 up although we put in a fantastic final 24 minutes to win 4-2. We'll be giving them every respect and I'll be warning the boys that they'll under- estimate Gretna at their peril."

#1 I think quite the contrary, you can tell Benji and JC have a very good rapport.

If you read recent reports, i.e yesterday, JC asked the moroccan FA not to play benji.

Either ignorant or a yam at the windup me thinks.

Could do with Benji boy back ASAP. Really missed that bit of creativity in the final 3rd of the pitch IMO. He looked AMAZING in pre-season aswell. Everything he hit found the back of the net. Must be frustrating for the lad.

Rubbish.

If you bother reading anyhting you'll have already heard that Hibs told Morocco he wasn't fit, they bandaged him up and played him anyway, and he came back worse.

If they didn't get on why does Ccollins go out of his way to allow them to repect their beliefs and why did he stay each night to train with them on their special programme?

The Moth

Yes, I have been very impressed with Morais. He has always looked a threat when playing and is only 21.

Benji was not up to standard in the reserve game against St Mirren on Tuesday. But then again, few of the established first team players were. O'Brien put in a good shift but his final ball does not seem to suit the forwards and the defenders inevitably clear easily. Benji looked exasperated for most of the time he was on the field, either with the indignity of playing in a reserve game, or with his own inability to step up his performance.

The team actually suffered from the introduction of the first team squad players and their recent run of good result came to a halt. The coaches tried a back 3 with Campbell as a midfield players or wing back. Clearly he was out of postion and thus the defence was easily penetrated. McCormack had a poor game and thus the enterprising St Mirren team popped in 3 goals rather easily.

David Murphy is, over the full season, the most accomplished wing back in the SPL and that includes players like Hutton at Rangers who has come on a ton this last 12 months or so. We must give credit to Driver for an outstanding performance on Sunday. Good move by the Hearts coaching gurus to play him on the right where he could:

a) Keep Murphy occupied
b) Cut in from the wing using his stronger left foot.

Hibs tried that with Morais on the left to expose the limitations of Neilson and Fletcher on the right so that he could cut in onto his stronger left foot.

Morais is a good solid player and worth his place in the team. If he plays on Saturday, I would expect him to score against Gretna. He gives his all and we Hibs fans like that kind of player.

#7 Jeezo, driver got past murph like twice? Maybe 3 times in the whole game? Talk about jumping on a bandwagon. And I cant actually remember driver beating him one on one, always a case of murph struggling to get back into position once one of his team mates lost the ball.

Behave yourself.

No i wasn't at the wind up, just a thought.. so don't know why u would say i'm a yam when if u check any of the other posts i have done they are all on hibs. I just thought its strange how he can play for the Country and not us!

I watch hibs each week and believe me i'm no yam.

So guys instead of jumping down my throat, respect other peoples thoughts. I do agree its good he was training late with collins but i just found it weird that he can play for them while unfit? who plays a player who is not fit?

Well, Fredster, I'll accept that you're not a yam but I'd have to say that Rosco called it right; your take on the Collins/benji relationship does suggest that you are either a young laddie who can't really weigh things up, or you are as Rosco says a bit ignorant of all the facts.......................We'll give you the benefit and assume you're a young laddie!

I can accept that what you are saying although wrong is a genuine point and not the ramblings of a yam or daft wee laddie. The point is national sides can and do call up and play players who are perhaps not 100% fit. no conspiracy just that the laddie is not match fit and he needs to be nursed back to full fitness gradually stepping it up until he is fit enough to play for the 1st team. Fletch and Donaldson havent done that badly though and I dont think we should be too worried as we've scored more goals than anybody outside of the of.
defence looks a bit creaky though and why is kerr still getting a game. did hee-haw again sunday. needs to up his work rate and stop giving the ball away.

Like #1 I have my suspicions on their relationship. Let`s not forget Collins dropped Benji completely after the Inverness game and before then had been using him for 45 mins only. Incredibly Collins stated the Benji was off form and he couldn`t understand why ??????????? I`ve said before in this media that, played consistently, I believe Benji is worth 15 to 20 goals a season. The fella was as sharp as a tack at the start of this season and frankly I think the manager drained the confidence right out of the man. Not fact, simply my opinion.

fair point. cant totally disagree with you,
like I say though fletch and donaldson scoring plenty goals so I dont think its a problem worth worrying about.

Pedantic_Hibee,

Weren't most Moroccans observing Ramadan at the time along with the teams they were playing ? i.e they were all at the same level of fitness there or thereabouts ?

I could be wrong of course.

Murphy is a good player - but the "best wing back in Scotland"? Must have spent Sunday night with the vision of the back of Driver's shirt burned into his retinas. Not always his fault - but he seemed to be chasing him an awful lot.

21

Hibern IAN,

West stand 08/11/2007 19:32:29

#24 One Scoop or two?

There is a bit of exaggeration surropunding this Driver - v - Murphy debate. I repeat what I wrote earlier that Driver had a very good game but he is still a bit inconsistent so far but has the makings of a very good player. A bit like Sproule, he is a player who looks good beating players but the end product is not always there.

Since I see him in about 30 games a season, I know that Murphy has been, over the last two seasons, outstanding. He has superb ball control, can see a pass, usually retains possession and strikes an excellent dead ball. He can also defend well but, compared to some jet propelled wingers he can lack pace at times. Good full backs make up for that with their positional sense and he normally has that.

Can you name me a better left back in Scotland?

22

Scoop in the City,

08/11/2007 19:56:56

#25 Ian - Like I say, I agree Murphy is good player. I think that Hutton is better but your point about proven consistency is valid. All players in Scotland have weaknesses (otherwise they would not be playing here). I did think that Driver had the better of Murphy for most of the game - and for a winger who normal plays on the left, thought that he had had more joy against Murphy than many other FB's that I have seen him up against this season.

Re your Sproule / Driver comparison. Pace is similar but I think that Driver is far better at getting crosses over having beaten the man, than Sproule ever was.

#23 Muslims cannot eat or drink from sunrise to sunset--distracting if playing a match I'd say. I couldn't do it--does take enormous discipline. I can barely make it through giving anything up for Lent.
