HIBS skipper Rob Jones consulted a specialist yesterday in a bid to resolve his groin injury but boss John Collins insisted he's optimistic the defender will be fit to face Inverness this weekend.
The 27-year-old was forced to miss Sunday's defeat to Aberdeen after pulling up in training the day before the game with a tightness in his lower back and pelvis.

The player travelled to Pittodrie with the rest of the squad only to fail a late fitness test but Collins is hopeful that he will manage to shake the injury off in time for the clash with Craig Brewster's side.

But, while Collins admits that Hibs missed Jones' presence in both defence and attack against the Dons, he stressed that his captain will only be thrown straight back into the action at the Caledonian Stadium if he is 100 per cent fit.

"We're hopeful that Rob will be fit but we will have to wait until tomorrow to get a better idea," said Collins.

"I think we're optimistic about his chances because it doesn't look like there's anything serious, there are no tears.

"He saw a specialist yesterday and hopefully they will come back to us with good news, it was more of a precaution then anything else but you never want to take any chances.

"It's important not to rush Rob and we won't be taking any risks because that would be stupid. If he's not ready to play he simply won't play."

Kevin McCann plugged the gap at the back in his absence on Sunday, lining up alongside stand-in skipper Chris Hogg, and, with Jones facing a race against time to prove his fitness for the trip to face Caley, Collins may be forced to shuffle his pack once again.

The Hibs boss has recognised centre-halves Torben Joneleit and Darren McCormack available after they came through yesterday's reserve match against Dundee United unscathed.

The pair have not featured for the first team since September but Collins today urged them to be patient and insisted that their chance will come.

"Torben wasn't really in the squad at the weekend, it was just a very late call-up," he said. "He had trained in a hard session with the reserve boys and, by the time Rob pulled up, Torben had completed that so we went with Kevin McCann. But Torben and Darren are still in my mind and I'm sure their chances will come."

Collins was delighted with the contribution of both players in yesterday's reserve match at Almondvale as Hibs defeated Dundee United 5-1. The Easter Road side opened the scoring through Clayton Donaldson after the former York City striker was teed up by an inch-perfect pass from Damon Gray, although United levelled two minutes later.

Hibs restored their advantage when Donaldson was brought down in the box and Dean Shiels converted the penalty. They were on easy street when Filipe Morais hit a double, the first a stunning 25-yard free-kick, and Gray rounded off the scoring when he rounded the keeper and slotted home after ignoring shouts from the United defence for offside.

Collins added: "It was a great result and performance. That's what we're looking for from the boys, they stuck to their task and played some good football.

"It was a strong side, we had Felipe, Dean, Clayton, Torben and Patrick Noubissie involved and it was a great workout for them."

One coat,

I hope Jones makes the ICT game because Sunday's performance at Aberdeen was an embarrassment which lacked leadership and commitment. If Jones can't play either Joneleit or McCormack have to be drafted in. JC got the team selection and tactics wrong!!
No one on Sunday made any telling tackles with Hogg's contribution being to give away free kicks outside the box and he was lucky his foul on Foster did not result in a penalty kick just before half time.
We all want to watch good passing football however our defence, and that starts at the midfield, need to stop giving away possession cheaply and show a bit more bite in the tackle.

Good work from the reserves and nice to see morais hit a double. Hopefully he will bang in a few for 1st team he seems up for having a crack at goal which is welcome from an otherwise lacklustre midfield (zemmama not inc.).

Maybe a small explanation with regards to why McCormack and Joniliet were not playing instead of McCann but makes sense.

Had a look on net for Steven Cohen who The Sun reckons is our target for January, 9 goals so far this season for Racing Ferrol, nothing much else on him tho would have thought there would be the way he was described in tabloid.

Time to sack the Hibs board,

West Lothian 05/12/2007 12:56:55

Is that our 'tactical genuis' of a manager getting his excuses in considering his nonsensical playing of Kevin MacCann at centre half in the game against Aberdeen! The very player whose total incapacity as a central defender in the air against Dundee Utd cost us the two goals! What arrant nonsense is Collins talking now when he is now saying that "Torben wasn't really in the squad at the weekend." Where was he then John in outer space? To us ordinary mortals he was sitting on the bench on Sunday and if he wasn't fit to play what the hell was he doing on the bench? And where was Darren MacCormack on Sunday? Nice to see they are now in your mind John, after the event? Incidentally if you want to read a surperb analysis of Collins utter incapacity to be the manager of Hibs football club go to the contribution of 'Livi Hibee' 36 - 43 under yesterdays Evening News article 'Collins wants aggressive streak' If anyone can adequately demolish the surperb arguments their, please do it! And to think I thought the worst immediate problem that Hibs faced was the penury and short sightedness of the board led by that 'financial wizard' Rod Petrie (i.e. no one knows where the money goes certainly not to adequately replace the players lost! )Mind you our 'magnificent board' when showed their usual level of competence when they appointed Collins instead of Mark McGhee! O yes and in the 'virtual world' of Mr Collins Brian Kerr is an adequate replacement for Scott Brown o and yes Wedny Alexander is not guilty of committing any criminal offence and is a fit leader of the Scottish Labour Party'

Jones has a lot more days when he wins everything than days when he misses everything.

He's obviously been doing a good job as captain as well, because without him on the pitch we looked like a ship without a rudder.

I certainly found the the contribution of 'Livi Hibee' 36 - 43 under yesterdays Evening News article 'Collins wants aggressive streak' very interesting and well-written. I think, however, that if most football managers were subjected to a proper psychological analysis then very few would appear particularly normal. If there is any job that would turn you insane it would be football management!

All Laugh Son,

How can this be? I thought Hibs had an unlimited amount of talented youngsters just ready to step into the breach whenever called upon?

Surely something else was to blame - ref, SPL, Sentanta, Hearts, Vlad etc etc.

Or could it just be that the ride is coming to an end?

Saturday Sammy,

Port O`Leith 05/12/2007 13:38:55

Is it at all reasonable to hope that a degree of investment `on the park` is made in January? You have to think that the Manager has made a wish list and that the board are committed to honour the request if possible. So, I ask myself, will we actually go and aquire footballers we need that are BETTER than those they theoretically displace. Talk is cheap but ........... we need a more competitive midfield ...... Ian Black (ICT, available, wants away). We need a strong, ring crafty, target man ...... Colin Nish, (Killie, avail, six months buy out) and if these or others cost money then we must find the fund to do so instead of panning the river for a rare piece of gold and not the silt we have to deal with. I admit that it`s easy to make such an arguement not knowing the workings and finances of the club but football is about the team and the fans and both are looking tired these days.

Hibernia,

05/12/2007 13:47:20

Jones may have been missed a little on Sunday but I think the real fact is that he has been by the early standards he set last season, very poor since the turn of the year.

He IMO is not the inspirational leader everyone seems to think he is. More often than not its Hogg or Murphy shouting at the back as big Rob wanders off to the touchline to attempt to tackle someone.

Stories have been going around for months that he wants away and if I recall correctly Ipswish and Leeds have been linked with bids for him. Id take a decent offer for him and then let Joneliet and McCormack compete for the position for the rest of the season.

What we do need is a solid midfielder in the mold of Mathias Jack, break up play, digs in when needed etc. The way JC picks the team Stevenson and Kerr are automatic choices and I dont see how he could drop Boozy. So how anyone else will get a chance to stake a claim to get into the team goodness only knows.

Some of you guys (#4 for example) who think you know more about the game and tactics and player weaknesses and strengths than J.C./T.C. really need to have a lie down in a dark room for a while!! Where exactly did you study your coaching badges?
J.C. and T.C. may not get it all right all the time (None of us do) but my money says that they'll get it right more often than some of the critics on here.
Even Livi Hibby yesterday ! well, he talked a good game from the sidelines but standing on the sidelines as we do, we really know about as much as we could write on a gnat's cock with a distemper brush.
Get real FFS.

17

JAL to Easter Road,

05/12/2007 16:51:34

#17 one more thing to add to that--I see a lot of theorizing and speculating but our information is all here say. We're not on the pitch or in the clubhouse or in the agent's pants, we just don't know. It's all third hand information so how much are we missing?

18

by no means a great team but where are we in the league again?and how many games have we lost?when you consider the standard of the players who have left over the last 3 years it's a miracle.

20

Livi Hibee,

05/12/2007 19:46:38

Hibby, please don’t make the mistake of denigrating your capabilities; I know it is easy to think these guys have certificates and have played professional football, but there is no need to be in awe of them, the beauty of football is that every fan, coach, manager or schoolboy should be able to discuss tactics and the skill of individual players and to offer critical comments. Saying that you know nothing is an insult to yourself; perhaps you suffer from low self esteem. Think how futile democracy would be if everyone went around saying “we know nothing – leave it to the politicians- they have studied politics and know a lot more than us- it is better to trust them”

21

Hibby,

Lochaber 05/12/2007 20:21:22

Spot on #20. And that is exactly my point.
Livi Hibee, if I suffer from anything it's certainly not low self esteem. I do however think I have enough savvy to make an intelligent assessment of the average fan's knowledge of the game as compared to that of the average professional's, and that's the issue here!! By all means have an opinion about the game but to purport to know more or better than the pro's!! well, I simply can't swallow that and I'll always back the judgement of J.C., T.C. & R.P.against that of the average contributor to these threads.
Politics is more about beliefs than simply knowledge so obviously, if anyones beliefs are well thought through then they merit as much consideration as any politician. Especially if that politician is a fat gunt with a speech impediment!!! If you know what I mean.

22

Livi Hibee,

05/12/2007 20:23:52

Time to sack the board…. I thought that you, of all people, would have long ago realised how the incestuous relationship between professional football and journalism works:

1. Journalist needs a story by 12 noon about a team; as usual, hasn’t got a clue where to start
2. Journalist frantically scans postings on the relevant club’s fans’ forums, or on newspaper blogs
3. Eureka! Apparently, the team manger (who, lets not forget, Hibby, has lots of coaching certificates) has played a midget at centre half against an experienced 6 ft + striker; team gets turned over and fans are furious, especially when they realise the manager has two reasonably competent 6 ft + alternatives to choose from, one of them actually being on the bench (only in theory, apparently!)
4. needless to say, fans need to be placated; “journalist” approaches team manager and discusses situation
5. a win-win situation quickly presents itself; manager will select players for interview by “journalist” and prime them what to say and also give some useful suggestions to the “journalist” about what type of questions he/she might want to ask
6. Bingo! “Journalist” has an excellent page filler and fans are placated, since it becomes apparent why aforementioned midget was the only option available to manager (remember, Hibby, the guy with all the certificates)
7. “Journalist” picks up article fee and heads of to the local hostelry for an evening’s refreshment or to the off licence for 6 cans of Tennants
8. Manager carries on regardless, safe in the knowledge that, with all his coaching certificates and useful newspaper contacts, no one will have the knowledge or audacity to question him
9. Manager heads home to work on his 6 pack

JAL to Easter Road,

#31 Right--he's made some mistakes. So Livi Hibee's anti-JC manifesto aside, let's take a look at 2007--is this essentially JC's rookie year as a manager of a professional league club, correct me if I'm wrong.

And as a rookie of a professional league club, he's got us a piece of silverware and brought us to third in the league. Yes, there are mistakes. Yes, he appears to have a hot temper and has made some inappropriate gaffs in public. Yes, he's got a six pack that we all know about.

But can we compare this really not so bad at all performance for a first year manager to other first years of other managers? I think JC will mature and wizen up over time, like a good wine.
He's only 39 and everyone knows 39 is the new 29, which is the new 19, so basically he's like a teenager!

He's not perfect as the Aberdeen debacle showed. Or the report of the yelling at the supporter (third-hand everyone, and yes I read the "first hand" account from the supporter who was blasted but I read it on the Internet).

It's hardly time to condemn him though. Let's see what happens. When we slip to 7th in the league and JC starts faxing instructions (sorry jams, taking a pot shot and you've been so good on our threads lately, it's been noticed, and thank you) then let's start up the mob cry with torches in our hands.

31

Barry R,

06/12/2007 10:17:27

I can't believe the abuse Collins is getting for playing McCann centre half. Sure, he is not the biggest, but I thought on sunday he won his fair share of headers and was probably one of our better performers. A couple of the tackles he made when Miller came short and tried to run at him were great. McCann certainly didn't cost any of the goals. Even Rob would have been helpless to stop the first because Miller was able to run forward on to the ball. Maybe Johnny Leith or Darren Mac would have been better, but that's easy to say now.

Also, Livi Hibee, I cannot see for one moment that playing left back is so different to playing left midfield. I take it you were up in arms at the league cup final when Collins played Stevenson, a left back, in left midfield?! I'd say that just about any good wide midfielder or full back could play in either position with ease. Look at Stevenson, Murphy, and Glass before him. Even McCann has done the same on the right as has Gatheussi.

Time to sack the Hibs board,

06/12/2007 12:21:29

33 I don't know what game you were watching! Even Collins complained that Miller won every header all the game and this was a crucial factor in Aberdeen winning the game. On the MacCann substitution I think you must be in a minority of one!It would seem pretty obvious I would have thought that to play a 5' 8" right back at centre half up against a 6 foot 3 centre forward is not the smartest move, especially when we have two actual centre half's who have played in the first team and for some mysterious reason are not picked! I don't even agree with what you say on the first goal, McCann was the player trying to block Miller, he certainly had no chance with his lack of positional sense and his lack of height, at the very least McCormack or Joneleit would have made a better fist of it!
I would accept vis a vis the comments of 32 that perhaps with the majority of fans at this time the jury is out on Collins, though doubts and misgivings are growing.
The essential fact of the matter is that we have hardly played well for a whole game this season, in our last six league games have scraped a 1-0 win against Gretna where we were hanging on at the end and the performance against Aberdeen was as a few Hibs fans have mentioned one of the worst seen in decades!
The proof of the cake is in the eating of course but I fear the diagnosis of 'Livi Hibee' concerning Jc is fundamentally correct, which only heaps more disasters on the original one! I have always thought that the main problem concerning Hibs was the no serious ambition Old Firm feeder club Board! When Collins was first appointed I supported it, thinking Tommy Craig would give him the necessary experience! Though I did not realise at that time that Mark McGee was also interviewed! The 'only' thing we need now in my opinion is for someone to come in with some ambition for the club take over and appoint a manger with serious managerial experience. Alas it is always a desperate gamble to bring in a ne
