Yang – whose name is the Chinese for ‘sunshine’ – and his mate Tian Tian – meaning ‘sweetie’ - came to the zoo in 2011 from China. To celebrate his birthday, Yang’s keepers are treating him to an extra big bundle of bamboo – his favourite food – and this is not the first time Edinburgh’s keepers have pampered the panda. As part of a bid to encourage Yang to exercise more in 2015, the team introduced a large football into the panda’s enclosure. Yang has since become something of a footie maestro and can often be spotted enjoying a kick about before refuelling with a large meal of bamboo. They have quickly become one of the zoo’s star attractions, even being visited by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
